Match Day Mishap at UMC

Match Day is a milestone on the path to becoming a doctor.  It is a day when graduating medical students find out where they will enter a residency program after med school.  UMC's Match Day was March 17.  Unfortunately for the entire graduating class, a UMC employee turned a day of joy into a day of horror as a congratulatory email included an attachment that contained a great deal of personal information about residency applicants.

How personal was the information? The attachment included the Comlex scores, USMLE scores, rank order list of order of preference, and other information about the applicants. Needless to say, UMC went into full damage control mode.  The UMC Brass a letter on April 3 to all residency applicants giving its side of the story.

There are probably more than one or two applicants who were none too happy.

Classic UMMC. This institution is lost. Once a well respected medical institution, they are now the crying whipping boy to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Interestingly enough, all of the higher ups and decision making individuals at UMMC view themselves as a highly competitive and sought after institution, of the likes of Massachusetts General. Yawn. Laugh. Yawn.

Sh*t like this happens from time to time. Get over it. Move on. Next.

Anonymous said...

Shit happens - sounds like they have taken steps and are handling it in an appropriate manner.

Anonymous said...

So, is this what UMMC means by “telemergency?

UMMC: -20
UAB: +1000
Than you for this. I will continue to avoid ummc like the plague and advise all of my friends and family to do the same.

The olds are very weak on email! Sad!

I'm sure these future doctors (who will all start off making many magnitudes what the average hardworking American will at the peak of their career) are very upset.

A secretary forwarded an email unintentionally... that’s what happened... otherwise this event reflects literally nothing at all. This happening has nothing to do with UMC as an institution or individually with the physicians who practice there. 6:07 - from the tone of your post it’s pretty clear you’re an absolute captain of industry, most likely with a wildly rewarding marriage and striking children who’s accomplishments outnumber even the generous character limit afforded here on the JJ boards. Hope you didn’t spend too much time away from your undoubted success to grace the rest of us with this unparraled insight. Keep making the world a better place you handsome, self confident genius!!

HATER!!!>>> So, is this what UMMC means by “telemergency?

Now THAT's a telemergency!

So Feel Bryant says he will be homeless in January after relinquishing his role as Governor. Methinks he will land nicely and softly In a well-paid government relations gig at Butler Snow (no law degree required). Pretty good for a deputy sheriff. I will remind everyone when this comes to pass.

Test scores? Who cares. I thought it was gonna be dirty selfy pics or credit information. People are so sensitive these days.

Anonymous said...

I take it some snowflake that didn’t like their score made this private matter public? Mistakes happen. Nobody violated a law like HIPAA. An employee made a mistake.

Anonymous said...

It’s an accident. Big whoop.

@7:40 pm- Thank you Sir Calvin for your dedication. That was a very lengthy and passionate post.

Anonymous said...

Hey 7:33 - when you produce what it takes to get into and get through medical school we'll pay attention to your babbling.

Anonymous said...

Exactly! Shit happens! Who the hell gives a shit about the released information? It's not like they released a list of pecker and cup sizes.

My doctor said if you have an emergency, tell the responders to take you to UMC. He said it emphatically. UMC ER knows how to handle critical situations, mainly because they handle so many of them daily. These are top quality MD's and staff.

Now, there's no way I'm telling them my SS#. But if its life or death, I'm headed to UMC.

Bryant already has his lobby firm ready to launch. He may take a side commission from BS, but he'll be rolling in the big lobby money come January with or without BS.

He won't even need his bullet.

Its an honor to be accepted to a residency program. They should be a little less pussy about their scores. A higher one doesn’t make you a better physician in the long run.

Fire her. Some mistakes are just too big to overlook. Hire a compitint person in her place.

My son is currently a second year medical student at UMMC. My doctor trained at UMMC in the 80's and UMMC came up in conversation at my last appointment when he asked how my son was doing. He proceeded to tell me that all of his former classmates and a lot of the older doctors of mississippi despise what UMMC has become. According to him they repeatedly deny acceptance to descendants of mississippi physicians into their medical school and they take foreigners and out of state applicants into their residency programs when there are good candidates from Mississippi . He told me to tell my son that if he has a choice he should not stay at UMMC for residency. I thought that was a pretty bold statement from an otherwise quiet man who is a product of that university system.

