D.L. Gardner: Evangelicals Labeled the Cult of Trump

Politics, cultural and social issues, and evangelicalism are the things that make life interesting. Back in the day mixing politics and religion was strictly forbidden. These days most folks still avoid talking about religion unless they talk about evangelicals. As you may have heard recently, evangelicals and conservatives are just plain weird.

Those of a certain age will remember the Moral Majority, a political movement and organization that attracted large numbers of conservative Christians to vote for Republican candidates. The movement, founded by Jerry Falwell, Sr. in 1979, established the religious right as a political force. The organization disbanded ten years later.

Evangelicals and the Moral Majority are two different entities. The Moral Majority supported the Republican Party. Evangelicals largely support Republicans but many evangelicals support candidates from other parties in local races.

Evangelicals are participating as much as usual in 2024 national elections, perhaps a bit more now that former president Trump has selected J.D. Vance as his running mate and Vice President Kamala Harris is now heading the Democratic ticket for president.

That evangelicals largely support the Trump/Vance ticket is a boondoggle for political critics on the left. Those on the left leave no ad hominem attack unturned when speaking about Donald Trump. In their eyes Trump is the lowest of the lowest scum on earth.

Why, they wonder, would any Christian support such a bad, bad man? That question has led many of them to believe in a Cult of Trump! Surely Trump’s evangelical supporters must have been brainwashed into worshipping him!

I know of no evangelical who worships Donald Trump. In fact, many evangelicals really don’t like how he expresses himself. But all of his evangelical supporters like his conservative policies. It’s not a religious thing. It’s a conservative governance thing more in line with our Founding Fathers’ than the left’s tilt toward atheistic Marxism.

For example the vast majority of evangelicals do not support the LGBTQ+ movement. At this year’s National Religious Broadcasters convention Mr. Trump said, “We will protect Christians in our schools and in our military and our government.” He continued, “We will protect God in our public square.” And, “I will protect the content that is pro-God.”

His biggest applause lines were his pledge to form a federal task force to fight “persecution against Christians in America” and “the toxic poison of gender ideology” adding “God created two genders, male and female.”

J.D. Vance joined Trump as his VP pick a couple of weeks ago and has already generated a good bit of negative press from the left. Ross Douthat, New York Times opinion columnist, opined about Vance last Sunday saying, “Clearly Vance is likely to be a figure of special hatred for liberals for the next three months, if not the next four years, but I’m not sure we have the kind of culture anymore where a single narrative or ‘reputational’ attack can become dominant outside of partisan bubbles.”

Needless to say, all evangelicals do not support Trump for president. In fact, some evangelicals are Trump-haters. As far as I know there are no Biden or Harris haters though Trump himself may have used certain language and criticisms of his rivals that would have been better left unsaid. It’s sad to see Americans divided so radically over politics.

Thank yourself as one who rationalizes the hate and blinds himself to the evil.

We have all been raised to hate evil. The media gods who are omnipresent both left and right make their livlihoods casting their opposites as not only wrong, but evil. Hence the sheep on both sides hate the "evil" of the other side. It's quite predictable.

Per 11:02. Well stated 👌🏽

DL you're either incredibly naive and gullible or incredibly disingenuous. Thanks for nothing.

I’m not an evangelical and I’m in no cult. But I know a man cannot have a baby. I know that only citizens of the USA should vote. I know that leaving expensive and high level equipment in Afghanistan only enhanced our enemies’ armed forces. None of those things happened when President Trump was president. Also, I know I’m not blind to how biased the media is. Thanks for trying to force one sided views down our throats. Most of us are too smart to fall for that.

From the country's founding until only about 60 years ago, very few individuals hated "evangelicals" or any garden variety Christians. The deliberately engineered dilution of America through "multiculturalism" is reaching its apex, and yes - white Christians will become extinct unless they learn to hate back their enemies like their ancestors did.

If you go to the AmwayGlobal website, you can read their statement that Amway is not a pyramid scheme.

Just because you say it, does not make it so.

