The investigation into whether former Richland Mayor Pat Sullivan and Pearl Police Chief Dean Scott stole "time" might be turning into a prosecution. WLBT reported last night:
Allegations of time theft 3 On Your Side first uncovered last year involving a former Pearl police chief and Richland mayor, which state agents in the auditor’s agents subsequently investigated, now rests in the hands of Mississippi’s attorney general for prosecution. Agents from the Office of State Auditor presented the case files Friday to the Madison Rankin District Attorney’s Office, but they were handed off and signed by the AG’s office, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Ashley Allen. “We did not receive either file for prosecution,” Allen said.... Timesheet records show Scott claimed to work for the Rankin County Tax Assessor’s office while he was on the coast for conferences related to his police job. County records showed Sullivan took thousands of hours of leave he didn’t actually earn, costing taxpayers in excess of $85,000 over four years. Rest of article.
Stay tuned.

Tip of the iceberg.
The office of Wanda Fitch, where cases go to die.
Not Bubba and Shad trying to ruin Lynn's moment of basking in Blue glory with the Fox settlement (the one case where Lynn's strategy of not doing the work of an attorney general actually worked to her advantage).
I hope no one reading this article thinks this isn’t going on all over the state. Especially on the city and county levels. The state auditor should out source this investigation and pay them based on a portion of money recovered.
Ole Shad not touching this with a press release or serious investigating- it would cause Shad to go after his base!
Shad probably knows not to mess with the whales and icebergs.
They can land on top of you.
Small fry, not so much.
We all know when files go to the AG's office, the files go there to die.
You legal scholars do understand this simply means Shad can't just arrest everyone, right?
This just means he completed an investigation and took the case to the local DA, whose office conflicted out of the case (just like they did with a certain former tax assessor).
Let's see if Lynn actually indicts these boys.
It's Mississippi, where cheating by public employees is a requirement of the job.
"But everybody is doing it."
This is the same sly move Guest pulled a few years back instead of dropping the hammer on Bryan Bailey. The case file will now be used to level up a desk until the statute of limitations runs out.
Shouldn’t this also be brought against the person who approved the pay?
@ 1:51 - You do realize that both Shad and Lynn will run for the big office in three years, right?
The AG will use the grand jury as cover by saying that the grand jury didn’t return an indictment, which we all know will be BS since as we have been told over and over that a prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich if they want to. Both men are obviously guilty but will not be prosecuted because they are part of the Rankin County mafia that continues to steal from the Rankin County coffers.
For all of you who want better individuals in public office, remember this when the AG ask for your vote. Also, remember the many instances where Shad was more than willing to issue press releases regarding the arrest and demand for repayment of public funds related to some low level clerks. But in this case, no press release, no demand letter, not a peep. So when Shad ask for your vote say NO, we demand someone who has the guts to stand up to the powerful political types who are abusing the public trust.
just a reminder that both of these guys ran as “tough in crime” conservative christian MSGOP republicans, while they were stealing from the tax payers
If people were fired for falsifying time sheets, then the same rule applies to the Chief and Sheriff or anyone in position of authority. My guess is the Bd of Supervisors or City Council approved without documentation. What admin assistant entered this info for reimbursement into a computer? Checks aren’t just spit out and receipts must be submitted. Even person who entered false data is liable!
Someone should follow AG cases. I am an ADA in a large district. I have been in the same courtroom for 3 years. I have yet to see a case go to trial. Usually reduced to misdemeanor’s. When racking and stacking trial dockets, we mark all AG cases as “not going” and prep the cases behind it so we don’t get caught unprepared.
@ 8:31 does Fitch even have anyone with any actual trial experience on staff? Or all they just press release specialists?
Exactly why is the District Attorney's office "conflicted" out of pursuing these cases? Mike Moore didn't see a conflict when he prosecuted county officials in Jackson County.
Anyone think Sean Tindell will put the newly alleged CCID guy on paid suspension for the 3 years that Lynn will investigate this case?
Your AG simply cannot be bothered with the duties of the office. Not only can she not be bothered, she really doesn’t know what they are despite having been a special assistant attorney general many moons ago. I think we can all agree that the only way to correct this problem is to elect her governor so that we can get a person elected AG who actually wants to do even just the basic duties the AG has. Vote Fitch for governor.
How is she going to fit this into her busy calendar filled with China law suits?
WLBT:CASE
When I first saw this headline, I thought about Bert. God rest his soul.
WLBT was always a good channel when Bert was there. I sometimes think the news team there do not go after stories of possible corruption. In other words, our local news channels do not seem to put forth much of an effort.
If I did not read this site, I may not have much of an idea what all is going on in and around Jackson.
3:29…speaking of then DA Michael Guest refusing to indict Bryan Bailey, because they were friends, interesting that Guest now sits on an ethics committee. How ridiculous is that?
Do elected positions have a hours per week requirement?
8:31 - one would think that an ADA would know English.
8:40
Good point, where you saw one you saw the other! Always thought Guest should have bucked up and spoke out, wishful thinking.
Rankin County, hopefully has just a few more county officials to clear out before we can rebuild! Can't wait.
Mrs. Eastover,
Your comment doesn't make sense. You talk about the news station not doing stories about corruption in a comment ON A STORY THE NEWS STATION DID ABOUT CORRUPTION, a story that wouldn't have been out there otherwise.
That's why you read it here.
Such a stupid case. Everyone at work has free time on their hands. I’d rather see more people doing double loads like this to get more done.
We need to see what got accomplished with the 2 jobs. That’s really all that matters.
