Tragic morning in Eastover.

JPD responded to a suicide on Eastover Drive this morning.

A vehicle was found with a white male inside who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  He was not a resident of Eastover.

What a beautiful place to leave this earth, surrounded by big trees and lakes. I hope he found the peace he was searching.

What was the connection to Eastover? Had he grown up in that neighborhood? An ex-lover that lived in that neighborhood?

Saturday, a college student in Starkville took his life. Last night, it was a student at Ole Miss. I hope this wasn’t another young person struggling with drug issues & depression. I wish it wasn’t any age, but suicide among young adults is at an all-time high and it’s not due to opioids. College age kids did not start using drugs from trying pain medication. Xanax, cocaine & alcohol mixture is their drugs of choice. When is the fight against losing our youth going to start? I guess Randy Easterling can’t cash in on these addictions. While this “epidemic” is pushed down our throats, these suicides due to drug addictions are being ignored.

In many cultures suicide is an honorable way to exit this life. In the US and other Western cultures suicide brings such a stigma and is considered shameful but why should it be? If someone has struggled with mental, emotional or drug issues, why can't they be allowed to bow out of life and all of the stress it involves? In many ways it can be a selfless act of sparing your loved ones additional pain that you are bringing upon them.

Is that an opioid salesman above? You have no idea what you're talking about, and it's not on topic here.

But, many college age children use opioids recreationally after being introduced through an injury, or stealing them from their elderly relatives, etc. If you think there aren't a ton of oxys, vicodin, fentanyl, etc., flowing to college campuses, you should ask someone from the student health center at any of the bigger schools.

12:55 is daft. Suicide is the most selfish act you can commit.

Suicide is Painless

Anonymous said...

The so called opiod epidemic as well as the recent rash of suicides in and around Jackson all seem to be more about the scarcity of good mental health practitioners that are accessible and affordable in our area.

Suicide is painless, but being raped by the Devil for all of eternity is not.

I made a statement about the recent number of suicides, so it is on topic here. If you've kept up with this site's coverage of the opioid issue, you'd know the basis for my comment. Not a salesman, but smart enough to know that's not what led all of these kids to suicide. Of course, there are pills available on campuses everywhere, but I know the majority of kids personally who have taken their lives recently and I know the so called opioid epidemic was not to blame. Kids get booze from their parents liquor cabinet and become alcoholics, so does that mean we should outlaw it from those who drink responsibly? You must be a fan of Mr E's.

Glad you have all the answers, 2:06. Chapter and verse, please?

Anonymous said...

The biggest problem with opioid use is trying to find a clinic or doctor to help get an adult child off the drugs when they do not have health insurance.

2:06,

How do you know suicide is painless ?

Are you going to try it and write about it on this blog ?

Let me know how that works for you !!!!!!

Of the two suicides I've been "close" to recently, neither involved drugs. In fact, it appears that both were due to them being unable to "deal" with things going on in their lives. I know this is gonna bring out the flamers, the ones who can't bear to think THEIR actions could be responsible for anything in their kids' lives, but young people are coddled so much these days, when things get tough, the kids have no idea how to deal with it! When momma and daddy have done, literally, EVERYTHING for the child, defended their EVERY action, etc., they don't know how to cope with adversity, and they do the only thing totally within THEIR control......

So there's another possibility besides drugs......

3:17 PM, considering that life ends immediately upon blowing one's brains out, I would say that the brain has no time to comprehend pain before it ceases to compute any activity.

It's kind of like knowing that the inside of a closed fridge is dark without having to get in and test it out.

Suicide is a long term solution to a short term problem, most victims of suicide suffer from depression. Usually there are signs such as crying out for help. That is why survivor guilt haunts the family members and friends for the rest of their lives. Certainly there is a connection with drug abuse and addiction since shame and hopelessness are found in both. Societal prognosis is not good when our leaders continue to underfund mental health resources.

Of all the lighthearted comments made, I wouldn't wish suicide on my worst enemy. It is the ultimate waste of the gift of life, one of the most horrific things you can do to yourself and to others.

3:44,

Come on 3:44, I bet you have been inside a fridge just to see if the light really goes off !!!

3:36,

You hit the nail on the head---kids of today do not have a clue what life is really like. I'm 75 and seen it all and have lived life to the fullest. I've been broke several times and worth millions several times. When I was broke, I didn't ask anyone for help and was able to get myself back on my feet. Today, the kids could not handle 10% of what I've been thru. It's a shame---what if they had to go to war !
I say life is like living in a fort--you ride out the gate everyday to fight the Indians and hope you come back to the fort.

As someone whos mother committed suicide, its very selfish, but you never know what someone is going through. Not to comment on the opioid spin machine, but something that should be addressed, is the number of OBGYN's playing mental heath professional and prescribing Lexapro and other antidepressants off the cuff.

How do we know this was even a suicide? Why wouldn’t he pull over or go to a park rather than just stop at an intersection with his foot on the brake?

