Tax increase passes (Updated)

The Madison County Board of Supervisors just voted 3-2 to increase property taxes by 2 mills in county, 1/2 mill countywide. Supervisor Gerald Steen made the motion, Supervisor Karl Banks seconded it, and Supervisor Paul Griffin voted with them for the motion. Supervisors Ronnie Lott and John Bell Crosby voted against it. Looks like Mr. Steen is the new Tim Johnson or Ronnie Chappell. Enjoy it. You guys voted for this last year.

By the way...., did I mention the board also approved a 3% across the board pay raise for county employees? They really tightened up that budget, didn't they? Suckers.

Update: Supervisor Lott held up this sign tonight. Now that's what I'm talking about.

They had to raise revenues...else Meredith Whitney would be talking Madison County bond defaults....

Wishing We had elected D I Smith instead of Gerald Tim Johnson Steen .....

Here is a quote from Mr. Steen while campaigning:

Steen maintained, “It is especially important to unify District 3, and I feel confident that citizens will see what my candidacy is—policy versus politics. It is time we find solutions, not excuses, to our problems so that our County can progress. And, it is my belief, that more taxes will not provide those solutions to the place we all call home.”

What a joke!! I miss D.I. Thanks for voting him out fellow Madison county voters enjoy what you got..

These supes are a joke --- This vote was orchestrated so Crosby could vote against it so he could run for mayor----Vote all of these fools out if you want to preserve any integrity in Madison county----Tonight they are laughing at how you were manipulated

Actually, this sounds fair to me. As a resident of the city of Madison I don't want to subsidize services for the county residents.
Plus, it is amazing to me how some folks come up with all sorts of theories as to why some voted they way they did. I voted for John Bell Crosby and feel that he is representing me well. It will be an interesting mayoral race in Madison next year. John Bell and Mary are both friends of mine, and I wish them both well.

7:59 hit the nail on the head. This kind of game playing has been going on in Madison County for too long.

"You won't see me driving a county car. I have no need for it and will drive my own." Quote from the fellow who works at Kroger and drives the black crown vic in the parking lot.

Gerald Steen "Tim Johnson" ran slap over John Bell in tonight's meeting--It was pathetic-If Kroger boy can not control one LOUD mouth supervisor --How can he run a city-

Anonymous said...

I guess John Bell changed his mind about the car, didn't he? Heck, I can't blame him for that.

Anonymous said...

Is it true that Gerald Steen was once a democrat--Did he ever attend the Democratic convention--He would have made a FINE delegate-Give him an Obama bumper sticker-He stuck the people tonight--

Madison County has some of the lowest taxes in the State of MS, the best county services in the state, and some of the highest property values in the state. But the citizens of Madison County don't want to pay for the outstanding services that the county offers. Go figure!! Since when has it been a crime to raise taxes if there isn't enough revenue available to pay for the cost of services? It's about time the Supes did what was right, instead of scoring political points. Point being, keep ignoring county employees raises and watch how the level of county services start to decline. Then who loses? The residents of Madison County!!!

Gerald Steen has now taught the citizens the lesson that he is a RINO and CAN"T BE COUNTED ON TO TELL THE TRUTH and CAN'T BE TRUSTED WITH MONEY, under any circumstances. He already has a reputation with fellow Supervisors that he is not a man of his word and cannot be trusted. Now, he has demonstrated that his word, integrity, and character are worthless...

So he has filled the shoes... and is now certifiably GERALD "TIM JOHNSON" STEEN!!! Let's not forget his record:
1. Voted to re-hire RUDY WARNOCK as County Engineer... No wonder there was a tax increase.
2. Voted to hire Heath Hall, his campaign manager, as County Publicist to improve the County image, at $2,500 per month!
3. VOTED TO HIRE BUTLER SNOW as LOBBYIST for economic development with no bid contract.

Sad, Sad Day for Madison County and its citizens!

10:19, with the economy in the toilet, do you really think this is the time to give raises to county employees?

To all of you who are saying "We won't forget." I've lived in Madison County all my life, and I can tell you that these bozos are not worried. They know you WILL forget.

Shadowfax said...

10:18; There are very clear reasons for a county like Madison having 'low taxes'. You come across as sounding identical to the 'Pay your fair share' crowd.

Anonymous said...

Power and prosperity are the first two ingredients to corruption

Anonymous said...

Pay your fair share!

Where will the white folks run to next? They're getting mighty close to Canton. There's always Bovina to the west.

John Bell gaveled Mary Mclaurin, the former chairman of the Madison County Executive Committee and would not let her as questions or anyone else--The fix was on--

Kingfish said...

Actually the meeting was a continuation of the prior meeting. The hearing did not adjourn but was continued. Thus Ms. McClaurin had already been given her time to speak. Nice little trick.

Anonymous said...

Yes it is time to give the county employees a raise. It has been 4 years since their last raise not to mention that their insurance has increased each year.

