He Gone

-Live press conference posted below.

MSU fired Head Football Coach Joseph Moorhead This morning. The university issued the following statement.

Mississippi State Director of Athletics John Cohen announced Friday that Joe Moorhead has been relieved of his duties as head football coach.

"In consultation with President Mark Keenum and after a thorough review and evaluation of all aspects of our football program, I have decided that a change in leadership is in the best interest of our team and university," Cohen said. "I want to thank Coach Moorhead for the hard work he has done with our football program. I wish Joe and his family success in the future."

"It is clear the time has come to change the leadership of our football program," Keenum said. "Coach Moorhead is a good man, and I have nothing but respect for him. I sincerely wish the very best for him and his wonderful family."

Moorhead compiled a 14-12 on-field record in his two seasons, including a 7-9 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs finished the 2019 campaign with a 6-7 record.

Cohen announced that a national search to identify the Bulldogs' next head football coach is underway and that associate head coach Tony Hughes will serve as interim head coach.

"We look forward to finding an outstanding leader both on and off the field who connects with our Bulldog student-athletes, coaches and fans to the fullest," Cohen said.

"Director of Athletics John Cohen will be working to find a new head football coach who will demonstrably reflect our shared expectations for a consistently competitive football team that displays discipline, pride, and preparation in all facets of the program," Keenum added.

Cohen will hold a noon CT press conference Friday. It will broadcast live on SEC Network and streamed live on SEC Network+ via the ESPN app, on @HailState Twitter and on MSU Athletics' official Facebook page.

Any coach deserves more than two seasons.

Horrible move...
I'm a state fan and we must recognize that we aren't Alabama, LSU, Notre dame Ohio State Michigan etc... we are generally a middle of the pack SEC team. Not sure where the program goes from here. It's like starting from scratch.

Must be jealous of the staff that Lane Kiffin is putting together at Ole Miss.

Anonymous said...

Cohen is lucky they're not packing the same Uhaul together. He was told to get it done, against his own advice.

Salter, like Pelosi, will now complain that he was not consulted prior to the kill.

HAHAHA...the Lane Kiffin hire has already had its' effect nation-wide, but especially in starksville. msu's "knee-jerk" reaction to our Head Coaching hire and the national attention it has provided us has brought out the most severe "little brother syndrome" for all doggy fans many have witnessed in decades.

This is just too good and my popcorn bowl is full as I watch this glorious debacle unfold.

Thank you all bullpoops for the entertainment...and...and...and it's free!!! :D

Good riddance!!!

Ole Miss increased the ante, they are all in. State just said "Not so fast,

One glaring mystery with no answer is wasn't Keytaon Thompson given a chance from the get-go? He paid his dues under other QBs and coaches, and no mention of him anywhere..

The Lane Train has it's first victim, and the ball hasn't been snapped.

Anonymous said...

You Ole Piss, I mean Ole Miss fans, need to get over yourselves. Moorhead is probably a great guy, but his lack of discipline among his players cost him his job. Good decision by Keenum & Cohen.

Anonymous said...

Did Moorhead get ring sizes before he was fired?????

Anonymous said...

Leg humpers are in disarray. If it is true that Slo Jo Mo had already signed an extension, this problem runs deeper than the ball coach.

Anonymous said...

HAHAHAHA!!! During the msu press conference, AD John Cohen said that msu is "an elite program"!!! I kid you not...the man really had the nerve to say that after his most recent 6-7 record.

Yes, he said a 10 game bowl streak is elite...but he forgot to say that the streak was held together by an "academic bowl" to keep that string alive!!! HAHAHAHA!

AND after winning that academic bowl game, the team STILL had a losing season ending record! HAHAHAHA!!!(btw, the school was later caught by the NCAA for tudor-gate involving 10+ players for academic fraud that helped them get that academic bowl...hilarious...can't make this stuff up...HAHAHAHA!!!)

This just keeps getting better and better...HAHAHAHA!!!!

It was obvious he had lost control over the players after this last flare up. He should have sent Gay packing. Hell, he knocked the starting QB out of the line up with no punishment.

Anonymous said...

I love watching ole miss and state fans argue about who sucks the least/most.

Makes me smile and appreciate how simple this place really is.

Well-placed sources are indicating that Rick Comegy is currently considered the front runner for the job.

Bless your heart, 12:54. Does that rant make you feel better about the last three years in Oxford?

Anonymous said...

