Former JPD Commander James McGowan posted this message on Facebook Thursday:
Last week I advised the City Of Jackson that I am officially retiring from the Jackson Police Department effective this Saturday, after over 27 years of service to the City of Jackson Police Department. This has been a lifelong goal (wanting to be a Police OffIcer) and hoping to make it to retirement. I pray for all of the Officers and staff at JPD that are doing a very difficult job under very difficult circumstances.
Always remember we do this job to keep the Citizens of Jackson and each other safe from the people who want to do us harm. I will still be around working so this is not a goodbye. If you had my number, that’s my personal number so keep it if you need me.
God Bless all Police, Fire, EMS and the Dispatchers that do this job daily. Watch out for each other and be safe. Thank you to all of my family and friends for supporting me through the years.
Mr. McGowan was Precinct 4 Commander for several years. Crime improved substantially under his watch. He knew his turf, knew who the bad guys were, and always knew what the hell was going on in his precinct. He gave his cell phone out to citizens so they could reach him immediately and not worry about waiting on dispatch to get things right. Chief Vance promoted him to District Commander (Precincts 3 & 4). When he became Chief, Anthony Moore demoted him to Sergeant and stuck him in the Youth Crimes Division. It was Chief Moore's way of shuffling him off to a dead-end job. The message was clear.

Just saw the double homicide story at Van Mark apts in Ridgeland...lived there in the early 2000’s. It was a nice place...shits getting real
...." Anthony Moore demoted him to Sergeant and stuck him in the Youth Crimes Division"........
Must be more to the story. Doesn't JPD have a union?
A real shame. He actually cared, tried to do the right thing, and went far above and beyond what was required. But I guess his skin was the wrong color for success. Free the land, right?
@HUH? JPD’s Union is a skeleton union. Most of the officers do not belong to it. His tested rank was that of a Sergeant. Every rank abouve lieutenant is appointed and you serve at the pleasure of the Chief.
Thank you, sir, for your service. This was a man who would actually return phone calls. Can you imagine?
12:12 - I notice you said 'double homicide'. The Kingfish called it a 'double murder'.
So...Is this policeman who is retiring...white? I mean...Honkie.
8:39 - every murder is a homicide, but not every homicide is a murder...
Anthony Moore is a racist. He probably won't ever see this but he will go down as the worst ever... Anthony Moore what a joke!
Not every homicide is murder, true. But, upwards of 93% of them connected to a weapon of any sort, In Jackson, are.
But, crime is everywhere so we have nothing about which to be concerned. Settle down people. It's simple 'the times' and a natural evolution process.
This man was a true blessing to the Fondren area. Now he's gone and see what happened last night, as noted above in the post about the 3 people killed -- drag racing with Fred's parking lot as the staging area and it took forever to get any response.
I was told that the final straw in Chief Vance's departure was his refusal to demote a qualified officer at the order of the Mayor.
