Brett Favre and State Auditor Shad White are having a bit of a go at it on social media:
Shad WhiteFollowThese are lies. I am not going to hide how much you were paid, why you were paid, or conduct back room meetings to make this go away. The contract that justified the payment of $1.1 million in welfare money to you said you were to “speak at three (3) total speaking engagements,” “provide one (1) radio spot during the contract period,” and “provide one (1) keynote speaking engagement.” The CPA for Favre Enterprises confirmed this was your contract. You did not give the speeches. You have acknowledged this in statements to my agents. To suggest my office has not met with you is a lie as well. You have met with agents who work for me. They showed you the contract. They showed you the emails confirming the contract quoted above is how you were paid. To suggest I have only communicated this to you via the media is wrong. I’m doing my job—that’s it. You can continue to use your megaphone as a celebrity to drown out the facts, but it will not change the facts.
Mr. Favre repaid the $1.1 million of TANF funds but Mr. White says he owes $228,000 in interest.

To paraphrase Uncle William, "The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks"
Brett Favre is not a good role model.
He is yet another reminder that it is very bad for society to elevate sportball players to such high social status.
Same goes for actors. Really no mortals should be so revered.
"As I have said before, I would never accept money for no-show appearances"
Yet he did, and he didn't go over the top trying to return it as soon as the news broke. I am with Shad on this one, he is trying to make it go away. He should have returned 100% of it months ago upon finding out and at that time made a public apology. Not months later after having his hand forced to give the other half back.
In simple terms, Brett has likely let his agent, accountant and lawyers handle 99 % of this whole thing ! He knows he did commercials for something in last few years and is just now realizing he's been made a fool. I would guess that his AGENT will be terminated in short order. Anyone who thinks Brett Farve handles his day to day bookings and money exchanges is an idiot.
It’s likely Mr. Farve has CTE and can’t remember what he did last week, much less a couple of years ago.
Who would have believed a former NFL quarterback would have less of an ego than our State Auditor?
Shadrach ain't intimidated by ole Brett. Good for him.
Favre cannot read. How is he supposed to know what the contract said?
Highly doubt the state receives that rate on its short term cash held.
Brett meets Water(Toter4Tater)Boy. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! Whammo.
Shad is a publicity whore who has a clear track record of trying his cases in the court of public opinion. He’s skews “the facts” to his benefit and for social media fodder. He’s a politician, that’s all. Isn’t there a gag order in place on this thing? The rules don’t seem to apply to the State Auditor. Good for Brett….I’m glad he’s pushing back. It’s well past time for others to do the same.
If Shad/AG sued, he wouldn't get int b/c pmt is disputed and unliquidated. He's overreaching
Anyone else paid up yet?
Shad needs to go after the Swamp next. Shad for Senate 2024!
Somebody gotta hustle some money for the state. Lynn sure ain’t doing it..
$1.1 million for 5 speaking engagements/radio spots is $220,000 per talk. If he actually did them does that seem reasonable? $220,000 per event?
Fitch won't prosecute.
Maybe AG Fitch will lean on him to cough up the rest....
Sad to see Shad take the bait and get into a social media battle. He sounds like a little boy saying liar liar pants on fire. If Shad is right, it will become clear in the end. Elected officials don't need to be be sucked into twitter wars. It was Trump's biggest flaw. Too much ego.
Check the comments on the original facebook post. Almost entirely support Favre.
His character speaks for itself. Hush money paid to massage therapists in Minnesota ring a bell?
Brett better wise up and pay up the penalty interest. Is he dumb enough to roll the dice on a Hinds County jury if Shad wants him prosecuted?
Well, we know Lynn doesn’t have the balls to go after Bart for the interest and investigation costs, and so does Bart. Too much political capital at stake to go after Mr. Mississippi. Suing China is more politically expedient with no risk of political fallout.
Keep on keeping on, Lynn.
How's it going collecting all that DMR money?
They getting much back?
This is just the appetizer, there was something much bigger at play that fell apart.
Shad continues to chase publicity. But what about the Governor that appointed him and appointed Davis as DHS director at the center of this quagmire? And after making a big deal about the Ole Miss professor that Shad tried to sue- what’s happened there since the professor lawyered up & made a fool out of Shad?
Attn 11:57 Not much of a football fan are you?
Attn 11:57 Not much of a football fan are you?
11:19 Yes, that amount is high, but, it would shock you how much 'famous' people on the speaking circuit make for the same speeches you have heard before.
Favre is the only one who's paid anything back.
Any case will be a civil case, not a criminal one.
Favre's regular agent, Bus Cook, wasn't involved in this matter, and thus doesn't need to be fired.
Until the public (i.e. us) gets to see the actual contract, this is just he said/she said.
Sounds like to me Shad White in an overzealous “gotcha guy”.
Favre signed this contract to be paid but I believe the state (or whoever is responsible) never provided the speaking engagements or platforms for the work to be done. What’s Favre supposed to do?
Shad sounds like a dorky geek trying to make a name for himself.
He will never get a vote from me.
This back and forth brings up a good point.
Let's say I get $1000 from some contract that seems legal but turns out to be TANF money. I do what the contract says (even if it's not much) and report it as income. I pay taxes on it. The the clawback comes. I return the $1000. What happens to the money I paid in taxes on that $1000? Is it gone? Is that taken into consideration at all? Anybody know?
Seems like you could get hit with a triple whammy 1. Pay it back 2. Interest 3. Even if never spent it still don't have it all if you paid taxes
This will not end well for Favre. I do not agree Shad is chasing publicity. What he does is newsworthy and good for the state.
