Randy has been the "chief in waiting" for about ten years... congrats to a well deserved promotion.
Incoming! It's time for the onslaught of posts about whoever that ex-cop was.
I had heard Mr. Archie was the front runner.
Q: How many people did they interview for the job? A: 2 Q: How many people applied for the job? A: 2 Q: How many people outside the dept were interviewed? A: 0 Q: Was the interview process open so others could apply? A:NO Q: Did the city of Ridgeland want someone outside the Dept. to be interviewed? A: NO Q: Why wouldn't the city of Ridgeland want to interview more people for the job of police chief? A: ??????????????
because they have a lot to hide at the RPD and they don't want outsiders nosing around and finding out all the problems.
Daniel Soto! (I just wanted to go on and get that out of the way)
Give the guy a chance. Jeez.
@9:41 don't think any commnentor has complained about the choice. Jeez
Randy Tyler has been there a long time and
deserve a chance. Why are people scared to post there names. Dwight Morrison
Retired RPD.
Randy Tyler will not be a "YES" man to the Mayor and Board. He is absolutely the best choice to lead the Ridgeland Police Department, not only from internal choices, but also from afar. He lead the department on an interim basis while Jimmy Houston ran for sheriff and moral at the RPD was higher than it had been for a long time. Great things are happening in Ridgeland! I hope Chief Houston enjoys his well earned retirement. He served Ridgeland well and leaves it a better place.
Give Randy Tyler a chance he deserve that:
Dwight Morrison (ret RPD)
Randy will do fine, he just needs to get a little stronger at playing politics.
So no one has any idea why the city of Ridgeland didn't allow others to apply for the job? Randy will be great but that's not the point. This was a closed, rigged interview process. Basically a joke. Why is there even a Human Resources director for the city if this is how they run it? Are they going to do all job openings this way? Only backward, incompetent or crooked municipalities hire this way. Take your pic.
HR 101. you don't have closed interviewing for job openings. There are many reasons why. They teach that shit in college and lawyers love it when people don't do their homework. I would like to see the educational background of the lady who is in charge of HR at Ridgeland because there is no way a competent HR Head would allow this. If she was forced to have closed interviews she should have complained loudly. Why would the board of Aldermen allow this? Do they just do what Gene says without question?
It doesn't make a damned bit of difference WHY, 10:36. The fact is, they are at liberty to hire and promote as they please without mandates from others to advertise, keep it open for a certain amount of time, log the name/race/sex of all applicants along with the reasons not hired, yada yada.
There is more than enough of that mandate/interference crap to go around.
Instead of you harping twice on here about interviewing outside the department, how about you telling me what's wrong with promotion from within of well qualified, experienced personnel. It's called upward mobility and invites esprit de corps. You won't find those terms in the EEOC diversity and quota manual.
By the way, I never heard of the man and have no clue what color he is.
10:18 is close, a lot of things are happening in Ridgleland. Wether they are great or not is a matter of opinion. I bet this will be the last white police chief in the City. Ridgelabd is quickly turning in Jackson.
@11:54 is right on. Anyone wanting to file a discrimination lawsuit about this hiring is salivating.
When was the last time any commenter went to or heard of a public interview for any position, public or private. The police chief's job is a statutory position hired by the board of aldermen. Confidential information is exchanged. Ideas and strategy is discussed. I'm unaware of any department head position whether municipal, county, state or federal where the actual interview is conducted in a public forum. Certain positions that require senate conformation maybe, but not a public works director or fire or police chief.
Don't live in Ridgeland, don't know the man but if he is qualified by experience, has a good record and preformed as an interim chief it certainly acceptable to promote from within.
11:54 and others who are 'salivating'....you don't know jack shit. You're salivating alright.
You and thousands of others salivate any time you think you can file a complaint and get some sort of redress. Go for it. You'll be wasting your time.
There is no requirement of any sort that this position be advertised or have and open application period. Maybe you thought (or wished) it was covered by the State Personnel Board. Maybe you thought it was federally mandated. Maybe you thought the EEOC could jump in and disrupt the process. Maybe you didn't think.
This is not the first time 11:54 has entered these discussions before, with the same bitching mantra, criticizing the HR Director of this city.
This person at 11:54 pops up from time to time and obviously either works at city hall or is the wife of a disgruntled city employee. It's malcontents like 11:54 who bring a city down and turn morale into a shit puddle. The same people who will steal your soft drink out of the breakroom fridge.
I hope he curtails his rookie officers from going out to places like Old Agency Parkway and Livingston Road (where there is no speed limit sign coming in from the county) and writing needless tickets.
Ridgeland has so few places a rookie can write a bunch of tickets that they have to go to the same old speed traps to nab people over and over. This is when people start to hate officers.
It is generally understood that people who do that job have an issue or two that attract them to the work and they persecute the citizenry as a result.
