Sheriff attacks proposed budget cuts

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis issued the following press release about proposed budget cuts for the Hinds County Sheriff's office by the Board of Supervisors:

Greetings Friends,

As I campaigned for sheriff of Hinds County, I made a promise to you, one that my staff and I have been working diligently to keep. That promise was to be very vigilant in our pursuit to fight crime and to make Hinds County a County where everyone feels safe. We all want Hinds County to be a county where business owners and investors brag about it and encourage others to do business in it.

I want you to know that becoming your sheriff was never about me, but about the citizens of this county and securing a safe future for us to grow and lead the way in being innovative within our great state of Mississippi. When I think about Law Enforcement for our county, I first think about the hard working men and women who sacrifice their lives and time to secure and fight crime but not earning enough to make ends meet. When I think of this county's economy I understand that in order for businesses and investors to feel safe, we must have the corporation of everyone in order for this county to be the great county it can be.

This vision and assignment I have for Hinds County as your Sheriff is under the threat of being cut by 2.5 million dollars. In 2012 with Cyber Crimes, Meth, Marijuana, Domestic Violence, House and Business Burglaries, and Violent crimes in its most advanced stages, our public safety budget has been cut. Without an adequate budget it becomes very difficult for me to fight for you without having a department fully staffed. As it stands now, with the cuts to our budget, I will be forced to lay off good hard working and certified employees, cut very valuable services this department provides for Hinds County and scale back on the success we have had fighting crime.

When I ran for Sheriff, I ran on the slogan that "Together We Can Do Better". I am asking for your support and most importantly your prayers for this county and its future with law enforcement. Together lets stand and fight for the hardworking employees of the Hinds County Sheriff's Department so that we may continue to fight crime. Join us in our efforts to make public safety a top priority.

We need your help in conveying a message to the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. That message is quite simple; it takes all of us working together to make Hinds County, the best county that it can be. Honestly we really do believe that "Together We Can Do Better".

Please find below contact information for the Hinds County Board of Supervisors. We know that you share our thoughts about public safety in this county and we ask that you convey those thoughts to them.

Supervisor Robert Graham, District I

Supervisor Kenneth Stokes, District V-Office

Sincerely,
Tyrone Lewis
Sheriff

Noticed Kenny didn't have email. He would have it if it came with a pizza.

T-bone cut the staff and is paying out MORE in payroll ... and it appears they are too dumb to even figure that one out.

Yep just waiting on Mason to come take over. Lewis is not ready.

You cannot be so blind to see that the BOS is the major problem here. They have some plans for that money to put some name on a building to show how black they are, or something stupid like that. Or there is someone in the works to be paid some rediculous amount of money to do a half complete job. Heard that one before?

Nearly a million bucks a year for Airwave. Something some employees with certifications could do for less than $75,000 per year per employee.

Graham is determined to sink the county over the Airwave contract.

T-bone can easily make up for this shortfall in funds. In fact the sheriff dept is one of the few county agencies that has options...everything illegal they seize from drug busts is theirs...the city of jackson is ripe for the pickings...JPD almost never makes big drug arrests....so go gettem T-bone....you know the big dealers in jackson...its common knowledge among the informed!!!!

1143... its better to be thought a fool than to open you mouth and remove all doubt. They don't get all of seized items. The money is divided up among different agencies. Drug seizures do not equate to money, money seizures can equate but they do not get it all. As far as go and get them, that's great but the whole constitution issue comes up. Obviously you know next to nothing about Law Enforcement or government. The BOS holds the purse strings, plain and simple. Applying for/obtaining grants is an option for extra money. And, depending on the grant, that money may have to be used for specific equipment, etc.

probably needs cooperation more than a corporation

I'm sorry, but watching Jackson and Hinds County self destruct is almost...but not quite...as engaging as Honey Boo Boo.

I think some reality show producer is missing a giant opportunity to document the steps toward financial collapse of a city and county that houses the seat of state government in the nation's poorest state.

@12:11...obviously you are a low level LE with little experience...money and property is only divided if the arrest is in conjunction with a joint task force...even if with a task force cooperation some comes your way...and who said anything about drugs being money...you must be on 3rd shift...go back to sleep...we got it from here little girl

To believe that any department cannot withstand a budget cut is beyond belief. Even something under the heading "law enforcement". In fact, probably particularly including "law enforcement" because those departments (local, state, national it doesn't matter) always scream loudest during tight times and are the last to ever have any cuts in their budgets.

And following Sheriff Mac's years of budget bloating I am sure Tyrone could find some places to cut if he looked. At the same time, other costs (particularly those of gasoline and commodities) have gone up under his President's administration.

What is not being told by Tyrone is that these cuts are not aimed at the positions that we are all concerned about - deputies to patrol the streets; jailers and other folks at the prison in Raymond. The cuts can be made in the "community involvement" type programs. Cut the two baliffs in Judge Tommie's offices and cut out her portal to portal chauffer services. Just because she demands it, don't do it - instead stand up to her while making her drive herself to and from work.

Hinds County .... A World of Difference!

The Sheriff escorts Judge Green to and from the courthouse? As the infamous Kim Wade might say, "Something's gotta be did about this!"

I find it funny that the Sheriff doesn't want to talk about the $2 million in vacant positions he currently has. These are jobs he created in January and still has NOT filled. Things like part time major positions and new positions that were never there. I also find it funny he talks about cyber crime when the department doesn't handle cyber crime, the AG's office has the cyber crime unit. Guess he is running the "scare the sheep into doing what I want" campaign so I can keep extra money for my buddies.

He doesn't want to lose more funds to misappropriate. Now he is trying to use scare tactics on the mindless sheep also known ass his constituents.

This " press release " is an embarrassing example of the chief law enforcement officer in the largest county in this state showing his ignorance of or disdain for the English language. I would be surprised if he composed this personally but would hope that he had someone on staff who could at a minimum use the spell check function. Perhaps the sheriff needs a staffer with an English degree more than one to hold an umbrella over his head while on camera while it is raining. Type on Tyrone!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
