First Consul Tate Reeves issued the following statement.
I don’t typically make news on a Friday afternoon, but today I am going to make an exception:
I’m calling a special session.
During the recently completed regular session, the Legislature discussed drawing new maps to comply with a decision from a federal judge from the Northern District of Mississippi - a decision that has been appealed to the 5th Circuit and the appeal has been heretofore stayed pending future U.S. Supreme Court decisions.
The entire world knows the Callais decision has not yet been handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court. It is a decision that could (and in my view should) forever change the way we draw electoral maps.
It is my belief and federal law requires that the Mississippi Legislature be given the first opportunity to draw these maps. And the fact is, they haven’t had a fair opportunity to do that because of the pending Callais decision.
For those reasons, I am using my constitutional authority to allow the Mississippi Legislature to use their constitutionally recognized right to draw these maps once the new rules of the game are known following Callais.
It is my sincere hope that, in deciding Callais, the U.S. Supreme Court will reaffirm the animating principle that all Americans are created equal and that when the government classifies its citizens on the basis of race, even as a perceived remedy to right a wrong, it engages in the offensive and demeaning assumption that Americans of a particular race, because of their race, think alike and share the same interests and preferences – a concept that is odious to a free people whose institutions are founded upon the doctrine of equality.
The special session will take place on the calendar day that falls 21 days after the U.S. Supreme Court issues the Callais decision.

Bye, bye Bennie
Well said, Mr Sclafani, well said.

“The entire world knows the Callais decision has not yet been handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court.”
Actually, not everyone lives for the next election, like our twisted and distorted political class.
Sounds like an excuse by Tate Reeves to redraw the election map a few months before the next election, and thereby further suck up to Trump.
I'm no Tater fan but this is a good move. For all the caterwauling from Dems over gerrymandering, the GOP is following the Dems lead. Massachusetts is 40% GOP. The last time there was a GOP Congressman from Massachusetts was 1991. If the GOP re-districts Bennie back to Bolton then it is only the GOP using the same tricks the Dems have used for 35 years.
I hope he isn’t waiting for new lines before he fills the two vacancies that have been there far too long.
So if race should not be considered, I'm sure the Delta and Jackson won't be split into 3 or maybe all 4 Congressional districts.
As he should.
My body is ready for Bennie to go bye bye
The worm will turn and people will rue the day
Shouldn’t they wait until the Mississippi case is decided, since it’s already at the 5th Circuit?
7:31, Don’t pretend that the GOP redirecting in Texas, halfway to the next census, isn’t what kicked all this crap off.
for everybody reading into this call, without reading the call - hold on. This has nothing to do with Bennie, it has nothing to do with congressional races. This only affects the District Judge in N Mississippi's ruling on the Supreme Court districts, and her attempt to force two recently elected Justices into a special election in a district she would draw.
Has nothing to do with ByeByeBennie, sucking up to Trump, the MA, VA, or other state's congressional districts.
And, 751, I imagine it would be hard to fill those two vacancies with an appointment when the 'appointee' doesn't know what the future of his/her district would look like.
I thought they were coming back to handle the business of a forthcoming casino on the Pearl River. Did Egbert finally get his way and push that under the rug?
9:41 You are right that the Texas actions started the current flurry. But it took the Texas GOP 34 years to decide to follow the Dems lead in gerrymandering.
Considering that if you serve one day in Congress that you qualify for free healthcare for life, sign me up. I'll be glad to serve and few weeks, get free healthcare and Pelosi style stock tips.
So our lame duck governor only works four days a week?
Section 2 of the VRA prohibits state and local governments from using any voting procedure that “results in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen…to vote on account of race or color.”
If we are all created equal, why are there blacks only disticts?
I think Kenny Griffis is angling for a federal appointment, and issuing opinions to kiss political butts. And Jennifer Branning is wholly unqualified to be a justice.
So I won’t shed a tear to see either of those two leave the bench, if the districts have to be redrawn.
11:11 Great question. It has to do with the intentional efforts of states mostly in the South to disenfranchise black voters. As a graduate of a private school, in Mississippi, I was never taught that. I had to learn it through my own readings of history.
@12:25am - Yep, he was pretty butthurt when Maxwell and Chamberlain were picked over him. Poor Kenny.
Sigh...I hate gerrymandering and that's what actually happens. Sadly, the party in power divides communities with an eye to diluting the other party's voting power. And, worse, independents who don't buy party propaganda never get "representation". Frankly, I suspect more citizens than ever are very fed up with party politics and politicians and would like honorable candidates who do their due diligence on issues! There are no perfect solutions, but a smart person can usually figure what the pluses and minuses realistically are if they bother to do more than what the US vs THEM parties tell them to think. These days, one party is just " knee jerk" against whatever good idea the other party may have grabbed first ! This is where individual liberty goes to die!
A Governor does well to remember that everyone gets to vote for his job despite the " ringers" that get thrown it to guarantee one party rule. Hint: There is a GOP complete majority a state house and senate that always has a Democratic governor who appoints those in his areas of control.
@10:50 PM - Stop spreading the fake news. Source? Dozens on the web. Google it yourself.
The Callais decision will allow California and other blue states to gerrymander where 100% of their seats in Congress are held by Democrats and 100% of local and state offices.
Why should people of a certain color have more power at the voting booth than others? Aren't all of the people voting supposed to be citizens of the same country?
I feel marginalized. Who can I see about this here feeling?
when is our slacker governor going to announce replacements for the two justices who moved to the federal bench? there's a real risk of cases getting decided 4-3 that would have gone 5-4 the other way with a full MSSC bench.
It's official. Louisiana SB8 unconstitutional. The ramifications (narrowness) I haven't figured out yet.
