Governor announced expectant mother killed.
What should have been a night of fun turned deadly as shootings and homicides took place at no fewer than three Homecoming games in Mississippi last night.
Two were killed at Heidelberg's High WDAM reported;
A celebration of high school football ended in gunfire and tragedy Friday night at the Heidelberg High School football field. Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White said two people were shot and killed on the high school’s grounds, and at least one more was wounded. One victim was discovered on the school’s baseball field, while another died in a tailgating area near the bleachers. White said the shooter or shooters remained at large. WDAM story and video.
At least four people were killed in Leland last night. Yahoo News reported:
Four people were killed and at least 12 others were injured in a shooting early Saturday morning in Leland, Mississippi, officials said. Leland Mayor John Lee told CBS News the shooting happened around midnight, and four of the injured people were airlifted to local hospitals. There was no immediate information about their condition. There are no suspects in custody and the investigation is ongoing.Leland High School played Charleston High School last night. There were many visitors as it was Homecoming. 16 people were shot.
A drive-by shooting took place later that night apparently in retaliation.
This video appears to have been shot in Leland last night.
More mayhem took place at South Delta High School in Rolling Fork last night as well as one person was shot. The Sharkey County Sheriff issued the following statement:
The Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department has arrested and charged two individuals in connection with the shooting that occurred outside of the football game at our local school last night. Sheriff Ceaser want to make it absolutely clear that acts of violence in our community will not be tolerated. Our team of law enforcement officers are committed to pursuing justice swiftly and ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors that come to our county. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We ask the community to come together in support and remain positive as the investigation continues. We also send our prayers snd support to our fellow law enforcement agencies in Washington County and to all that were affected by the senseless violent shooting that occured in Leland this morning.
Update: Governor Tate Reeves issued the following statement.
I want to provide an update on the senseless acts of violence that occurred in Mississippi last night.Initial investigations indicate that at Heidelberg High School, two people were killed, including an expectant mother. A suspect has been identified, and was taken into custody by law enforcement officials. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently assisting local and federal law enforcement agencies in investigating. Law enforcement officials will provide updates once they are available. Our state is praying for the victims and their families, as well as the entire Heidelberg and Leland communities. Those responsible will be brought to justice.

Are you not fatigued enough yet?
School Administrators have your school festivities during the school day or SaturDAY including football games! Dangerous snakes slither during the night! These cowards don’t come out until darkness.
Meanwhile, in north Fondren, residents had to put up with the six hour street party hosted by Taste. The city actually gave the restaurant a permit to disturb the peace. Neighbors called police all evening and nothing was done. So it looks like John Horhn does not give a rat's ass about quality of life issues in Jackson.
JJ lists two of the Football related shootings, Heidelberg and Leland. The 3rd was Sharkey County. IMO, the proliferation of handguns stolen from vehicles is such that 1. Certain types of crowds should be avoided and 2. Police need to set up unannounced road blocks to Stop And Search Effectively (SAFE) in locations known for stolen gun packers.
10:12 am
Smart idea.
Using left-wing logic, these shootings would stop if high schools were abolished.
Stating the obvious - yet another reason for school choice. Mercifully my children have all managed to escape the public school system without being shot. There is no way I would send them to any public school in this state.
The majority of the shooters during or after school events do not attend school and want to create havoc on the ones trying to do something good in life!
Police in these small towns know who these fools are and will not do a damn thing to prevent events like this from happening. They just don’t want to get involved. Most are part time officers from other jurisdictions that want to make a few extra bucks and go home safe.
10:12 for the win. It won't stop the shootings, but it will stop them on school grounds. Of course, the NAACP and Southern Poverty Law Center will sue.
Maybe if there were laws that made shooting people illegal.
I had to travel up I-55 and across I-20 last night and it was like drivers had gone crazy, many of them with Louisiana plates.
I guess homecoming football games, coinciding with a JSU home game, the last weekend of the fair, and apparently some big party hosted by Taste in The Fondern, was just too much excitement for people to handle without losing their minds.
Many we should rethink stacking up too many parties in one weekend.
I am in my mid 70’s. I served in the Leland national guard years ago. Leland was one of the nicest, friendliest towns in the delta. I am afraid this is a picture of what “the delta” has become. I tell people going to Greenville, fill up before you get there. I have been scared several times in the city of Greenville while filling up.
The Grapes of Open Carry coming out of storage.
I remember double headers with Ole Miss and Mississippi State playing seperate games in Jackson on the same day. Seemed to be handled well.

