The Madison Police Department issued the following press release:
On Thursday, July 31, 2014, at approximately 1:51 P.M.
Madison Police officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at the
Ridgecrest Baptist Church located at 7469 Old Canton Road in Madison. Initial reports indicated that an employee
had been physically assaulted by a male acquaintance. As officers were arriving on the scene they
observed that the perpetrator was leaving the church in his vehicle. The officers attempted to initiate a traffic
stop on the suspect’s vehicle on Old Canton Road at which time the suspect fled
from the officers in the vehicle. A
vehicle pursuit ensued which proceeded north on Highway 51 into Madison
County. With the assistance of the
Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Metro One Helicopter officers continued
to pursue the suspect vehicle northbound on Highway 51. During the pursuit the suspect vehicle left
the roadway and struck a church sign at 2780 Highway 51 near the Nissan
Parkway. The suspect then fled from the
vehicle on foot. Officers gave chase
apprehending the suspect. There were no
injuries or other vehicles involved in the pursuit/accident.
The suspect was tentatively identified as Larry
Johnson, B/M, age 20, of 112 Jackson Ridge Road in Canton, MS. Mr. Johnson was transported to the Madison
County Detention Center. He has been
charged with one count of Aggravated Domestic Violence, Felony Fleeing, and a
host of motor vehicle violations.

Mr . Johnson is about to learn a very important lesson in money management and how to raise $$$$$$ bail
Could this have put the daycare children in danger? Was it in the daycare area?
The is the church with the giant penis steeple, right?
The report says the perp be from Canton.
How is assault by an acquaintance translated into 'domestic violence'?
I reckon the 'dummy' sheriff's car always parked there didn't deter this young man.
"hit a church sign off Highway 51"
If only he had hit that obscenely obnoxious flashing message board in front of the Methodist Church just North of Madison.
The giant penis steeple is actually a cell phone tower
"Acquaintance" in this case probably means boyfriend or baby daddy.
Why would a pursuit that damaged property and could have resulted in injury or death to innocent motorists be necessary when the victim clearly knew who assaulted him?
Can't police get the facts to a dispatcher to radio in that they have a perp's name and to call off putting the public at risk?
What is the pursuit policy?
What is the cost of putting a helicopter in the air and what policy dictates when that is done?
The Devil made him do it.
Hey this is madison, he is lucky Mary didn't call out the national guard.
Babies are kept in a daycare there. I'm glad they got him. A church should be considered a safe place. What an ass.
I'm glad they got him as well 10:08 am but " getting him" didn't require yet another high speed pursuit!
It's past time to ask what the pursuit policy is and what training the Madison police have undergone.
Deport his ass back to Jones County.
Oops, wrong thread. Sorry.:-D
Does the perp of the lady he assaulted attend the church?
All of the none L E O people complaining about the pursuit grow some balls and get into law enforcement if you can do it better
"All of the none L E O people complaining about the pursuit grow some balls and get into law enforcement if you can do it better"
As a Madison taxpayer I have every right to scrutinize and criticize how my exorbitant taxes are spent.
Answer the question or shut up. How much does using a helicopter cost and how is it justified. It seems like tremendous overkill to catch someone whose name and address are known to the victim. Haven't there been enough settlements paid out (also from taxpayer dollars) after unnecessary and poorly conducted high-speed chases in the metro area in the last few years?
Hey 7:14 the use of the helicopter is paid with a yearly fee. If you actually paid attention to how your taxes were spent you would know this. So apparently you are just the typical know-it- all who knows absolutely nothing but can tell someone how to do it. If this was your loved one that was assaulted you would be crying if the police didn't try to catch the perp.
6:43 am Is that yearly fee for unlimited use? Do we pay a yearly fee when there is no use? And, what if the use costs exceed the fee? If we use this for domestic violence will there be enough air time available to search for a kidnapped or lost child? You've read the contract, have you? Then enlighten us as to the details.
Of course we all want perps caught whether it's our loved ones or not. But, you miss the point if you assume we have to put innocent bystanders at risk to do that.
Or perhaps, you think the deaths of innocent people in MS in chases of everything from a failed attempted crime to car theft was justified.
Maybe if your loved one had died just sitting at a stop light because police were chasing in high traffic areas, you'd want some sort of rational pursuit policy.
I'm all for a chase when it's a serial killer or rapist or there's a hostage or it's a terrorist.
But this is a domestic violence case where the police will know exactly how to find and catch the " perp".
Try to watch less television and read more.
8:10 I have been in law enforcement since 1994 so yes I know exactly what I am talking about. No I would not want a loved one hurt/killed due to a chase but in today's society we have to deal with people like you(damn if you do damn if you don't). Everyone loves to complain about us but we are the first ones called when trouble arises. Also the helicopter fee covers the whole year regardless if used or not. I believe Madison P D pays $5000.00 a year. And since you know so much about law enforcement you understand that the majority of law breakers do not use their real address. Dont believe me ask any officer you may know and they will tell you exactly what I just said. So there are your details and not much t.v. here as I am out putting my life on the line while you are in your cozy bed.
8:10 Typical sheep response.
Maybe the next time an innocent bystander gets killed sitting at a red light by someone fleeing in a high speed chase over a minor crime (i.e., not murder, rape, etc) the officer who decided to pursue can do jail time instead of having the taxpayers soaked in paying the settlement.
You know, like those of us who pay your salaries would have to do. It might make the easily deranged among LEO think about changing professions.
The victim in this case knew the name and REAL address of the perp. 10:26 seems too dim to realize that.
2:57 I'm not dim at all.Just have the balls to do the job your too scared to do. Oh and by the way I pay my salary too. I pay taxes just like you.
All the whining about high speed chases seems to ignore one thing. A nut case who has just assaulted somebody, sped off and headed through town at a high rate of speed is very likely going to stop along the way and either kill himself or somebody else. The police are entirely correct to pursue these criminals. It's not a matter of 'he didn't really do anything that bad'.
too bad this wasn't ray rice that might have given him the key to the city still mad at nfl on this one
You mean this happened at MONEY SHOT BAPTIST?!
We call it that, because not only does the the steeple seem extremely upright, and astonishingly well-articulated, but there seems to be something white shooting out of the top, as if the steeple were experiencing a 'Moment of Epiphany' - like the "money shot" in a... um... 'video'.
And yes: I too lament the fact that it wasn't one of the more horrific church signs on 51 which was 'smote' by the Perp's vehicle.
I googled the address of the sign, and see that it's right next to "Corrections Drive". How convenient.