Very well-reasoned critique of the left. Since they can't make any meaningful criticisms of the article, 11:02 AM, 11:39 AM and 1:50 PM attack Gardner's character, a man they have never met and whose only sin is criticizing their political tribe. And, they expect us to ignore that their comments are pure unadulterated hate they spit towards everyone who is not useful to their political aims. Not a single critique of Gardner's argument.

Every Saturday afternoon, or Sunday morning, I come to this website to see what Kingfish has for us to dig into. Usually, he will have an article posted by Mr. Gardner.

Without fail, some pointy headed liberal will trash the article. They will accuse the writer of disseminating hate, racism, dog whistles, all manner of things that I didn't see in the same article they read. I just don't see it.

So, in defense of Mr. Gardner, I will say this, Mr. Gardner is responsible for what he writes, no doubt about it, he is responsible for what he writes.

Mr. Gardner, is not responsible for how you may interpret that which he writes. The problem isn't what's being written, the problem is the interpretation of what is written.

2:27 and 4:48 use reason which is seldom welcomed by the left. Ad hominem is more to their preference.

lol @cholly the same stable genius who thinks a Foxconn factory is a chinese slave labor camp.

Anonymous said...

evangelicals are weirdos but its not because of Trump. it is because of the nonsense like speaking tongues and their ignorant takes on every subject because most of them lack education and suffer extreme Dunning-Kruger syndrome.

Anonymous said...

@7:51 Stop it! @cholly has actually spoken with the former slaves who made your iPhone. Have you?

It's very simple. I absolutely think evangelicals have every right to their religious beliefs. They do not however get to impose them on the rest of the population. They can try to raise their children in their faith and beliefs through love and teaching. They can supervised and protect their children.
The notion that those who do not share their faith and political views are Marxists is ridiculous and insulting. We see that one religion controlling government has resulted in oppression throughout history and offer all Iran as the perfect example of what happens when ,even in a country with vicious, greedy leadership, the dominance of clergy quickly becomes far MORE vicious. We all know too that the absence the moral and legal imperative that it's the right of any human to make his or her own personal decisions as long as he or she doesn't harm others is the only thing that guarantees freedom.
Not all of depend on a preacher or politician or the town crier to tell us what to think. The ultimate freedom is the ability to decide for yourself and your children until those children ( as long as you don't abuse or neglect them) are 18.
We can also worship God and determine the fate of our own soul without the help of celebrity preachers who have enriched themselves. And, we think it's remarkable for a man or woman of God to follow anyone who has been unrepentant sinner and scammer (see Trump University case) and who brags that Putin and Jong Un and Xi and now even the Taliban " love" him. These are men incapable of love but clearly capable of cruelty.
So DL should explain THAT. And, while he's at explain try to learn finance and economics so he'll know that Federal Reserve determines the value of money worldwide and part of an international reserve system BECAUSE the DOLLAR determines the value of all other money. And you can bet on the fact that every dictator and every billionaire would LOVE going back to the gold standard .Until Trump or DL demonstrate that they have a clue about how to lead a country or preserve my right to make my own decisions, I will continue to find them dangerous. And, yeah Trump like Biden is too damn old. JD is too damaged by his childhood and changes with the wind in his desperation for love and approval. I don't think Harris or Walz are great choices, but the GOP has become so chaotic, and weird that I have no choice. Won't matter in MS how I vote . Indeed, the GOP here doesn't want us to have a say in anything with a vote. Just like with marijuana , they wouldn't bring up abortion for a vote. State's rights is no rights when a minority can impose their will on the majority on any issue. Our legislature doesn't have the balls to give us a vote on any issue as it dilutes their power.

"They do not however get to impose them on the rest of the population." Well, "Thou shalt not murder" is part of the Ten Commandments. I wouldn't want to impose that belief on the rest of society. Nope.

What a weird opinion.

Anonymous said...

You have confused the evangelicals with the Pentecostals, and you call others ignorant?

Anonymous said...