Mistakes happen, it’s unfortunate but Lord knows we’ve all made them in some form or fashion. None of us are infallible.

Anonymous said...

@7:33- sounds like you couldn’t get into medical school and still have hard feelings about it. Get over it!

Anonymous said...

Laughable this thread has led to Feel-Billy. No one will take that huckster serious when he is out of office. No. One.

“According to him they repeatedly deny acceptance to descendants of mississippi physicians into their medical school”

You seriously said that??

What year did you finish at Ole Miss?

Anonymous said...

I wonder how uncomfortable this is for Calvin Thigpen, as this is his first match day as internal medicine residency program director. I guess you get placed in important roles when you ride your daddy's coat tails at UMMC and never have to worry about a thing.

Anonymous said...

"they take foreigners and out of state applicants into their residency programs when there are good candidates from Mississippi . "

Bullshit. They don't get the American medical school grads to apply to most of their programs.
===================================================================
"“According to him they repeatedly deny acceptance to descendants of mississippi physicians into their medical school”"

Again, bullshit. Many students there are children of Mississippi physicians.

10:43, you couldn't be more mistaken about Calvin's advancement in relation to who/what his father was.

I have an ill husband and we spend too much time at UMMC and will have to continue to do so. I had some problems with how funding for departments and services were made when they had to make cuts to funding. However, you can bet your sweet ass that if I have an emergency and MY life depends on where I go for care, I will be heading to UMMC. Face it folks, we are in Mississippi and we aren't #1 in anything but poverty and crime. We are so lucky to have UMMC. If I am dying, I don't care where the person is from or what they look like if they can get the job done. UMMC is the best we've got and there are dedicated, brilliant, compassionate and hard working people there trying to save lives. Their ER is top notch.

Having been an administrative assistant for many years, I can understand a wrong attachment going out with an email. Technology is great and allows us to make mistakes faster than ever. I was always horrified I'd make a mistake and send the wrong something in an email (or in a snail mail.) The work pace is fast and there usually isn't anyone to proof what goes out. That is just today's world. Forgive the poor assistant for being human and making a mistake. I can promise you that person is probably in agony over the mistake. We all make mistakes. It is just that most of our dumb mistakes don't make it to the news on JJ, thank God.

I have ZERO respect for the guy who wrote that letter and named the staff member. Seriously, man? You are so unaware that you would name the staff member who committed the mistake? A simple “A staff member inadvertently...” would suffice. I don’t know that guy and wouldn’t know him, but he’s has some serious learning ahead of him if he thinks it’s ok to do that (and I don’t care what the circumstances are).

10:43 pm

You jealous man.

I feel sorry for you.

Calvin is a Rhodes scholar and a super guy and will be a stellar physician.

I hope you find solace in your misery one day. I suspect you will likely wallow in your own short comings like Willie Lowman and eventually be a drug addled bar stooge at Martins until your early death.

I hope Calvin stays in MS for the benefit of many.

As a student who’s information was a part of this, this was an honest mistake that has been handled with the utmost care. Dr. Thigpen is an amazing role model and UMC is lucky to have him. Anyone with something negative to say clearly doesn’t know him. UMC has its problems, but the internal medicine department as a whole is a gem.

Anybody who believes Phil Cindy-Bryant will be pursued (in any capacity) after his Uhaul leaves the mansion, is smoking crack. All we will ever hear from him is, "I have decided to stay around the house and spend more time with the jonquils and my family". As if he has a choice.

Anonymous said...

Keep licking their boots 7:16. That's the only way to get ahead. You know the game

Anonymous said...

This was a mistake plain and simple. And, to UMC's credit, as soon as they found out about it, they called every one on the list and then sent a letter stating exactly what happened and apologizing again. That's what people with integrity do. NO one is perfect, but a sign of true leadership is owning your mistakes and learning from them. I would expect nothing less from Calvin Thigpen. As for the poster saying "he rode his father's coattails", nothing could be more laughable or further from the truth. The guy never made a B in his life, is a Rhodes Scholar, and when he was student body president at Ole Miss led the charge to get rid of the confederate flag in the football stadium. He could work anywhere in the world and has chosen to stay in Mississippi. UMC is better because he's there.

Anonymous said...

