Covid-19 Picks Up the Pace

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 273 new cases of the Wuhan Virus this morning.  The total number of cases is 3,360.  The virus has caused 122 deaths.  The pace slowed over the last few days but picked up a full  head of steam yesterday.  It remains to be seen whether the increase is due to increased testing or more actual infections.

You all took your masks off too early. Y'all were doing so good too. Stop listening to the naysayers who just want to watch the world burn.

One of the UMMC testing pieces was intentionally taken off line Monday, so Tuesdays numbers looked artificially low and today's artificially high.

Still watching the chart showing date of symptom onset. The peak was March 23, but it hasn't gone down a whole lot since. Pretty steady 120 new cases per day with a drop off around April 1 simply due to the lag in getting results back.

What is concerning is how fast the number hospitalized is still going up. Hopefully we are close to our peak, but it doesn't look like we are there yet. Number of cases should drop first followed by number of hospitalizations and finally number of deaths. Reeves extending the shelter in place order through April 30 looks very likely in order to effectively evaluate if locking things down on April 3 had much effect.

A real shame they can't make stupid and underlying condition.

Morning Reading:
(Reuters) - The United States may need to endure social distancing measures adopted during the coronavirus outbreak until 2022, according to researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The study comes as more than 2,200 people died in the United States from the outbreak on Tuesday, a record, according to a Reuters tally, even as the country debated how to reopen its economy. The overall death toll in the U.S. from the virus stands at more than 28,300 as of Tuesday.

"Intermittent distancing may be required into 2022 unless critical care capacity is increased substantially or a treatment or vaccine becomes available", the Harvard researchers said in findings published Tuesday in the journal Science.

Giving examples of South Korea and Singapore, the researchers wrote that effective distancing could reduce the strain on healthcare systems and enable contact tracing and quarantine to be feasible.

The study acknowledged that prolonged distancing would most likely have profoundly negative economic, social, and educational consequences.

The study added that even in the case of "apparent elimination", SARS-CoV-2 surveillance should still be maintained, as a resurgence in contagion may be possible as late as 2024.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that infections had "certainly" not yet peaked. Nearly 2 million people globally have been infected and more than 124,000 have died in the most serious pandemic in a century.

The epicenter has shifted from China, where the virus emerged in December, to the United States, which has now recorded the most deaths.

KF, I love this graph but can’t find where MSDH posts it—got a link? Or are you making it yourself with their data?

@10:22 the same can be said of you. You don't mind how many people suffer hunger, or suicide, or depression? You mind little of their financial well being. You care nothing if they have to postpone surgeries, nor do you care if they have a job to go to, just as long as your safe from a virus that was grossly overestimated.

You say others watch the world burn. Some would say you help torched that world.

LA? We have double the rate per 100K of AL and TN, our neighbors.

You think Covid cares that Gov. Edwards is a conservative Democrat? Or that Tater is a ginger?

You do know Edwards is a veteran? Law enforcement veteran? West Pointer? Paratrooper? Right?

He's done a pretty damn good job too. And Reeves has impressed me a great deal. And I wasn't a fan, before, by far. He's doing a good job. I misjudged Tater.

@11:09
Money is just linen and ink. They can, and are, just printing more of it. Stop worshipping money. Humans grow the food and make civilization happen. Money is just a tool for control.

I can’t even imagine a second wave of this crap.

Does this mean that Corona Beer is cheap now?

11:09 Agree totally...we have some folks who cannot see the big picture and long term ramifications of the actions being put into place. Unfortunately, we will all pay the price for those who cannot think past today.

@10:51 if stupid was an underlying condition, you may be surprised as to whom this would impact. The world and the economy is not a light switch you just turn off and back on. If we renamed "automobiles" as a new virus and allowed the news media to show pictures of terrible car accidents where perfectly healthy 30 year old moms and their healthy children were dying, we would have a segment that would want to eliminate cars or reduce the speed limit to 5mph on all roads. Just like CV-19, the vast majority of folks are fine after a car accident but some do die.

and no one could have predicted that a virus would spread during mardi gras- where visitors from all over the world frolic...including those from now corona ravaged european countries.

Medicare pays $13,000 for someone admitted with COVID 19. They pay $39,000 for anyone put on a ventilator no matter the length of time. One day, one week, one month. For plain old pneumonia (no COVID diagnosis) Medicare pays only $4,600. Stands to reason that is why NYC was yelling for more and more ventilators.

The CDC sent out instructions to doctors with new ICD-10 codes for COVID-19 and said if 'suspected' (even without testing), they can classify as COVID-19.

Research. It's about money. We have not been given accurate or adequate numbers to even determine the rate of death.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a major contributor to the WHO.

If the numbers are to be believed then Dobbs should be fired.

The "distance until 2022" (or even 2021) proposals are irrelevant and should be disregarded completely. Because they can't happen.

Here's the hard reality: We may have to accept half a million deaths to avoid destroying the lives of most Americans. That's about a 22% increase over the average 2.8 million deaths that happen every year regardless. It's awful, but it's reality.

Look at the comments on any large social media thread about new restrictions: they are 10 to 1 in favor of taking our chances. People just aren't going to tolerate economic suicide to avoid a 0.25% chance of dying.

I personally can't stand Trump, but if he's the candidate of not committing economic suicide, not only will I vote for him, I'll donate to him.

A second wave of the Trump flu might just be enough to destabilize the entire country to a point of no return.

People
We don't know what the " is" IS yet.
We haven't tested ENOUGH people yet.
We don't know how long immunity lasts in those who have recovered or if there's a level of antibodies needed to insure immunity.
We don't know if there's " Typhoid Mary" element.
We know it's evolving and picking up RNA but not what that portends.
The DANGER is THIS virus is that it is NOVEL...meaning "NEW,NEVER seen one like this one".
The tragedy is that the way we survive this and thrive is to work together and help each other. Sadly, that's not who we are anymore. That's the way society's survive crisis...not the " so what?, It's all about me" attitude that is too prevalent.
We don't need to know everything to start making "recovery" decisions, but we need to know a helluva lot more than we know today. And, we need leaders with enough sense to prioritize and with the humility to know what they don't know and the smarts to ask the right questions of those who do know!
Stop, by God, politicizing this. There have been enough idiotic missteps on both sides of the aisle that are literally responsible for deaths. That you blindly follow some political hack you've never met but that you've designated as your intellectual guide, forgetting that they are humans and all humans are fallible, is killing us!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Sonjay Poontang and his band headline the night with a special steel cage, no time limit "loser must leave town" bout between Alan Lange and "Big Cat"Donna Ladd following afterwards. Kamikaze will perform his new song F*** Bush, he's still a _____. Did I mention there was no referee? Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices. Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell.