Fortunately, the 4th Amendment Protects Me From People Like You...
High School baseball games are played in the afternoons. Track meets generally held in daylight hours. Many (or most) basketball games and tournaments are during the day. Even half the college games are during the daytime beginning as early as 11:00.
Hold all high school games at 1:00 p.m. either on Friday, Saturday or Sunday...Just like soccer games and tournaments. There are lighted fields at all of these locations and events, yet all but football are held during the day.
Last weekend we had family day in the park in Collins Ms which is a yearly event. The event had food trucks and DJ’s. The Event was from 10:00am until 6:00pm! Everyone seemed to have a good time with no incidents!
Key point you cannot have events after the sun sets.
Ron Desantis would not tolerate this shit. Tate needs to do something about the judges in this state. If this doesn’t anger Tate he has to go. I don’t think Andy Gipson would tolerate this shit either. Unreal.
@10:44am, I’m pretty sure that area is in Kenny Stokes Ward, and if you just told him Chuck-way Antard Ladumbass is involved with that joint he would probably see to it that it’s shut down!
Seeing that all three of these shootings took place at schools in small towns, my guess is local resources to secure and protect the campuses were limited. Not that this would have made a difference but do all the schools have an enforced clear bag policy? I know our local school district (which includes one of the largest 7A schools) has a clear bag policy as well as plenty of law enforcement officers on campus during games. Maybe there needs to be a statewide task force consisting of law enforcement and school district administrators to develop a comprehensive plan to prevent something like these shootings from happening again.
Read the post all the way through, lardbutt
2:05 I agree we need a kick ass Governor regarding crime! This shit is ridiculous! Also, these weak Judges.
Just have School events during school hours the trouble makers are at home these hours sleeping, watching videos and listening to music!
Tens of thousands of Homecoming football games and activities going on throughout the country but leave it up to Mississippi, mainly the delta, to make national news for having routine shootings at them.
Looks like safe places to live in Mississippi are few and far between.
Where is the National Guard. Tater doesn’t have it under control.
I can't wait to hear Bennie's reaction.
( But that's if he even says anything).
It's going to take 6 to 8 years before our States' miraculous 4th grade scholars get to high school but things will be better.
A shooting has been reported on the Alcorn State campus.
5:26pm Bennie ain’t got nothing to do with this alone! This is a call for all politicians to act! This shigity is ridiculous! A good Law Enforcement Officer can sense when something’s about to go off if they are moving around and aware!
Just in shooting at Alcorn State University
But schools are a gun free zone !
How could this happen there?
Bennie Thompson is an absolute waiste of oxygen. Nuf said.
The silence from Bennie Thompson is deafening.
Bennie’s been preaching gun control for a long time, where is Wicker and Cindy ? Shad loves to stick himself in everything else. Where is he and the other state wide elected officials .
And the common denominator is….Oh, that mean ole gun, that’s it!
Guns are not the problem. It’s the cretins that need to be removed from society.
Repeat 9:57.
ok 9:27 - when was the last time a gun killed anyone? A gun by itself cannot kill anyone. A human uses a gun to kill people, just as he uses a knife to kill someone. When is Bennie going to preach knife control? Let's get real here.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Washington County coroner’s office identified the six victims killed: Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18; Amos Brantley, 18; and JaMichael Jones, 34.
Sadly, six people murdered.
Changing the game time seems like treating the symptom not the disease.
Radical Islam searching emails for Mississippi wondering if they kick off jihad and forgot to CC them.
I agree wholeheartedly with the esteemed poster. Taste has disrupted this poor neighborhood in fondren with the state crime of disturbing the peace that no city can waive and the police allow rampant crime to occur by taste and its customers and when honest lawabiding citzens complain we are accused of harassment and racism. Remember the mass shooting was here in August and taste had a video recording of it they would not give to the police!!!!!
Am I crazy or is there an obvious “common denominator” in all of these after dark shootings and killings?????
The fatigue is real and growing
Hopefully those responsible will be arrested. Although they didn’t occur. At the event they were all tied to a groups attending events. It will be important to determine if the perpetrators had a connection.
Let's all remember that Bennie had a staff member who complained that the shooter of Trump had not practiced for accuracy. The same for our illustrious FBI.
Just another weekend in this utopia of a red state.
The Blue City fatigue is so real here in Mississippi.
You may be onto something here. Maybe we should make drugs illegal also. Tomorrow is a new day. Let's make it work.