You say Ridgeland has something to hide? It did for many years, how do you think Charles Newell continued to be chief, even after his cancer progressed to the point where he couldn't show up for work. Remember when Charlie would park his car in the handicap parking spot, even though the very next spot was PLAINLY marked RESERVED POLICE CHIEF. ??
But nontheless....Randy Tyler deserves his chance no matter what the rest of you may think, say, or do.

Become more familiar with he law. It says that speed limits are 25 M.P.H. unless otherwise posted.

6/18@11:54 oh please! This is standard HR in most state agencies. Oh no wait, excuse me, they just call them on the phone and tell them when to start.
These are my wishes for the new chief:
> Ticket folks that cover their county names with their car dealer tag frames. Noone gives a crap where you bought your car.
> ticket all those landscapers from out of our county that have no trailer tags, no brake lights, and maybe no immigration papers?
> ticket bicycle riders that HOG Hwy 51 during 5:00 traffic. They ride in the middle of the @#@& road!
>Ticket all those folks that text and drive (texting KF at stop lights is permitted)
>Police dept needs to become knowledgeable about trailer weights and tag/permits-many have overweighted trailers and their are special restrictions and it's not enforced
>Ticket those that don't have covers on their trucks/trailers so crap doesn't fall off and hit my windshield
>Ticket folks that have road rage on Hwy 51 before 8am and after 5pm b/c they didn't get their lazy butt out of bed and leave on time or they can't wait to get to the gas station after work to get their beer and moonpies.
>Please enforce 30mph on the road that runs by Hite Wolcott, darn tailgaters
Whew I feel better to throw that up! Thanks!!!!
It's really sad how far gone Ridgeland is. Northpark is now the METRO. County Line is looking more like Hwy 80. It is just very sad. I hate to say it but when you have apartments, especially those that take gov't funding, this is what you get. Scared to go to Ridgeland Walmart and I have not stepped foot in the movie theatre in years. But then again, here we go again, you can thank our dear politicians for affording the luxury of paying most of the rent for those that can't pay it and this is what you get! Thugs. What happened to the old days when folks moved back in with family during difficult times to get back on their feet? Now, the taxpayer funds these folks. That's the reason I hope Madison NEVER NEVER gets apartments! But here we go again, we keep putting people in office that votes for stupid ##*$& like this and it does nothing but get private individuals (property owners/realtors/developers) richer and richer and richer because of gov't funding! I really feel sorry for people that retired or moved to Ridgeland many years ago and didn't foresee this mess. It seems as though Ridgeland police have their hands full......and the "next" Jackson? It already is Jackson! And with gov't loans/HUD housing, Madison is slowly becoming Ridgeland/Jackson! When I was young, I worked two jobs to afford a downpayment on my house! Hell, now you can get funding and low interest rates under various programs. That's why BMWs and Escalades are parked at apartments. They have money to spend. Unbelievable! Hats off to you Ridgeland Police!!!
6/18, 11:54 HR Educational Background? It really doesn't require an education. Human Relations is an ART not a SCIENCE. And the rest is the DOL/EEOC/OSHA/etc. law which is updated based on what's passed and only used as a reference guide. No education - the state agency HR folks I know have degrees in other subject like "English" or "Business". Remember it's an ART not a SCIENCE - it's a talent to be diplomatic, sensitive, cautious, and attentive...that's what's wrong with most HR employees, they don't have these skills.
I think Madison Mayor appoints the chief of police and no one that I know of has ever complained about the process. If we vote for her for mayor, then we have to be confident that she'll pick the right person for the job. So if you don't like the choice, maybe complain to your mayor? Maybe he had a voice in this? But I think you are beating a dead horse for sure. But thank KF for allowing us to vent on his board. This is great to let off steam - you seemed to have taken this very personal however.
8:04, what a wasted puff of pompous smoke. If you think Human Resources doesn't require specific education and training perhaps you should spend five minutes with your search engine.
HR managers are charged with the mission of maintaining a culture, not a mission of displaying diplomacy, caution, sensitivity and attentiveness. Sorry you didn't get the job you thought you deserved. It's because you were not qualified.
Did someone mention 'the way it's done in most state agencies'? Newsflash; A municipality is not a state agency and municipal jobs, unlike state agency jobs, are not covered by a state personnel board.
Even though there ARE some few 'exempt' jobs in all state agencies, 97% of those jobs are indeed covered by the personnel board and advertising and open application periods are required.
This is, however, NOT required of this position, regardless of the thoughts of you moaners. So, he's not black and he's not from Detroit or Canton and the NAACP didn't get to oversee the process.
Put a muffler on your car, take the window tint off, don't smoke dope while driving and ditch the NASCAR tag and you'll be just fine.
I'm not a cop, don't live in Ridgeland but this I do know. No one is more deserving of this job than Randy Tyler. I've known Randy since we were in high school. He was a good man then and he's a good man now.
When Houston ran for sheriff, Randy was appointed interim chief and from what I understand, moral within the department was better than it had been during Jimmy Houston's entire tenure there.
Ridgeland should never have hired him back when he lost the sheriff's race.
