Straight from the Hood

Our Yankee blogger, Peter Santenello, wrapped up his fact-finding tour of the Mississippi Delta and moved on to where else but...... Jackson.  Thankfully, he didn't try to do a shock video but engaged a Jacksonian, Dr. Tommie Mabry, who provided some thoughtful commentary as they toured the Bold New City.  Check it out.

"There are successes everywhere that we do not celebrate enough." A lot of truth in that.

I watched the entire thing and it was well worth it. Thanks for posting this. Excellent insights…

Finally, a couple of guys not pandering to the lowest common denominator or trying to monetize race.

Thanks for sharing, great watch.

EXCUSES - the lies you tell yourself to make yourself feel better about justifying your lack of responsibility for your own life and the life of your family.

Anonymous said...

Everyone in the Sip is in survival mode. Some of us go to work, others use it as an excuse to commit crime to get by. Pathetic.

Unlike the clarion ledger article a yr or so ago that made a headline about Northside drive being full of high end multi million dollar houses and then 8 miles the same road has public school kids and hud houses. They made it all about race and smeared the families that have kids enrolled at prep or JA and shamed them for living in high income houses on Northside drive while others were poor. It was only talking skin color of course.

That's one in a row.

Nope, Buddy...it does NOT take a village and raising your kid (when he's out of your eyesight) is NOT the responsibility of the village.

But, yes, it would be nice if community leaders would use bullhorns to inundate the streets with expectations and consequences instead of blaming all ills on society, poverty and white people.

No doubt a great success story. He lives in Madison the City and owns an additional 3+ acre parcel yet to be built on, also in Madison. More black flight?

Anonymous said...

Give that dude some cheese to go with his whine.

Anonymous said...

What about the Mayor, city county admin, elected officials responsibility to them.

Anonymous said...

I lost count of how many times he said it takes a village or the community to raise kids. I didn't hear him say even once that it also takes a working father in the home to raise children right.

I watched a few minutes and saw it was just another man trying to blame everything on other people. Why do grown men who have not even finished twelve years of schooling blame other people for them not having a high paying job? What made them quit school? What stops them from getting some training? If you fail to prepare yourself for the future it is on you. I didn't stop you from getting an education or training. I had nothing to do with your decision to commit crimes.

Toogaloo "almost Ivy Leage" Did he say that with a straight face?

Anonymous said...

8:32, I presume you are one of the commenters who like to talk about what a great city Jackson used to be.

When you were growing up, if one of the kids in your neighborhood was acting up, would a grown-up correct them? I didn't grow up in Jackson, but I was grounded more than once based on reports from grown-ups to my mom when I was a kid.

That's all he was saying with the whole village thing, I think.

Now, if the Vice Lords are raising your kids for you, all bets are off. No one can correct those kids except the criminal justice system, except maybe someone like the guy in the video.

But but we're getting a Top Golf!

Anonymous said...

Who in their right mind aspires to be “Ivy League” any more???

Anonymous said...

Tougaloo is far from the only MS school to have delusions of grandeur.

From the Ole Miss Campus Culture and Traditions:

"In 1893, the university’s first football team chose the Crimson of Harvard and the Navy Blue of Yale for its team colors. The team felt that the colors went well together, and that the spirit of Harvard and Yale would be good to mimic."

Ole Miss might be Harvard, if Harvard were just a puke covered 175 year old dive bar.

It's ironic that he lives a couple of blocks from me in...wait for it...Madison the City. Good plan.

@ 12:19 - When I 'was growing up', I'm not sure. But when I was a young parent in a two-parent household with both of us working and struggling, I didn't mind if somebody I knew called to advise me of a problem my child had caused.

But, it was never his responsibility or that of the neighborhood to kick in and raise my children. THAT theory is nothing more than scapegoating and the reflex reply of a certain culture here who will never accept responsibility and get their house in order. I know this. You know this. Kingfish knows this. WTF is the hesitance to engage and make a difference.

We are living in a society that has done away with correction, or discipline. The last vestige of discipline is the Department of Corrections, and there are forces trying to cancel that, also.

I taught my children what I learned. Discipline can be a good thing, or not. If a person is disciplined from an outside source, chances are very good the person will resent the discipline, and rebel, doing the opposite of instruction.

Don't read this, and say not me. Yes, you, too. No one feels good when the higher ups come around calling names, and pointing fingers, no matter how nice they are about it. Humility is very rare, and no, that doesn't best describe you.

On the other hand, the triumph of self-control, or self-discipline, is a character builder. To master yourself brings joy, and a feeling of success, which of course it is. For the human species is the most unruly species on the planet.

@11:35 Actually Tougaloo is Brown University’s sister school and your credits from there are accepted at Brown. So, yes it was said with a straight face. My late classmate actually ran Harvards ER. Honestly there are many international professionals whose academic career began at Tougaloo before matriculating to the Ivy’s., I guess Mississippi is still stuck in the sixties when Billy Noble stated “ Them _______ at Tougaloo have lost their minds

I noticed that they were walking through the Midtown area. I wish they had gone and visited Scott Fortenberry at Soul City Church on Whitfield Street, who has helped clean up that whole area tremendously. He is a white pastor from Clinton who has done more good for that area than any politician or local pastor from Jackson. He also recently reopened that pool for local kids to swim in the summer.

@4:18
When I was in college I worked for a copier company in Jackson. I delivered copiers and paper and such all around Jackson. We delivered a high end very expensive copier to Tugaloo to "try out". This was common and the copiers would get about 1000 cpoies made (the usable life of the copier back then was around 200,000 copies so 1000 was like test driving a car and putting 30 miles on it. We would drop off the copiers and leve 1000 sheets of paper. Most business never ask to have them picked up and signed contracts. We delivered one to Tugaloo and they asked to keep it about a week since it was summer and they were slow. The salesman agreed. They called a week later and said come get it thy did not like how it operated. Me and the other delivery guy went and got it the next day and brought it back to the office. The copy meter on it was at around 120k copies. We found out they had another company provide them toner and paper that week. They used it for all of the back to school stuff. The machine that was worth around 14k was better than half worn out. Nothing was said. the next year the same thing happened and the salesman refused to bring it out. He called called a racist and threatened with a lawsuit.
Thats Ivy Leage for sure.

@4:18, I have heard that there checks and balances will have vendors and contractors pushed to the limit. But, in the words of a former president “ Someone else handles that” ……lol

6:10 pm

Your prejudice is baked into your comment.

You also do not understand grammar.

You fall into a category of white people who are going to hate on black institutions no matter what.

Stop what you are doing, look in the mirror, and realize you have been and are part of the root cause of problems in Mississippi.

Just quit now….do us all a favor.

Don’t feel the need to announce it. We can tell by your ignorance that your gnat-like attention span allowed you to only watch a few minutes of the video. The man on the video, Dr. Tommie Mabry, did not go on to blame the world’s problems on others. He is educated well beyond the 12th grade, holding both a Masters and PhD degree. He now travels the world as a hired speaker and has written 4 children’s books. He went on to say a lot of things that I would be willing to bet you’d agree with — it would just require you to pull your head out of your ass.

Interesting that you attack the messenger while failing to address the culture of fraud committed by the university.

I will give 6:10 a,lifeline, he stated they didn’t use contracts. This means that they didn’t realize that the customer could put you on a net 30/60/ or 90 invoices cycle. So basically you all were just giving away an expensive product. There was no recourse. So you can’t deem an entire establishment correct or unethical when they have rules and procedures in place.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