This has nothing to do with Ole Miss signing Kiffin and the guy who had a player die under his watch(cue the he was aquitted by 2 independent investigations). Truth is Moorehead and Cohen pissed in the fans Cheerios after the way Moorehead didn't handle the Gay/Schrader debacle. Had Moorehead sent Gay packing and told him never to step foot in the program again he would have most likely saved his Job. Cohen got an earful from a ton of fans and he knew he would be gone had he not fired Moorehead. This is 110% how it went down and the little brother up north who thinks its because they hired a coach who is a loudmouth and has underperformed at every school he has been at except C-USA FAU and the Ex-Maryland coach with a players death on his hands are kidding themselves and looking like fools.

Anonymous said...

Hey 1:09...try selling your spiel to the nation!!! HAHAHA!!!

EVERYBODY following the Ole Miss hire and now the MoFiring can see this for what it is..."little brother "tryin' to keep up with big brother"...plain and simple.

When you can actually get to the Cotton Bowl and "WIN IT" (instead of getting steam-rolled" by the opposing RB or by some unimaginable miracle make it into the Sugar Bowl and actually win it just once, let alone more than 5 times as we have...well, then you might be able to call yourselves "Big Brother" or even "elite"!!! HAHAHAHA

Color me "waiting for hell to freeze over" as I watch and wait for that to happen!!! HAHAHAHA!!!

Sports Illustrated article states that if msu has a shred of decency after the JoMo firing, the school should let the most recent football signees out of their Letters of Intent.

Attorney Tom Mars is most probably working with all of the signees to help them out of these commitments and on to other more reputable schools.

Did the QB really think he could fight a RB/LB directly? Should have kept his mouth shut instead of getting a broken face. His mouth cost his coach a job.

Tom Brady would never fight Legarrett Blount.

Anonymous said...

I never had faith in his ability to handle the players.

He just did not understand the culture down here.

This has everything to do with current perception of the university. After the ISIS deal a few years ago, all the fights, the academic cheating, the sex scandal, player arrests, and lackluster boring teams, the fans were too embarrassed to not make a change. It didn’t help that the in state rival has been making a splash with their new hires and fan support is on the rise. Will be interesting to see if fans will get excited for the new hire or take a wait and see attitude since the current admin hasn’t been very impressive with their recent hires.

Never hire a coach from north of the Mason-Dixon line!

Anonymous said...

Nobody at MSU gives a rat's ass about TSUN hiring the guy who chases coed skirts. He'll self destruct by the middle of next October and will be history. Kiffin's antics will put Pastor Freeze's pocket phone behavior to shame. Moorhead was 'gone' before Kiffin was a thought.

Anonymous said...

So how much is his buyout going to cost, and who gets stuck with that bill?

Anonymous said...

JoMo lost State fans after not winning 10 games in year one. Everything was teed up for him, and he swung and missed by being a complete imbecile. All he had to do was run a modified Mullen offense for 1 year to get the fans on his side, and he would have had the next three years to try and figure it out his stuff. Yankee Freakin' Idiot!

3:00 pm - if my memory serves me, Leg Humper U has employed a coach or two that enjoyed the ladies (and quite recently in one case). And, Leg Humper U embraced the devil himself (Jackie Wayne) when he was otherwise toxic nationally. Perhaps, you should put your rocks back in your little glass house.

Anonymous said...

Like everyone on this site I have no clue why the fired him but am glad they did. When you pay someone millions of dollars a year the expectations should be high and results Swift. The university now needs to remove Gay from the team.

Man, lots of little brother chatter on the interwebs from O-town. Seems they can get the Maroon out of their mouths. I guess that's what rent free living is like in their heads. None of this hiring and Firing is because of Lane Kiffin. None. The only person worried about Lane Kiffin are the fathers of Blonde Co-eds attending UM.

For all this "splash hire" talk about Kiffin, please, do tell why he has been so awesome at anywhere besides FAU.

Anonymous said...

Oh well, at least he didn’t look straight at the interviewer and say no I’m not going to leave like Mullin did. If that’s how you spell his name. He tried but read this and it’s why we are such a dumb state......

When you base your University on this you know you’re in trouble.

If the qb getting beat up by his own teammate didn’t seal the deal, the first half play in the bowl game when the MSU player tried to break the Louisville players ankle after the play ended probably did. Turning point of a game they should have won. Not a peep out of the coach but it was sickening

How much negative publicity has Ole Miss and MSU football cost our state. And it all has happened to keep up with Alabama and most of the other SEC teams in football. Time to realize that they will never catch up, even with breaking NCAA rules.

Not sure why the Southwestern La. coach would reject a job at an “elite “ college football program like Leg Humper U.