@11:59 There are different sub-cultures of all sects of every religion. Same goes with Jews and Muslims. Not every evangelical is Pentecostal but all Pentecostals are evangelical. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicalism. As a transdenominational coalition, evangelicals can be found in nearly every Protestant denomination and tradition, particularly within the Reformed (Continental Reformed, Anglicanism, Presbyterian, Congregational), Plymouth Brethren, Baptist, Methodist (Wesleyan–Arminian), Lutheran, Moravian, Free Church, Mennonite, Quaker, Pentecostal/charismatic and non-denominational churches

"Still, most factories dedicated to assembling the iPhone remain in China. The largest one, operated by manufacturing partner Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), is located in Zhengzhou and employs over 300,000 workers."

Like a good liberal, you enjoy lies to make your point. I never said " Foxconn factory is a chinese slave labor camp." I did say many iPhones are assembled in China. Yes, I do believe totalitarian Marxist regimes enslave people. You neo-Marxists love to lie.

Very weird and a bit incoherent.

4:48 and 6:44 both stated what I've wondered all along about people who hate this man's columns. Thanks for that.

@cholly: it is you who are the liar. Here is exactly what you said copied from your comment Reminds me of how the woke folk caturwhawl about how terrible things are in the US while applauding Apple for using Chinese slave labor for the iphones. Two lies here. First is that “woke folk” as you call them, applaud Apple for using slave labor. Second

@cholly: the lies you told are actually worse than the lie you are telling now (about what you said) Reminds me of how the woke folk caturwhawl about how terrible things are in the US while applauding Apple for using Chinese slave labor for the iphones.

Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. There are many doctrinal differences between oneness Pentecostals and evangelicals.

Both will say they have nothing to do with each other. I suggest you should study sound literature when it comes to knowing the differences, and Wikipedia is not sound literature.

@6:56 PM there are 356 referenced citations in that wiki. You need to at least try to provide your own citation to discredit at least one point made. See, this is what I was taking about. A complete lack of education and willful ignorance. You people don’t even understand your own religious beliefs or how to do basic research. In Wikipedia the citation and reference list is at the bottom of the page.

Come on KF (9:42), that’s a fifth grade argument. It also says not to commit adultery! And to praise the one god! Smarten up.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you now agree with cholly. That is, unless you think the the Peoples Republic of China is the land of the free.

Anonymous said...

Try citing Wikipedia in an academic setting and see how well that works for you.

KF, murder is against the LAW. Even back then, when there was no science to better human condition, burning witches at the stake wasn't a murder. Beheading adulterous wives wasn't against the law. Please don't pretend that religion hasn't been interpreted to justify oppression in societies throughout history. Religion is the creation of man, Jesus was a teacher of how to live to be pleasing in the eyes of God and warned of " false prophets". Jesus didn't ask for money to support himself or his followers, he washed feet and embraced the poorest in his society. He didn't ride fine horses or have his own chariot!

@8:03 once again. The sources and citations are listed. look you can be pedantic and wrong. Either way you are wrong.

Anonymous said...

Why does this blog attract the dumbest of smoothbrains?

Anonymous said...

@8:01 Slaves don’t get paid. Foxconn workers get paid. Cholly very specifically said iPhones are made by slave labor and then stated that claim is celebrated by cholly’s perceived political opponents. I pointed out that iPhones aren’t made in slave labor camps, unlike the cheap items sold at places like Harbor Freight, Dollar Tree, etc. These gulags are well documented. But they don’t make iPhones there. Also, Foxconn is building a factory in the USA. That was celebrated because the announcement was during the period between 2016-2020.

" Either way you are wrong."

That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. My opinion, which is as valuable as yours, says you're wrong.

You're just like every other hairless ape, with a keyboard, that thinks they can google a subject, and it makes them an expert. You know nothing about spiritual living.

You have an inflated opinion of yourself, and place too much faith in your academic learning. That makes you proud, arrogant, a false feeling of superiority. It takes humility to learn spiritual concepts.

Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. So, you are saying you have no source.

That may be one of Daniel’s most thought revoking ramblings yet.

“ It’s sad to see Americans divided so radically over politics.”

You can start to address this issue by taking a look in the mirror. This clown of a writer is the last person on earth who should unironically print that statement. This level of hypocrisy is something we just didn’t used to see, but idiots with no shame have left that decency far behind.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
