Former Coldwater Town Clerk Arrested for Embezzlement

State Auditor Shad White issued the following statement.

State Auditor Shad White announced today that George Nangah, former Town Clerk of Coldwater, was arrested by local law enforcement in Tunica County after a joint investigation between the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor and federal agencies. Nangah faces a federal indictment of multiple counts of wire fraud. He was also issued a demand for $302,973.19 from the Auditor’s office.

Mr. Nangah was born “Ekese Awah Nangah” and has used multiple aliases. He was Town Clerk in Coldwater from April 2014 until July 2017. During this time, he made over $116,000 in unapproved purchases for items such as a GoPro camera and gift cards for airline tickets and hotels. Many of these purchases were made by town debit cards or invoice accounts at local Lowe’s Home Improvement and Best Buy stores. Nangah also issued over $46,000 in unapproved payments directly to himself and over $53,000 to another individual in a kickback scheme.

The Mississippi Office of the State Auditor will deliver the case to the District Attorney for the Mississippi 17th District, John Champion, to secure an indictment for embezzlement.

State Auditor Shad White said, "We will crack down on any embezzlement at any level of government. But embezzlement is even more troubling when it involves a large amount of cash and is perpetrated by someone with potential violations of federal and state law hanging over their head. I'm glad we were able to partner with federal authorities to make sure Nangah was apprehended and brought to justice. I look forward to working with either state or federal prosecutors to make sure Nangah is held accountable."

The FBI issued the following statement.

George Nangah, 51, of Cordova, Tennessee was arrested following a 14-count indictment by a federal grand jury alleging wire fraud, announced United States Attorney for the Northern District of Mississippi William C. Lamar, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Mississippi Christopher Freeze and Mississippi State Auditor Shad White.

According to the indictment, Nangah allegedly committed wire fraud by unauthorized use of a debit card attached to the Town of Coldwater’s general fund banking account at home improvement stores in Southaven and Bartlett, Tennessee for items not used by the Town of Coldwater. Nangah also allegedly used a charge account set up in the town’s name at an electronics store where he would purchase items and gift cards not used or meant for use by the town. He also allegedly provided unauthorized payments to himself on the town’s clearing and general fund bank account. Nangah also allegedly made unauthorized payments to a third party who would then pay a kickback amount to Nangah.

In all, from April 2014 to July 2017, it is alleged that Nangah received approximately $116,005.41 in cash and property as a result of the scheme.

Nangah made his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Roy Percy in the Northern District of Mississippi in Oxford on Tuesday. Magistrate Judge Percy ordered Nangah to be held pending a detention hearing set for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2018.

If convicted, Nangah faces up to 20 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

The case was investigated by the FBI Jackson Division’s Southaven Resident Agency and the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office. The FBI Memphis Division and Tunica County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Parker Kline.

These charges are merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Good Job KF!! Coldwater should be debarred for receiving future federal money for 2-3 years.

1:19, is there a problem?

More seriously, I'm wondering what Pickering was doing all that time?

Anonymous said...

That is a great question Burke. Can't help but note the increased pace of actions coming out of the Auditor's office.

It amazes me how small town boards hand someone a check book and walk away.

Eat shit 3:24. Blanket statements like that are pure toothless, backwoods, goat F*****g, hillbilly ignorance. There are towns in MS west of i55 that are not "lost".

Stacey Pickering left very abruptly.....something doesn't pass the smell test.

But he is from a real nice family!!!!

Might want to look at the old corrupt beat system of Tate County. They've got some of the highest taxes in the state, one of the top ten median incomes, and the county is still crumbling.

Did he live in Coldwater or Cordova, TN? Im suspecting Cordova, TN because, if you've ever driven through Coldwater, you would easily be able to spot someone with over $50k.

Totally agree about Tate County....corrupt to the bone, and long overdue for a colonoscopy. You could round up the congregation of First Baptist Church of Senatobia alone and take down dozens of government fraudsters.

You people talking about Tate County are ignorant obviously. Anyone knowledgeable about the matter understands what is going on. There are three different county schools: the white folks in Strayhorn want to keep it that way. Whether it's right or wrong you decide but something tells me you wouldn't want to send your kids to East Tate either.... Turns out having three school systems, three administrations, etc is expensive. There has been talk of passing a law to force consolidation. The locals howled not to allow it and then they howl about their high taxes. It is an exhausting situation with no good solution.

@4:40pm Uh, apparently the people talking about Tate County DO know what they're talking about because as you so aptly described, there is incompetence and malfeasance due to personal agendas wrongly interfering in the administration of good government oversight, and the efficient stewardship of taxpayer dollars. So of course there IS a good solution, just not the political will for it to happen due to the corrupt folks in place at present, again, as you so aptly pointed out.

Anonymous said...

@5:32 so taxpaying citizens are corrupt because they don’t want schools consolidated? You watch too much law and order

Tate County is a cesspool of nepotism and malfeasance. The churches support those who are behind it all. If you lived there, you'd know. Law and Order doesn't even come close to the corruption in the quiet corners of Mississippi.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
