The death of Mark Mayfield moved Amile Wilson to pen this little epistle about the past week in Mississippi politics.
Putting a few things in perspective as an on the ground Mississippian
who works in political consulting and is involved in the electoral
process here as a county committeeman: There are some unique things
which affect the way our state holds elections. MS has only had a
Republican Party for about 20 years and only in the past 3 has that
party become dominant. I’ll try to supply some unbiased “just the facts”
commentary below.
No one registers to vote by party in MS and primaries are “open”
allowing anyone to vote in any party. This has helped many conservative
Democrats with deep “pro business ties” be elected in Democrat districts
and many moderate Republicans be elected. It also allows for people to
move from one ideology to the next in a much more comfortable way.
Plenty of people will self identify as Democrats because they are
“Southerners” or some other community reason while voting Republican and
becoming increasingly conservative over the years.
Even Chris McDaniel voted in 2003 in a Democratic primary because that
was the only election that would decide who his local officials were.
Nearly every self identified R or D has switched primaries for that
reason. It’s common. In fact every campaign I’ve ever seen has had a
coalition director specifically focused on crossover outreach.
The cutoff to register to run was constitutionally set as March 1st,
a date which I’m relatively certain is designed to prevent losers in a
primary from running in the general - that it would give them an unfair
advantage or something. Write-ins are only allowed if the party nominee
has died or is forced to withdraw “for personal reasons” before the
election but after the ballots are printed. That means that if Cochran
were to die or withdraw today, the party would appoint someone to
replace him on the ballot, but if that happened 3 days before the
election, a write-in option would be available.
Thad Cochran has also spent a lot of time reaching out to minority
communities in the state, directing federal research dollars to African
American communities, helping place military installations in targeted
locations, etc. He also, reportedly, averages a whopping 25% support
among black voters in general elections and has kept positive
relationships with mayors of all stripes throughout the state. One of
the perks of being an incumbent US Senator. The McDaniel campaign was
warned early on to expect unprecedented black turnout.
What was not expected was that McDaniel would become a victim of 21st
century technology. The presence of recorders everywhere brought
McDaniel’s talk radio days back to haunt him. Talk radio - like other
news/entertainment only works if it is engaging. Sometimes that
engagement involves humor, satire, and other devices which can backfire.
McDaniel’s radio shows engaged Liberals throughout MS into “panic mode”
and caused them to rally to defeat McDaniel.
Though they were worried about the possibility, few of these Liberal voices thought he actually could win.
When the runoff became reality, Liberal groups jumped into action mobilizing
voters, African American pastors launched GOTV efforts. Some of it was
funded by Cochran’s campaign, some of it was funded by third parties not
affiliated with the campaign.
In an unprecedented twist, turnout went up from the primary to the
runoff as both sides realized that is was a numbers game. McDaniel had
people who showed up to vote “for McDaniel and for Liberty” and he had
people voting “against Thad and against Incumbents.” Cochran had people
who showed up to vote for “Cochran and tradition” and people voting
“against McDaniel and the Talk Radio Personality.” Many were put off by
Cochran’s many year in DC while many others were put off by McDaniel and
the old Southernism “Never Speak ill of your elders.” There were a
number of cultural factors affecting this race and in the end the
campaign focused on local issues and southern tradition won over the
campaign focused on national change.
Parties, not the government, host primaries in MS. Hinds County Chairman
Pete Perry also owns a consulting firm and was hired to handle some
GOTV efforts for Cochran. Other party chairman had publicly endorsed
Cochran while others had publicly endorsed McDaniel (one committee even
officially censured McDaniel). But in the end, votes are counted by
machines operated by Precinct Managers who volunteer (for the pay of
$100 for a 14 hour day) to run the polls.
On election day there was - as there always is - some amount of human
error existed in the managing of the polls (there always is) but there
is yet to be any evidence of enough fraud or error to throw the results
of the election into doubt.

How powerful the turnout was can be seen in the fact that many
precincts, in fact many precincts Cochran won, ran out of ballots on
election day and people waited around until more ballots could be
printed and delivered. No one expected that level of turnout.
The election has been rough on both sides of the GOP. People affiliated
with both campaigns have been arrested and now a friend has died as a
result.
I will not comment at this time on the ongoing challenge to the results
except to say that as of today we know that there were some
irregularities which favored both sides. Some can be attributed to
malice. Some to common human mistakes which happen in elections every
year. As of yet, the amount of those irregularities do not amount to
enough to call into question the results. McDaniel’s campaign continues
to search through the books.
Where do we go from here. We go to a point of rational minds talking to
one another. A friend has died. That is too high a price to have paid
for this election.

