Oxford establishments busted selling booze to minors

Attorney General Jim Hood issued the following press release:

Attorney General's Office Alcohol & Tobacco Enforcement Division
Compliance Check Yields 13 Citations in Oxford for Selling Alcohol to Minors

Jackson, Miss.- The Mississippi Attorney General’s Alcohol & Tobacco Enforcement Division in conjunction with the Oxford Police Department conducted alcohol and beer compliance checks in Oxford resulting in the issuance of 13 citations for selling alcohol to minors.

"The safety of our young people is at the heart of this law. It states very simply that it is it is illegal in Mississippi to sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 21,” said Attorney General Jim Hood. “College is an exciting and very important part of life, and we have a responsibility to help young people have as safe of an environment as possible. I want our young people and our retailers to be fully aware that we will continue to strictly enforce our compliance checks statewide, especially in college towns”

"Our thanks to the Oxford Police Department for their outstanding assistance in this effort." Attorney General Hood also encouraged retailers to be proactive, saying, "The Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement Division provides training for staff and management of any retail establishment which sells alcohol. I urge business owners and managers to contact my office, and ask for on-site training. The lives of our children and loved ones are at risk whenever alcohol consumption and driving are mixed. Other dangers include binge or excessive drinking which can also result in overdose, an accident or injury. Retailers who are vigilant in following the law can significantly improve a safe environment for all."

According to state law, any person selling beer to a person under the age of 21 years can face a fine of up to $500, up to six months in jail or both. Any place of business making a sale of beer to an underage person can be fined and/or suffer administrative charges. For a first offense, a retailer may be fined not less than $500 but not more than $1,000 and/or be prohibited from selling beer for three months. For a second offense occurring within 12 months of the first offense, a fine of not less than $500 but not more than $1,500 and be prohibited from selling beer for six months. For a third offense occurring within 12 months of the first offense, a fine of not less than $1,000 but not more than $5,000 and be prohibited from selling beer for one year.

Attorney General Hood concludes, “If you sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 21, you will pay a hefty fine to the State, and if you continue to sell you could lose your permit to sell. We appreciate the support and commitment of local law enforcement agencies, and I am certain that our combined efforts will vastly help reduce the sale of alcohol to underage drinkers,” said Attorney General Jim Hood.

During the past fiscal year, the Attorney General’s Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement Unit has conducted more than 6,000 compliance checks with 203 buys for a 3.28% buy rate across the state.

Certainly Jim Hood has some bigger fish to fry. Pissing off the Rebels is no way to win reelection.

I would be surprised if they weren't selling to minors, like every other college bar in America.

Perhaps he should remove his reelection signs from Lafayette County and place them somewhere he might get a vote!!!!!!!

The convenience stores should get off because the beer is warm anyway. Ice distribution is the biggest racket in Lafayette county.

Good chicken on a stick at the Lamar Express, by the way (if it's the same one I recall from way back when).

Does EVERYTHING have to be a partisan issue?

These a-hole "establishments" don't card and don't care. Your son or daughter gets killed in a DUI because some 17yo twit got served 4 beers, see how you feel about them then.

Oxford is so backwoods, they sell hot beer to minors.

/4:30- you can quick chill beer with dry ice/water mixture or salt on ice. It will chill quickly.

Surprised they didn't go after the 10,000 liquor stores that would sell a pint of scotch to anybody that can reach the counter.

Gotta love the white trash that party in the grove with their mixed drinks, polo shirts, blue blazers, duck head khakis, deck shoes and drinker coed girlfriends that hold each other's hand while they vomit

deck shoes. your age is only surpassed by your bias toward cows. maroon.

5:50 Cold beer was sold to those minors. Also, you seem upset. Did the well-dressed, white trash at the Grove vomit on you or you significant other once?

I understand the fact that these businesses violated the law.... But, why does this blog feel the need to publish ALL of Jim Hood's press releases? It seems like Jim Hood publishes a press release each week.... not a bad campaign strategy. BTW, does anyone have a link to the negative ad Hood is running against Hurst?

I’ve seen some pretty drunk minors on the state college campus in Starkville.

But I guess they do need to blow off some steam.

The rigors of a turf grass management curriculum have to be very stressful on their young minds.

Not to worry. Pastor Freeze will convene a prayer group and pray this shit away. He has 120 thousand Twitter followers and a seminary degree from some mail order house. Now that he's performed the 'Miracle In Tuscaloosa', this will be a chump-project. All we need to do is get him away from the microphone and keep him focused.

a) How does this become a MSU vs. OM thread? How? Is Starkville now a symbol of teetotaling moralism?

b) All it takes is a bit of travel to see that MS is lax when it comes to checking ID. Out of state,
I know to keep my ID handy. Here? Not so much, if ever.

Hood says he doesn't have the resources to fight public corruption yet he has someone cracking down on 20 year olds drinking in a college town? I am almost as shocked that underage college students would drink as I am that Jim Hood would give corrupt politicians a free pass.

So let me get this straight. At least fifty percent of the contributors here think it's perfectly acceptable for bars and beer stores to sell to minors? And because you crackers have seen it going on in one location (or so you claim), it therefore must be acceptable in another? And, in the interest of game day and ticket proceeds and sales of sleeveless sweaters.......it's OK for children to be drunk?

This is precisely the same crowd of goobers who celebrate the annual standings in 'Ten Wildest Campuses in America'.

Kingfish said...

Probably not. I bet more than a few think the drinking age should be 18 and I am one of them.

Anonymous said...

@9:35 I wasn't aware the junction was striving to be the grove? I must have missed that news release.

Anonymous said...

You can vote and die for your country at 18. You should be able to have a drink.

8:45 is a cracker.

I don't like that drinking-age law so it's perfectly OK if I ignore it.

Anonymous said...

The drinking age used to be 18. But they were too irresponsible and wreck less. So the gooberment forced all the states to boost it to 21.

And, I have been told, that 18 year olds can drink on military base...but not in town. Is this still true?

Thank god the Double Quick didn't get busted !!!!!

Some of you might remember the law enforcement officer working traffic at Ole Miss, following a game, about nine years ago. His family has an empty chair for him now on Holidays. Children drinking beer removed him from our midst, forever.

But, shit, the driver was old enough to go to war!

Anonymous said...

I don't think an 18-year-old should be allowed to drink, go to war, or be allowed to make any major decisions. Most of them are just not that bright. However, if you are going to allow them to go to war, then all bets are off, and they should be allowed to drink. When I was 18 and at Ole Miss, I did drink. And thank God I didn't have a car because I would have driven it while drinking. My mom used to say "God takes care of fools and crazy people." I was definitely foolish at that age.

Yes 7:36pm....a cop did die. Of course, the kid was doing coke and not just drunk, but that isn't the point. That is why he took off. He was about to be arrested for possession of cocaine.

I guess those of us over 18 never cause traffic fatalities drunk or sober?

Again, you can be forced (via the draft) to fight and die for your country whether you agree with the cause or not. You should be able to have a beer or 12 if you want to. I personally don't drink but maybe a beer or two a week with a dinner that it compliments, so I am no promoter of it. I just believe in freedom and personal responsibility.

Who is the Hottest Reporter in Jackson?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
