Hinds County Court Judge Melvin Priester, Sr., denied bond for John Gregory Rollins yesterday and bound him over to the grand jury. Rollins stole a car in March and fled from police. JPD charged him with auto theft and felony fleeing. Judge Priester denied bond since he was free on bail for another felony when arrested. Rollins was also indicted in April for stealing another car in May 2015. It's John Rollins. He is a career criminal. It's what he does. The victim, Tara Coxwell, posted this message on Facebook after he stole her car:
Today I was car jacked at a very nice, well known, Northeast Jackson business. The part of town where I grew up, my grandparents settled there, and my mom grew up as well. I am thankful that my babies were not in the car because he would have taken them with him. God was watching over us today. JPD did an amazing job, and within 30 minutes of making the 911 call, the monster was caught and they recovered my car. I have had many firsts today... being a victim of a crime, I have ridden in 3 police cars today(once in the back), been to my crime scene where he caught my car on fire, and went downtown to write a two page report so this monster will stay in jail.
JJ reported that Rollins had a history of arrests, convictions, and escaping punishment:
Court records state he received a suspended prison sentence of 3 years, 6 months on January 27, 2015 for motor vehicle theft. He also received a suspended prison sentence of 3 years and 364 days on September 9, 2012 for shoplifting as well.Rollins was sentenced on 3/23/11/ in Hinds County for
· burglary – vehicle and received one year and one day to serve and three years probation
· credit card fraud and received 10 months.
He was released on probation on 5/25/11, but his probation was later revoked. He was resentenced on 12/1/11 for the burglary conviction and received three years to serve with no probation. He spent 122 days in jail before being sentenced
He was sentenced for:
· Shoplifting on 9/18/12 to 1 year and 1 one day to serve with four years probation.
He was released on probation on 5/12/14. His probation was later revoked. He was sentenced again on 1/22/15 for vehicle theft and received 1 year and six months to serve and 3 years probation. He was released again on probation on 7/10/15. When his probation was revoked on 8/14/15 and he was sentenced to the technical violation center for 180 days.
It remains to be seen whether MDOC will go to court to revoke his probation for committing more felonies. Court records showed nothing had yet been filed. JJ contacted MDOC and is awaiting a response to an inquiry on Rollins.
Kingfish note: Nice job, Judge. DA indicted him for habitual. So far, JPD, DA, and Judge are doing their jobs. Come on, MDOC, revoke his ass.

Finally a step in the right direction. Now please surprise me again.
this animal has lost the right to live in society. do we have a "three strikes" felony law here? if we did he'd be serving life without parole
I'm at least grateful that all his felonies have been non violent.
PittPanther - Once again you reveal to all the world what a dumb-ass you are. I'm almost certain that Mrs. Coxwell would rather have been hit upside the head with a board than have to endure the mental anguish and emotional trauma this situation has visited upon her.
That POS has been stealing and breaking into cars since 2006. He didn't just start stealing in 2012...he's been at it for years. Damn ridiculous he's allowed outside the wire.
Several cops said he is not dumb. He has the system figured out. He is also a problem down at the jail as he will stir up other inmates to act up. They can't wait to see him go back to MDOC>
Drop him on an island 1,000 miles from anywhere. Problem solved.
I can believe he would be called smart compared to Jackson cops. That still isn't something to be impressed with.