How many other states allow D or R to crossover today?
I've heard equally reliable (or unreliable as the case may be) report varying numbers of Open Primary states but the number I keep hearing is 11.
crossover is strange and O disagree about it having a honest useful purpose. have real disdain for voter fraud. anyone who voted in the first primary as a Democrat is guilty of fraud by voting in the runoff as a republican? this was widely communicated as the rule to vote. I would like to see all names of those who did this published and charges filed. Large numbers of convictions would end any malicious crossover voting in the future.
This is the kind of dialogue we need. McDaniel has every right to go through the ballots, but the language and key words used to incite the base need to be dialed back. People are angry and bitter as people tend to be. Leaders should manage those emotions.
As Burke said, the truth is easy to find, but hard to interpret. The reality is that most all of us have done our part by voting. The election is over, so the boiling over can simmer down. No need to spout out rumors to rally the fanatics.

14 states use a pure open primary system, and an additional 9 (including Mississippi) use a mixed primary.
What is wrong with open primaries? It is a double edged sword that swings both ways if you moved to a closed system. What about Republicans in a majority Democratic jurisdiction. Would you disenfranchise them too? Even the late Frank Melton (flawed as he was) said he was really a Republican but he ran as a (D) because an (R) would never win Jackson these days. Yaber probably won the edge over a far left (D) because of crossover (R) voters. Also, where was the TP indignation when the Hinds Co. BOS (Fat Albert & The Bad Lt.) disenfranchised most of the (R)s in the county. Not a peep. But we worked it out and put an (R) on the Board anyway to better represent the demographics.
The moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for because you may just get it.
Only 12 states use a strictly Closed Primary System. DE,FL,KS,KY,ME,NV,NJ,NM,NY,OR,PA,WY. The other 38 states have varying sets of rules set by each party within the state. Even in those states with closed primaries, the parties reserve the right to allow voters who are unaffiliated with their party to vote in their primaries.

Well, there you have the Barbour-Cochran spin from a consultant. What is ignored in this "analysis" is the malicious, racially polarizing and cynical use of the African American community by one Republican against another. Honesty and integrity went missing in the Barbour-Cochran campaign to preserve what we lifelong Mississippians know is a miserable status quo. This "analysis" is accurate to the extent it concludes that dirty tactics worked as they often do in elections. Once again, way to go Mississippi. You have political leaders who have affirmed, once again, that some things never change. But it is at least notable that among Republican voters, McDaniel won and that, for me, counts for something significant.

Trying to pit Cochran as an Obama sympathizer is polarizing and inaccurate. Playing the fear card against McDaniel is polarizing. Political campaigns are tough and play to whatever you want to listen to.
Also, there is no factual evidence that McDaniel won among Republican voters. If there is, I would like to see numbers. From an objective standpoint, that would be interesting.

I have a nephew in high school. He is politically interested. This is the first time he actually went house to house and emailed people to vote. His preference was Thad Cochran. I don't know what he thinks after the SWAT team showed up (Although they were visible but not active) in the arrest of a man who apparently told someone how to et access to St. Catherine's. This man was accused of a crime which at worst would be a misdemeanor and was asked for a $250,000.00 bond. It sends a very bad message that politics is involved with a respected man has to kill himself because of his political beliefs. His family and friends will suffer for the rest of their lives because of this "overkill" for the reelection of a man who probably has no intention of completing his 6 year term.

12:34 pm First of all, 2013 is estimates. 2010 is more reliable. But,ok, I'll play.
The numbers you've given fail to account for the fact that slightly more than 62% of MS's population is white. Your numbers are raw estimates of individuals, not percentages.
Only 20% of MS's population have advanced degrees ( Masters or higher) according to 2013 estimates but that is quite a bit higher than the 6.7% confirmed in the 2010 detailed census. There were only 123,159 post graduates in 2010.
You'll have divide the total number of degrees in each race by the total numbers of each race to get percentages of those in each race that get a degree. You also can't include Hispanics and Asians with degrees in the white vote.
It would also behoove you to compare 2000 with 2010 to see where the most gains are made in educational achievement by race.
I'm puzzled by your 18+ numbers for professional degrees and PhDs since the youngest age would be likely be 24 for a doctoral. While the youngest age ever to get a doctoral degree is 16, that is extraordinarily rare so these numbers you list are rather incredible.
But, to make your point you'd also have to look at the educational level of the percentage of eligible voters who actually vote by race. You aren't doing that. You are assuming facts not in evidence. You are assuming that whites who vote have a higher level of education than blacks who vote.
Why don't you look at the percentage of college educated and post graduates by county? I think you'll find much larger numbers in the runoff district to be in Hinds and Madison. You'll find that 37480 of MS's population of college graduation+ lived in within the Jackson ,7677 in Madison, and 355,241 in all of MS. Laurel had 2109.

My reference was from the census- educational category and the .csv retrieved did not have "estimate"; however I did see another report on the census site that did refer to estimate. They omitted it on my report, most likely in error. It was govt data, what do we expect? By the way, why do we have estimates on 2013 when education calendar years (@ least most ed grants) run 2012-2013? They should have that data loaded by now.

Does anyone else find it strange that 3 attorneys, with Cherry Laurel street addresses in Bridgewater, have died in the past 5 months? Mrs. Waycaster, Precious Martin and now Mayfield?
