State Auditor Stacey Pickering issued the following press release:
Oxford Deputy City Clerk Indicted
JACKSON-
State Auditor Stacey Pickering announced today that Alisa Liggins,
Deputy City Clerk in Oxford, has been indicted on one count of
embezzlement. Liggins was booked at the Lafayette County Sheriff’s
Office yesterday and released on $5,000 bond.
Liggins,
46, is accused of embezzling $12,703.50 over the course of several
months in 2012 from the City of Oxford. The embezzlement was
accomplished by taking City Court receipts. Liggins then attempted to
conceal the embezzlement scheme by delaying General Ledger entries,
bank deposits and using future receipts to balance General Ledger
entries.
“Ms.
Liggins stole from the taxpayers of Oxford and she will be held
accountable for her actions,” Auditor Pickering said. “I thank our
Special Agents, the Oxford Police Department and District Attorney Ben
Creekmore for their hard work on this case.”
Liggins has worked as a Deputy Clerk for the Oxford City Clerk’s Office since 2005.

One small problem Mr. Pickering: The City of Oxford has nothing to do with Justice Court. Justice Court is an arm of COUNTY government. Its those dam nitpicking details that matters...
Ha Who was doing the reconciliations? Surely had to be someone else in on the scheme or they weren't doing their job in the first place. These people need to thrown in prison for YEARS to be made an example for possible, future embezzlers of governmental funds.
3:37 chiming in again: Pickering will quietly ok probation or very short jail term along with an agreement for her to repay funds which will be loudly trumpeted in a press release as a successful effort to RECOVER stolen funds.
I agree. Bond these people, as private business does, collect from the surety, and throw their asses in jail for substantial time. Headline the other day was deserved: Miss. most corrupt state in USA. She's why.
Must be a huge invasion of bots in our comments. Commencing third attempt to post...
Does she have any vacation days she can turn in or any boats she can sell? Pickering seems to like those kind of deals.
Not to make light of what this employee is accused on doing, but there are MUCH bigger fish who are stealing from the taxpayers who are never touched by the Auditor's Office or, if Pickering is pressured to finally act, are let off with a slap on the hand. Let's do something about the big fish, too.
This woman stole your money (if you live in Lafayette county) Throw her A$$ in the Lafayette County Slammer ! This money could have been used for traveling to Omaha
!!!!!
!
Bill, just tell the electorate to vote for this guy because he is new blood. He is no Ronald Reagan, but he is a new voice for Mississippi. At least we are pretty much assured after winning this important election, he at his age will not retire and have a Governor appoint an interim Senator. BTW I voted for Cochran in the primary because I thought he was a shoe in. I have reconsidered and will not vote that way Tuesday. Thx
She turned herself in. Wasn't Justice Court. It was cash from the rec league park. Since it was cash, no one would have caught her if she didn't turn herself in.
I thought democrats only held these municipal jobs in the Delta counties. Oh, wait...some food writer toured the Delta a few months ago, penning an article which included Oxford eateries as being in the Delta. So, did she steal from the county or the city? Is Pickering out to lunch?
About 5 years ago, when I was in graduate school at Ole Miss, I got a ticket for speeding from a Lafayette County Sheriff. Paid the ticket (in cash) at the Justice Court a few days later, only to receive a notice a few months later saying that my license had been suspended for failure to pay the ticket.
Thankfully, I had my paperwork showing that I had paid (signed by the clerk) so they worked it out and license was reinstated. The person in the Justice office said they must have "lost" the payment.
Now, it is all so clear....
Welcome to Mississippi, 9:09.
is that all that was stolen? I would like to know the labor in man hours that it took to investigate this case? or was it just an easy case to close and take credit? I cannot believe that they would make a big deal about such minimal dollars even though it is wrong. there are much larger agencies, noprofit businesses and individuals that are screwing over the taxpayer through grant recipient funding that not ever touched by our state investigation authorities. ......wonder why? Is it because it is funneled through fed grant funding and there's just no one that can stop the abuse!
909 same thing happened to me in columbus
It makes no difference how many man hours were expended in the effort to prosecute. The important thing is prosecution and the deterrent effect it may have on others so inclined.
Criminals are not prosecuted at a clip concurrent with the magnitude of the crime.
All these Mississippi public officials and government employees arrested and prosecuted, leading Mississippi to a top ranking in "Most Corrupt State"...I wonder if it would be possible to view a chart showing the following:
County of Residence
Race
Educational Level
Position Held
Political Affiliation
841 this is me.... I do agree with you. I submitted that out of emotional frustration because it is rarely seen when an executive head of a state or fed agency is fired for corruption. Why? are they ALL honest? it seems to be county or city officials. are state executive heads just secretly told to go their own way and laid off? has anyone ever investigated the turnover of execs and wondered why? and what about the recent DEQ article? why did a journalist have to uncover this? that is an embarrassment to the state. and she resigned as well? is the state going to investigate this? Are we not going to hear any more about this and it be shoved under the rug like it never happened? didn't she pay over a million dollars and a three year period to her "consultant"? and didn't these two ladies serve on several boards/committees In Mississippi.....especially during the former governors reign? does anyone not care about our tax money being paid to a consultant in this manner? why are we protecting this? let's use her as an example as well! Throw them all in jail!
845 exactly! Yes we are the most corrupt state! so what in the heck is our state auditor and AGs office doing about this? and how many STATE officials have been caught in the last let's say 10 years? or would that look bad to the person that appointed them?
845pm haha. yes that's so true. we send so many people to jail that it has catapulted us to those rankings.
