City Releases Report on Thalia Mara Hall

The city of Jackson issued the following statement.

Earlier this month, the City of Jackson was forced to shut down Thalia Mara Hall after early microbial activity was found. We quickly alerted the public and the media of this development when the information was made available to us. City officials then immediately worked to hire a contractor to analyze the environment, provide a summation and propose options for remediation.
In the interest of transparency, the City of Jackson is releasing the “Indoor Air Quality Assessment” report. The report, reviewed by a senior industrial hygienist, outlines the findings from the company the city contracted with, CTEH – Environmental and Scientific Consulting Services.  The report recommends the repair of the HVAC system and the removal of some carpeting. It also recommends the cleaning of carpets, hard surfaces, floors and soft upholstery. A final air quality clearance survey is also requested. Today, the remediation team will meet with city officials for the third time.

The city remains committed to restoring Thalia and has put great effort in securing funding for those means.  We were recently given $1.5 million in needed funding by the state to help do this. But this is an ongoing effort. In the meantime, major events at Thalia have been moved to a separate venue, the Mississippi Coliseum.  This has preserved the ability of patrons to attend these shows as well as the economic impact to the city.
Most important, though, is the health and safety of our community. We will reopen Thalia when these concerns are alleviated. We do not currently have a timeframe for repairs, but will advise the public when we do. The city thanks the public for its patience and understanding during this temporary hiatus.

Kingfish note: I am reading through the report right now and will post relevant excerpts below.

"The total indoor spore levels were above the outdoor levels in five cases and Penicillium/Aspergillus exceeded outdoor levels in all cases. Elevated concentrations of Penicillium/Aspergillus were reported in Main auditorium sample sites #2 & #5, basement floor storage room, and ground floor sample location #11. Sample #11 was collected in the west room across from refreshment station and couch seating. This floor, especially this room, exhibited strong fungal odors. Many of the return-air grates contained a visible presence of dust, debris and suspect mold growth. There was significant multi species biofouling of wood surfaces on this floor. The wood surfaces of doors, furniture, and synthetic baseboards being the most heavily affected. The main auditorium hall presented significant fungal biofouling in carpeting, surface contamination of wood armrests and handrails, and exceedances in spore trap samples #2 and #5. A five- point sampling strategy was employed in this environment because of cubic volume and stratification concerns. The sampling methodology should have captured the most unbiased fungal data in terms of randomness and proximities to visual fungal biofilms. Surface contamination of carpet and hard surfaces on second floor balcony was visibly less than first floor locations. This is supported by the laboratory analyses. The soft surfaces of seats and curtain upholstery were closely examined, and no visible growth was determined. Because of the spore load in these locations, it is likely that spores are present on these soft surfaces but environment and labile carbon restrictions are preventing primary hyphae tube growth and colony formation. "

Proposed as hypothesis is the atmospheric rain events coupled with indoor condensation from lack of climate control and temperature/nutrient sources being optimal on surfaces facilitated the primary proliferation event.

Can anyone running this flop city tell anyone what all those words mean?

"All this is indicitave of a catastrophic loss of HVAC functionalities leading to atmospheric disruption conducive to fungal establishment and propagation." (Page 6)

More simple words- HVAC not working correctly turned Thalia Mara into a composting experiment.

It's just a perception of mold.

Fake news. I was told there was no mold!

Beavis: Ahhh ... huh huh ... huh ... hey Butt-Head, some chick named Thelma has exhibited strong fungal odors ... huh huh,

But-head: Shut up Beavis. You left a multi species biofouling in the restroom at McDonalds yesterday.

The presence of the Penicillium/Aspergillus in the main auditorium room may be attributed to the age of the carpeting and a lack of adequate carpet cleaning...
The presence of Cladosporium in indoor environments is not unusual and may be associated with accumulated dust and poor housekeeping on certain flat surfaces.
Cue Gomer... 🎶 Surprise Surprise Surprise 🎶

Guessing they thought it would clean itself.

Get the bulldozer on standby because this will end like that Library that was on Northside drive.

In an effort to cut costs by turning off the A/C, COJ has incurred a probably 6 digit bill for cleaning and repair. If not more.

What a shame. My parents used to take us to see Broadway plays when TMH was new. I remember seeing "Two By Two" and "Carousel" there, among many others. Good memories.