Not sure who State will decide to hire; however, there were only three coaches in the nation willing to stand on the Ole Myth sidelines next September. Matt Luke, his predecessor they fired, and the teenager they hired.

Nothing like the fireing of a stinking overpaid football coach on a goat ranch in Starkville to bring out the beautiful people of the SEC. the only place you see a bigger turnout of these beautiful people is the bankruptcy and divorce courts.

The small and poor state of MS has too many college and junior college football teams. They split a limited talent pool and cannot recruit competitively outside of MS. This situation will never change.

Anonymous said...

Here's something I would like to hear comments on. How long has it been since a MSU coach was fired after just 2 years? How often is a coach in the FBS fired after just two years unless there is a character issue? That said, Morehead was a bad hire. Now what I want to know is just how much responsibility does Cohen take for making such a bad hire? He acts as though he had nothing to do with JoMo's hiring. What about it Cohen???

Anonymous said...

Yes Cohen is a golden boy of MSU but but he has made several bad decisions since being made AD. How long does MSU Put up with this before they realize what the real problem is

Anonymous said...

As an LSU alumnus living in Mississippi, I've enjoyed watching the Ole Miss and State debacles during the last few months. You need to realize that outside of Mississippi both Mississippi SEC teams are no longer relevant. Plus, the "elite programs" (sorry Cohen) continue to separate themselves from the rest of the college football programs.

Anonymous said...

Regardless of Moorehead’s ineptitude, the buck stops with Cohen. A bowl committee works for a year to provide a great atmosphere and special experience for the teams and players that they invite to be their guests. They go out of their way to be the best hosts they can be to insure that the players have a lifelong memory of the experience. The Bullthugs can’t even fake decent behavior for a few days and fake respect for their hosts. Two players on the same team get in a fight and the opening bowl storyline is that the starting quarterback has been knocked out of the lineup by a fellow teammate. They embarrassed the bowl, their hosts and their school. Moorehead’s empty response to the event is irrelevant. Just like his apathy about players skipping bowl practice. Cohen should have stepped in as the Director of Athletics for MSU and sent the players home immediately, if for no other reason, out of respect for their hosts.
Can you imagine what a coach at a real “elite” school would have done? How about Saban’s reaction to such thuggery? Never mind, Alabama doesn’t sign street thugs with absolutely no character. Forget Moorehead, he is gone. Cohen is the problem to sit idly by and allow his players to smear their hosts with such an embarrassment. He only fired Moorehead after decent State supporters were rightly embarrassed and humiliated that such thuggery is regularly condoned by their coach and AD. Ever watch a State sideline pregame at kickoff? Ever watch when someone gets a turnover? A culture is embedded a little at a time. The Bullthugs have allowed it to grow like a cancer.
If you sign enough animals, they will eventually run the zoo. State folks have never learned this since Sherril was there.

Anonymous said...

Some folks need to get some real problems in their lives. Way too much angst about a friggin football coach.

Anonymous said...

6:19 Hey Saint Paul or however you are, Lighten Up! What program would you consider for your approval? Holy Cross? Harvard? Army? Everybody else recruits the same "thugs", even Alabama if they have enough stars beside their names. Unless one of the thugs from State whipped your ass or did something to you personally why do you single them out in a world of thuggery?

As stated earlier in this thread, bullpoops haven't even been mentioned as an elite program anywhere but on the Gene'sPage puppy site...yes, that's where John Cohen said they were elite...HAHAHA!!!

Now programs that have elite historys play in elite bowl games such as Ole Miss did and actually won by destroying Oklahoma State in 2014.

Only elite programs are recognized by having their Head Coaches recognized as such in "Hall Of Fames"...yes, even if it were for victories long ago...my point, "historys".

The Rebs have played in 8 Sugar Bowls and winning 5 Sugar Bowl trophies and yes, everyone of them are still in the Ole Miss trophy case (even 2014's...weep dogs as you thought we'd have to give it back...HAHAHA!!!).

Just last week, Coach Vaught was inducted into the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame and no, there is no Dan Mullen or Jackaie Wayne Cheryl in that company. Remember, we're talking "ELITE" here.

One of you dogs, need to inform msu AD John Cohen what "elite" looks like...even as recent as 2014.

Why not? This should tell everyone just how many folks have already turned them down for their "elite" program's head coaching position!

They are DESPERATE.

My bet is they hire a former msu player that has never been a Head Coach...Ole Miss can attest that THAT is an extremely bad idea!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