It saddens me to hear that there is pending litigation regarding this petty mistake. Ummc will suffer because of some loser attorney licking his chops

Thigpen- top NCAA male Scholar Athlete in the entire US, a Rhodes Scholar, President of his med school class, and doctor. Who's the "Dumbo?" The trolls are as stupid as their posts.

Have a cousin who is former Harvard Med faculty, Chair of Med. at a near Ivy Med School, and both public and private colleges grad. Says go to a state medical college. UMMC, UAB, MCG, etc.

1/3 the price, and the same or better education.

This ain't Law School and looking at slaving in NYC for awhile.

It's a great school. And we have some GREAT doctors there.

I have been a patient of the otolaryngology (ENT) group at UMMC for years. I don't know if my doc is head of the department, but in any case, he is one of the senior physicians on staff. We are lucky to have such a doctor at UMMC. Sometimes one meets up with a doc and one can just tell that they are healers. My physician would be a welcome addition to medical staff anywhere, such as Duke University Medical Center or the Mayo Clinic.

Once again, I am grateful that he elects to practice at UMMC.

Agree with 6:57. Don’t care if he’s the Pope, shouldn’t have given the employee’s name.

Anonymous said...

To UMC credit, the marketing department has become very adept at using these negative intended JJ posts as free advertising, such as 10:27

9:55 I agree about the price advantage of state schools, but UMMC was ranked #163 of all US medical schools when my daughter applied recently.

How many schools are there?

163

She went to a top-15 school with my blessing.

Anonymous said...

Wondering where the poster at 12:23 got his/her stats. I've googled a couple of the "facts" in the post and can't verify either of them. For example, there are actually -- according to the internet 179 -- medical schools in the US - 143 (MD) and 36 (DO) -- NOT 163.

Also, I couldn't find any site that ranked all medical schools. As for a published "ranking", UMC is actually unranked in the US News & World Report rankings since they didn't send back in the voluntary survey. Additionally, the ranking only went up to 120 - not 163 or 179.

So, sounds like 12:23pm is just looking for a reason to bash UMC and Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

Okay, I’m confused. Remind me why this little tempest-in-a-test- tube is remotely noteworthy? Borrrrrrring. And look at all the het-up comments! Your readers, Kingfish, are some kinda sad-sack losers, if this non-event can get ‘em this excited.

Did it ever occur to you that this letter was not intended for you, or for public distribution? The named employee had already called the recipients of the letter- per the letter.

Does the letter read: Dear Blog readers? I didn’t think so.

This is 10:27.

You really are a cynic. So what's your problem with UMMC anyway?

Anonymous said...

The medical school is not a great medical school. The hospital is not a great hospital or a great place to train. The Medicare Compare rankings (an objective measure) gave the hospital its lowest (1-Star) ranking this past month. (About 250 of the 4,000 or so hospitals ranked got that lowest designation).

That said, this is not a victimless situation. The physicians who matched to UMMC (and those who didn't) have potentially further training to do (fellowships) and jobs to seek and the release of their ranking and scores and recommendations will follow them for the next decade.

This was an awful mistake.

Anonymous said...

They didn’t violate HIPAA, but they violated the SHIT out of FERPA.

Anonymous said...

There will be many FERPA complaints submitted to https://studentprivacy.ed.gov/file-a-complaint

I am pleased UMMC patient and wish I had been one sooner. You cannot get the overall care from doctors who work together for the patient elsewhere.

UMMC recognizes that you have an whole body where the parts are connected and so they just treat a limb or organ. So, the doctor you see has a complete history and chart of your health. They will know if a symptom treated by the internist is relevant to the neurologist.

If you need a different specialist to see you, the reference is quickly done.

I get test results immediately on MY Chart rather than waiting days for someone to call. I can also ask questions and have a response from my doctor within 48 hours.

The pharmacy offers wildly cheaper medications as they can buy at " teaching hospital" rates.

And, if you have a trauma, you'd best go to the hospital that can deal with ER trauma cases.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for posting the link to the FERPA complaint website. I'm not even a victim of this but I'm going to file a complaint because UMMC is such a spineless corrupt organization. I want them to suffer.

Anonymous said...

Agree with everything you said, 9:12AM.

My family has wonderful doctors at UMMC. We have zero complaints about any if them, or the care we have received there. Each and everyone of them were researched and highly recommended to us before we ever considered using them.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
