JPD issued the following press release:
On Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at approx. 5:46 PM, Jackson Police Officers responded to UMMC regarding a shooting. Upon officers’ arrival, they made contact with the victim, identified as Tajuana Denson, 39. She had been shot once in the chest and once in the arm. She was transported to UMMC via private vehicle, treated and is listed in critical condition at this time. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that this incident occurred at 6739 Presidential Dr. There was an argument and physical altercation between several females, children and adults, ages ranging from 13-39. During this incident an unidentified 13 year old black male subject that resides at the location, and not believed to be involved in the initial altercation, retrieved a handgun and fired several shots. Subsequently, the victim was shot.
Other individuals that reside at the location and are relatives of the 13 year old were allegedly assaulted with objects and sustained minor injuries. The party that was involved in the altercation with the victim also sustained minor injuries. The motive for this incident is unclear at this time. It can be confirmed that the victim does not reside at the location, and there are preliminary findings that she was involved in the altercation.
The 13 year old subject was detained on scene and transported for questioning in this matter. The weapon allegedly used in this incident was also recovered in close proximity to the scene. The 13 year old subject was later released after questioning. His name is not being disclosed at this time due to him not being charged and his juvenile status. No arrest(s) have been made at this time stemming from this incident.
This investigation is ongoing and the outcome will be forwarded to the Hinds County Grand Jury to be presented.