Social Media is really hurting our young people. It can be hard for adults to deal with, at times. At the ages when children get on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and whatever else, most do not have the maturity to deal with it. Many parents think they are keeping up with them on Social Media, not being aware of all the different accounts they use. Many kids have multiple accounts and only allow parents to follow the “clean” ones. They are posting things on their “Finsta” accounts that can be shocking and extremely horrible about themselves and other people all the time. It’s truly heartbreaking to me to see the rise in anxiety and depression in our young people today and I have to think it’s related to Social Media usage among those that don’t have mental capacity to handle it.

It's tiring to listen to the same goofball who perpetually chirps about the 'lack of mental health funding and facilities'. Nobody who is about to commit suicide seeks the help of a mental health counselor or facility. Calls to suicide hot lines are from those who are not quite serious enough to take the step. The rest, those who are successful, could not care less about whether mental health services are available to them. And if there were a mental health office on every street corner, that would not diminish the incidence of suicide.

Nor can these problems be related to 'dad's liquor cabinet' or social media. I also have been affected and know the drill. You dime-store psychologists have no clue.

Xanax is definitely a scourge on our society. Its marketed as an anti-anxiety drug while it actually causes panic attacks, but we aren't told that so we take more of them thinking they'll stop the panic attacks. Neither are we told that a major "side effect" is suicidal ideation which makes suicide sound like a great and plausible idea. Please keep this in mind if a loved one takes this death drug.

Ive known the father of the victim of the Starkville tragedy since I was a little girl, watched the deceased young man grow up and will be attending the memorial service on Saturday and I can tell you that ALL OF US ARE HEARTBROKEN,REELING AND DEVASTATED.....
SUICIDE IS NOT PAINLESS!!!!

There is ALWAYS A SOLUTION that doesn't involve a permanent irrevocable act to solve a temporary problem no matter how bad it seems.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know who the individual was that was found in Eastover ?

Anonymous said...

What the hell has this got to do with Xanax? Just as there are 50 ways to leave your lover, there are at least that many possible causative factors in the runup to suicide. Why are you people not imagining he/she was jilted by a lover and involving yourselves in the torching of somebody's home who did him/her wrong.

But, by the way....how could they get some us in that MRI tube without Xanax?

@ 10:04
I believe he was an owner of a pawnshop. I was walking my yorkie and walked by as I passed by the gentleman looked around 60 yrs old.

Anonymous said...

11:16 AM, how could you tell the age through all of the blood and guts?

Anonymous said...

Easy... I saw the man on a stretcher as I was 10 feet away. I live 2 houses away from where it took place. Thanks for asking as you were assuming I'm a typical northeast Jackson housewife by your tone.

2:31, you're obviously a sick person.

I just love this blog site. In just a few comments people are arguing if suicide is actually painless. Only thing missing were the usual grammar Nazis that troll about.

To the clueless people who think that the original poster actually believes suicide is painless, this 48 year old song is what he was referencing.

Oh, 10:24, surely you meant to type "educated people who persist in believing that correct grammar and spelling matter," not "grammar Nazis." But name us what you will, we are happy that you noted our absence on this thread. Suicide is a painful topic, a mortal sin, a tragedy, and even the most passionate Syntax Svengali knows better than to brandish unwanted boxes of commas during a discussion like this.

It's a sick person who is walking her yorkie and bothers to saunter over to an obvious scene of much drama and perhaps crime, and takes mental notes, from ten feet away, of who the deceased is and his age and the fact that's he's on a stretcher, so she can report it all on social media later while drinking gin.

Not to mention the fact that she rushed home to call four fellow drinkers and busied herself on Facebook being the first to tell it.

These unfortunate situations, much like train wrecks and airplane crashes, bring out the nuttiest of busy-bodies among us.

Ophelia said...

Plenty of people who are not "sick" walk their Yorkies (note the capital letter, moron @ 9:37; it's short for "Yorkshire") and if they happen upon an interesting scene, and happen to notice the details, well---what crime have they committed, against your high notions of decency? And I must assume you know this eyewitness well, if you are certain that s/he was "drinking gin"...oh, I do think there are nut cases a-plenty among us, and me do thinks you be one of them.

Polishes Ophelia's Crown.. said...

Ophelia is always good for a chuckle. While admonishing me for not capitalizing yorkie she claims I 'be a nut'. Obviously a resident of Jacktown.

And no, normal people don't rush to the scene of a suicide, push their way through the crowd of officers and blue lights, and take notes from ten feet away. That IS, in fact, indecent. Decency would require that one excuse herself from the scene, allow officials to do all the gawking and say a brief prayer for the man on the stretcher.

All yorkie walkers are gin-swillers.

Just for the record, yorkie need not be capitalized any more than we capitalize bulldog, dachshund or terrier. But, back to your lofty perch as Kingfish's lieutenant....

Kingfish's aide de camp said...

Breeds that are named for their place of origin are always capitalized, you nincompoop at 6:50. Yorkshire terriers, Alsatians, German shepherds, Sealyhams, Dalmations, Bouviers de Flandres, Chesapeak Bay retrievers, to name but a few. Whether or not their owners swill gin and rubberneck at roadside mishaps is irrelevant.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
