Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith tried to put accused killer Nicholas Coats back behind bars yesterday. Coats was arrested in October for allegedly killing Chelsie Kirschten. A judge's order denying him bond also ordered him to be released if he was not indicted within 90 days.
Kirschten was a 24-year old waitress at Twin Peaks who was murdered late at night on Fortification Street on August 17, 2017. The killer walked up to the window of her vehicle and shot into the car as it was stopped at the intersection of Fortification Street and North State Street. The bullet struck her in the back, killing her a few minutes later. Police arrested Nicholas Coats and Lidarius Dixon and charged them with murder in October. Coats was also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle. County Court Judge Bill Skinner denied bond for Coats and bound him over to the grand jury. However, he also ordered that he be released after January 2, 2018 if he was not indicted. He was released on January 10 since he was not indicted. Dixon was denied bond.

McNamara pointed the finger at JPD as the reason for a lack of indictment:
5. A Hinds County Grand Jury met on January 8-10, 2018. At no time prior to, nor during this meeting, did the District Attorney's Office have in its possession a Grand Jury Case File for the above referenced defendant.
6. To be clear, the District Attorney's Office only received Mr. Coats file, along with his co-defendant's files, on January 22, 2018 (Exhibit B).
7. On January 10, 2018, the last day for Grand Jury presentment, this defendant was released from the Hinds County Detention Center at 5:59 pm, without any notice to the County Court or the District Attorney's Office.
8. The State asks this Court to review this cause, taking in to consideration the fact that lead detective, Corey Jenkins had not completed his investigation by the time the Grand Jury was empaneled. Moreover, the State asks this Court to consider the fact that the District Attorney's Office did not have in its possession the case files necessary for presentment of this matter until January 22, 2018.
However, former JPD Chief Lee Vance said there was no lead detective and that any one of the several investigators that worked the case could have presented it to the grand jury.

Rumor is the author of this motion is running for circuit court judge. I would like all of you to watch this train wreck in court before you cast your ballot, please?
Reading between the lines, sounds to me like Lee Vance supports the release.
It'd sort of be refreshing to have a choice in these elections. For example -
Robert-I'm batshit-crazy-Smith versus Idiot Stanley Alexander ain't no choice.
Stanley Alexander is Bennie Thompsons puppet. Smith is the lesser of the 2 evils clearly.
And Smith is the criminals’ puppet.
The issue the DA keeps ignoring is this: if there was a deadline to indict, why didn’t the DA’s Office request an extension if it couldn’t present the case to the grand jury in time? I’m afraid the answer is that they ignored the deadline.
Pat McNamara running for judge? Ha there’s no way. He left the AG’s Office after they ran out of divisions to dump him. Arrived at the DA’s Office and was quickley relegated to Grand Jury duty.
Like RSS ignores everything because he's either crazy or a drug addict or both. If RSS cared anything about the law-abiding citizens of Hinds County he would resign.
@ 9:37,
Your obviously not familiar with Bennie or you just are a supporter of his. Im not advocating that Smith is good by any stretch… in fact he's awful. However, that would still be better than A Bennie boy in office. Im betting your not a Bennie supporter after all I can't imagine too many of them actually reading online or reading at all for that matter. Sad but true!
Since the Mayor gives hugs to the DA in open court, don't expect JPD to defend itself when the DA points the finger across the street.
Citizen Vance’s statement that there was no lead investigator doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in the leadership at JPD. So, JPD didn’t assign a lead investigator to a high profile murder case? Every felony that is reported is assigned a lead investigator even if the criminal is arrested on the scene.
So the real question here should be, why was no lead investigator assigned to this case?
This is so scary. Banana republic. Jackson is lost
Vance's continued insistence that he failed to designate a lead investigator clearly supports the release of the accused. Is that not odd to you careful observers? Has the real Lee Vance come out of the bushes?
Talked to a former ADA who still works in Hinds County. He said lead detectives are assigned to cases all the time.
Nice try, Vance.
Also, we've already heard that the case file wasn't given to RSS. He claimed that on the teevee earlier this month.
*last month.
Failure to indict, failure to proofread.