I'd like to "see more" about what Favre stated in his Facebook post, but I'm not signing up or logging in to Facebook to see it.
Love how all the experts on here know which one of these two folks is right - Shad or Farve. Instead, they support the one they like, accusing the other of being wrong.
Honestly, I don't know what the contract required, or whether Farve met the terms or not. I know what Shad says, and what Farve says - and while I might have an opinion as to what the truth is, my opinion means no more than the two dozen experts commenting prior to me.
I do know that Farve was not responsible for knowing where they money came from, or whether its use as contracted for was an appropriate use of the funds. Ergo, I can't find fault in Farve for taking the money - but I can find plenty of fault for whoever submitted the invoices and paid the money if it was done before the services were rendered. (Retainers, certainly, but not the whole contract amount.)
As to Shad's interest and investigative costs - they ain't going anywhere in court. No interest because it is a disputed amount. Investigative costs - those were not on Farve but on Davis, New, Phil/Staff, whoever. My needle falls against Shad (who I think has been doing a good job as auditor) because he fails to go after the top of the pyramid - the guy who appointed him (after having served as his reelection campaign managers a few years earlier), Deputy Phil. Too many connections to the top floor of Sillers that Shad is trying to hide - while laughingly claiming that was the whistleblower.
But back to the question - its easy to determine if Farve performed any, all, or none of the services required from his contract. He says he did, Shad says he didn't. Problem could be easily solved, but arguing it on Facebook, Twitter, etc aint the way to do it.
It’s interesting how people will defend Favre in this situation, but many of those same people accept as truth everything else Shad has said with respect to the other parties involved. I guess Brett gets a pass in the court of public opinion due to his celebrity status.
@2:15pm - Obviously you’ve never paid enough in taxes to know how that works. On his next tax return, Brett can report that income was “refunded” to the paying party and can request a refund from the IRS on the taxes paid on the “income” that was returned/refunded.
So Shad claims he doesn’t do backroom talks and negotiations……ask him who coordinated the payback of the first $500k.
I like Shad. We need more like him in the government.
Shad for Governor!
Shad needs to go after doctors who steal from medicaid.
BF taxes. I imagine his cpa will file an amended return and get credit on taxes he owes in the future.
Has Nick Coughlin, Fitch’s buff body guard and head of communications for Fitch, paid anything back?
Will Fitch return his campaign contributions?
Shad is wasting a lot of time and money trying to make a name for himself. Dumping shit cases on local DAs and expecting our joke of an AG to prosecute anything is beyond laughable. But thanks for going after the sheriff for misusing $1,200 from the canteen. Did any political targets not take a pen or stop for milk on the way home in their state vehicle? Between him and Fitch just a lot of noise and nothingness. Another example of MS best and brightest making us proud.
And yes 3:23. I have never had to repay an unsatisfied customer back $1,100,000.00. Please forgive
Brett Favre, too big to fail.
1:34 "Sounds like to me Shad White in an overzealous “gotcha guy”. "
Ahhh... what do you think he's paid to do?
"$1.1 million for 5 speaking engagements/radio spots is $220,000 per talk. If he actually did them does that seem reasonable? $220,000 per event?"
Not up to you, but to the market. Are you familiar with the term? Agents are hired to represent people. Agents insist on contracts that reflect market. No agent remains employed who does otherwise. And it's the job of an agent to gain contracts that equal or actually exceed market. You sound like you might be a car salesman. I assume your sales manager covers this in weekly meetings.
But...compare it to the money paid to your pals named Clinton and Obama.
If he had done the work the Auditor would not be wanting the money back. This is so simple ; just count the number of speakings he made. CPAs who are trained to handle number counting not find the required 5. He did not do the work but was paid by some dishonest folks at DHS.
Does anybody seriously think Farve new these were welfare funds? He probably paid 35+% in state and federal income taxes. White should acknowledge Farve’s cooperation and repayment by waiving the interest. Celebrities and politicians get these lucrative deals regularly. Why else would our US Senator invest $100,000 in the timber scam. Do you think that he was just dumb, or he gets good offers for being a Senator?
3:05 - At least spell the man's name correctly? Is that too much to ask if you'd like to be taken seriously? Pop another top.
@1:10 this is BS. The Auditor is coming after a lot of people who fulfilled their contracts. He’s playing politics. He doesn’t give a damn about disclosing all the facts. This is all about his political career.
When I saw Favre on the Eli and Peyton talk talk talk football show several weeks ago, Favre struck me as either being drunk or aged beyond his years. He may not know what payments he has received or if he spoke or didn’t speak. Shad is going after multiple and high profile people in order to advance his trip to the Governor’s mansion. Both men has issues.
Shad, like Geerod Gorbech, wants to be the next Gallo...then on to Limbaugh's spot. Shad never dressed out and Geerod never could throw a decent pass.
Everyone keeps talking about "contracts" but have these alleged contracts been made public? Putting the word "CONTRACT" on a piece of paper doesn't make it one.
Also, $200,000-ish for a short in-state appearance and speech/talk is absurd. If Farve's minimum is $200K for such as that he doesn't make many speeches.
But regardless of Farve's pricing I haven't seen any info on it - what were these multiple events that supposedly justified and were supportive of having a $200K speaker _each time_ even if that was Farve's standard asking-and-getting price?
Shad is very unprofessional. He has no business commenting on State business through Twitter, and he definitely shouldn't engage in back and forth comments with a person that he's investigating. Any professional would file their paperwork with the courts and let it play out there. This Twitter war makes him seem childish and pouty. Using social media this way demeans the office of auditor. I didn't like it with Trump; I don't like it with Shad.