Mary McLaurin said...

Don't forget to thank ol' Republican in Name Only "Raising Taxes is NOT an Option" Gerald Steen when your tax bill comes in this next time. He is the ONLY Republican to vote for the tax increase. Voted with the two Democrats Karl Banks and Paul Griffin. Please, please, please DO NOT vote for this RINO again! He only won his election by less than 200 votes last time after the BOS rigged the redistricting lines to eliminate their opponents after qualifying dates had passed. Sorry, they won't be able to do this again. Good people like Russ Latino and Philip Gunn and our Governor Phil Bryant and the House of Representatives and Senate passed a bill so this won't happen again. This is taxaction without representation!

Anonymous said...

Yes, the majority of voters will quickly forget and will continue to cast votes as they are directed, in order to "maintain our property values" and the fine government services we've become accustomed to, while the land deals, no-bid contracts, and lobbyist agreements are made in the background, out of most of the public's eye. Even though Madison represents "the best of the best", the majority of the best are pretty clueless when it comes to their elected officials. All it takes to keep the masses happy is throw them a bone every now and then, and/or continue to bring up all the buzzwords they've been taught to listen for.

Kingfish said...

That's why I don't feel sorry for them. They were warned for the last few years. I don't blame the Supes. They were rewarded last year.

Bill Dees said...

As a resident of the City of Madison, I think the millage increase was necessary and appropriate. It was good government IMHO.

Anonymous said...

Can we get rid of the public relations person and the lobbiest on retainer? those two items would save us around $100,000. And what about increasing the dumping fee from $2 to $3. I also wonder whether the county employees would have agreed not to except a raise if it would have prevented the lay offs?

Anonymous said...

As a resident of the City of Madison, I wouldn't mind the increase to cover the previous waste if it came with a promise to eliminate the future waste that we'll get to pay for down the line. I have no problem at all with raises for county employees, it is all the other garbage that is the issue, and that needs to stop.

I miss the old/original Madison. One main road into town, Sledges on the corner ready to fix your car. No Wallyworld, no massive shopping centers with traffic everywhere, the small shops were great, no 'red brick' empires, and 2 bank locations. If you needed to get something not at the local small stores, then it was 15-30 minutes away, no problem. It was clean. It was quiet.

I look at it today and just get disgusted. Money, lies, cheating, filth. Many redefined 'progress'. Well, we've got crap stacked all over the place up here in Madison now and the costs are everywhere. What an improvement. You can't fart without hitting a politician, a Sally Sorority, yet another building, another bank because 200 just isn't quite enough, higher costs everywhere, or some jackoff who thinks his &^% don't stink.

How I miss that one road quiet, friendly town with Sledges on the corner of 51.

Those were the days. Now the crooks and crimnals have followed the money into our county. The common denominator is that Bob Montgomery is running the County through Karl Banks, Griffin, Steen and Crosby. And that is the rest of the story folks. Get rid of Banks and Griffin and things might change. Ask Karl Banks about that new outdoor grilling area. It is amazing how well you can live off of $45,000.00 per year.

So, I guess Mayor Mary's influence via Ronny Lott is not sufficient to determine the wishes of the board. If that's the case, she will work to have him defeated as she did with John Bell Crosby, Doug Jones, Bill Banks, and Louise Spivey. So far the only one to survive her wrath is John Bell Crosby. It will be interesting to see if Ronny can survive. He will do something within the next four years that will disappoint her....stay tuned.

Madison County, what a joke that place is, I wish Jackson would annex the place, they have a lot in common.

Shadowfax said...

9:18; You'll more likely see Madison annex Jacktown. Madison has toyed for years with the idea of owning a theme park. A zoo will do for starters. And they could hire a genius-troll like you to stand on a crate and collect tickets.

Anonymous said...

Thanx for the kind words Shadowfax, I think you are a moron-troll, btw.

Anonymous said...

Re: raises to county employees. Do you get a raise when you spend all day every day on Facebook? I want a job like that, too!

Anonymous said...

The Board of Supervisors need to go on the offense with a good news story... They could let the air out of the tax increase balloon if Steen, Crosby, and Lott would vote to rescind the NCL Landfill appeal.

The citizens of Madison County are begging them to simply do their job and quit the shenanigans of feeding the attorney and engineer. And, the no bid contract lobbyist and the campaign manager who is on the County payroll.

John Claud Owen said...

Do any of the Sups in MadisonCo pass themselves off as -- actually impersonate -- sworn law enforcement officers?

Anonymous said...

I think you are a moron-troll, btw.

And yet you are still here reading and responding.

Anonymous said...

Wait...Republicans increased property taxes to reduce the debt rather than only cut the budget ? They didn't just increase fees for various things to hide increases revenues?

I wonder, are any of the defenders above talking about Madison's needs and Madison having the lowest taxes comparatively Repubicans, I wonder?

KF, I appreciate that you are consistent in your point of view.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