Has it occurred to anyone at City Hall that they should hire someone to rassess and repair the HVAC?

The state did give them money for a new HVAC, but doing nothing in the interim might not be a smart move.

Unless they don't care what happens to Thalia Mara.

It's difficult to take seriously the content of a report on which the the name of the venue is spelled incorrectly on the title page!

When BabyChok finally trots up to DC, to take whatever powerful position he's been promised, I'm imagining that he will be credited with RESOLVING all the "crises" he's allowed to (or CAUSED TO) happen.

I saw the live action ninja turtles and live action mortal kombat there as a kid in the early 90s. That’s the only time I ever went. It smelled bad back then too.

@5:10 PM they didn’t turn off the AC to cut cost. The neglected to Mai rain the HVAC system until it failed. And then when it failed they were too lazy/stupid and/corrupt to get it fixed.

I guess it depends upon what your definition of "Nobody was asleep at the wheel" is...

“This isn’t something that has been growing. The weekend before the growth was noticed, there was a malfunction of the HVAC, which led to an environment that could produce that growth,” Lumumba said. “The AC has not been functioning at full capacity for some time. Nobody was asleep at the wheel. Unfortunately, a week ago, there was an additional malfunction.”

Nobody was asleep at the wheel: "The oil level on the dipstick was not visible for several months, unfortunately, a week ago, there was a loud banging noise and an additional malfunction."

I'm telling you... this will kill all mold, bacteria and viruses! arcusmanufacturing.com. Proven technology but little ChOCK will spend millions of our tax dollars on contracts for his clan that will never work!

OOPS!!!

"Williams told the city council last week that the HVAC units at the facility on East Pascagoula Street have been operating at about 25 percent capacity for the last decade."

Mayor Cheap Fake talking out of his ass again.

It means they failed to take care of the place and it went to pot.

The never ending process of securing funding is all I needed to see. They’re gonna take money and give it to their handpicked contractors and repeat until whichever one has a dozer that runs, gets the last slurp. These people do not have the mental capacity to learn how to maintain ANYTHING.

This is an old building that hasn't be maintained as well as it might have been or updated. Politicians don't want to fund "invisible" repairs. They "patch, patch, patch" until the damage is too bad to ignore.

Things the “city” has run into the ground:
Water/sewer
Eudora Weldy Library
“International” Airport
Thalia Mara Hall
Police department
City streets
Convention Center
When will the fine people in Jackson see the leadership as they truly are ? Self serving, power hungry, money grabbing mobsters. They only take care of their own. And I don’t mean the black community.

Statement from Chowke: "It's only a perception of black mold, fungus, bacteria, and an incompetent and corrupt city administration. Right?"

Anonymous said...

No, he's touring the Bacardi distillery today.

Well, at least they didn’t try to save money by stopping chemical injections into the water system to bind the lead to the pipes. Just sayin’

I have a relative (RIP) who worked for the company responsible for maintenance of the HVAC system at TMH, some 15-20 years ago. The system was 15-20 years newer back then, but they did an excellent job keeping it going like it was designed. The city let them go in favor of a cheaper contractor, who was cheaper because they did not keep the system up to design standards. This problem only got worse over the years as the HVAC components got older and older with improper maintenance. There are many HVAC systems around the city that are much older and still work perfectly. The difference? they have maintained properly. Another problem is carpeting. With poor maintenance, it becomes a breeding ground for mold/fungal contamination. Once in place, the spores are there and ready for a fungal bloom when conditions (Moisture level) change to a point to support growth in the dirty carpet. At TMH, this happened when the HVAC system was allowed to deteriorate to the point where moisture control failed to the point where the carpet was wet enough to support mold/fungal growth. Lesson here? If you don't maintain things to the design standards, only bad things will happen - never good things. Bringing them back to design standards will always cost more than maintaining them would have cost. Be careful TMH. These repairs most likely will be done cheaply and not back to design standards. The clock to failure will immediately start ticking again.

Again, these people shouldn't be running a cash only lemonade stand, let alone a City.

@10am, thanks for the inside info. I had speculated as much. However, I would surmise failure is part of the plan. So they can get more money to "fix". Rinse and repeat. Until it's past the point of "fixing", wherein it'll be slated for demolition. Everything in Jackson is like the book, "Things Fall Apart".

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
