Former MCEC bookkeeper Ann McGrew pleaded guilty to one count of making fraudulent statements yesterday in Hinds County Circuit Court.
A grand jury indicted her nearly 2 years ago for making fraudulent statements and conspiracy. The indictment accused her of helping Nancy and Zach New embezzle more than $2 million in state funds.
District Attorney Jody Owens recommended remanding the conspiracy charge. McGrew agreed to testify against fellow defendants Nancy New, Zachary New, and John Davis.
Circuit Judge Adrienne Wooten approved the plea bargain. McGrew
will be sentenced at a later date after she cooperates. Judge Wooten rejected
an earlier plea bargain in February. The maximum sentence is up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $5000 or less.
Kingfish note: it is usually a big deal when the accountant flips and this case is no exception. Stay tuned.

The maximum sentence is only 5 years for stealing as much as $50 million?
Phil's friends' frauds.
12:34, the charge that got the guilty plea was making a fraudulent statement.
that's how the government got al capone.......they flipped his accountant.
I’ve seen this before….accused people without the means to fight, guilty or not. They end up getting used. I’ll bet you a dollar this thing doesn’t work out real well for Anne McGrew and Brett DiBiase (the other “star witness”), certainly not the way they may currently expect. The DA is risking his career on this case, and I think he’s got a problem.
So this lady is basically admitting to lying to someone at some point. Word is she was a shoddy bookkeeper who had similar issues at past employers. She’ll certainly be painted as such. This case is so screwed up there’s no way the DA will be able to prove it. Hell, it’s in Hinds County so he probably doesn’t need to.
When is the New’s court date?
So…where does that leave recipients of News largesse?
She wandered all around and handed money out to some well intentioned people.
If it helps keep our (tax payers) cost down, I'm good with it.
Its Minds County and they are white, not the place to pick 12.
@8:45am - Hinds County Circuit Judges… Yeah, whatever happens to the News, it will be appealed and overturned by the MSSC. Justice Dawn Beam’s fingerprints are all over this too. FEEL and his posse. “It’s for the kids!”
Even if convicted, they will all get pardons. Zero chance Phil’s Friends get held accountable unless the feds get involved.
Interesting….these charges have nothing to do with the concussion drug money that Phil Bryant was tied too. Is that being swept under the rug? Shad won’t go after that because of who is connected to it. If I’m John Davis or Phil, I just got real nervous. I bet other people are talking too, and not to the local folks.
Not sure why the accountant would plead guilty to that charge unless there are specific emails that contradict the statements. Why even make a statement before reviewing all the evidence when you know they are going to charge you with conspiracy?
Could 8:24 and 8:45 be related to Nancy, to Phil or is it Farve. If they fail in state court the Feds will pick up the slack.
PS the state can get ready for the demand letter for the Feds to recoup these funds so it can be put back for its intended purpose.
The vague allegations at 9:45 that the appellate courts are nothing more than political tools are BS.
However, the way that sitting justices and judges don't serve out their terms, allowing the governor to appoint their replacements, does much to feed that dark narrative, and undermine confidence in the courts.
@12:07 - you must be new to the state. You’ll figure out where the skepticism comes from soon enough.
So one of the State’s witnesses is admitting on the front end to being a liar. That should work out well.
@12:07pm - Agree with your point about leaving early and appointments.
@@12:07 - Also agree with your point, especially about 9:45's b/s opinions.
Granted, the early retirements leading to appointments are somewhat a reflection of what a good Judge might think - that the position should not be an elective one. Granted, some disagree and love to elect everything from dog catcher up to the top and all in between - but with the current 'judicial ethics' that restricts a Judge from actually campaigning leaves us with oftentimes the wrong person being elected.
While I might not always agree with the appointee (federal judiciary, good example) the appointment process does give a better representative group on the bench than the elective process. Disagree? Look at the Hinds County bench and tell me where justice has gone here.
1:46, I'm not new to this state.
I graduated from law school in Mississippi over 20 years ago, and have been licensed to practice in Mississippi ever since. Probably 30% of my practice is at the appellate level.
FWIW, I first picked up the point about appointments from something KF wrote, and thought is was spot on. I still do.

Booties are puckering all around.
My mind always goes back to when Lynn met with us after she won AG.. From Lynn’s interaction with us and how she ran out after she said what she wanted to, I knew Lynn’s plans were to fire us all! Lynn lied about how she looked forward to working with us. I felt it in my soul she was full of BS!
@3:57pm - Thanks Justice.

Here's the way it works. You're in a room with a nice, large table surrounded by five or six lawyers. The tell you (and show you) exactly what they have on you. You're small potatoes. They need your testimony. Your lawyer whispers to you. You flip. Probation on conspiracy. (remember: You will be sentenced AFTER you testify!)
In Mississippi it's ok for a witness to lie as long as they get the conviction numbers up
