The Sun-Herald provided an update on the special-needs 14 year-old student assaulted at George County High School last week:
" LUCEDALE -- Austin Stokes, the 14-year-old special needs student who was assaulted at George County High School last week, wanted to go back to school Tuesday, but his mother said the principal asked that Austin wait until Thursday.
"He wanted a day or so, so he could plan something for Austin's return," she said. But she said she wasn't sure what.
According to Lori Ann Dees, the principal also said Austin would not be welcome on the football team's float in Tuesday night's homecoming parade.
Dees said Austin had been invited to ride the float by a mother of one of the football players. The theme was to have been anti-bullying and Austin was excited to accept the invitation, she said.
But Dees said the principal who called told her rumors that Austin was hit by a football player caused such a stir in the Athletic Department that it would not be possible for Austin to ride the float.
"He said he felt it would cause more problems if he rode on the float with the football players," Dees said. "Austin was disappointed, but I asked him what he'd like to do instead of the homecoming parade, and he said he'd like to go to the county fair in Pascagoula. So that's what we're going to do." Article
This website did post it was a football player who hit Austin. The student was listed on a previous roster of the football team. The mother posted on her FB page it was a student. This website has attempted to contact the mother several times with no success.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

Robbie Bell will perform Her two latest songs: My Best Friends are in the Media and Mama's, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be George Bell. Sid Salter of The Clarion-Ledger will host "Pin the Tail on the Trial Lawyer", sponsored by State Farm.

Trollfest will have a dunking booth where Muhammed the terrorist will curse you to Allah as you try to hit a target that will drop him into a vat of pig grease. However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. The School is trying to bury the incident?
Good example of a school administrator seeking to control the victims while the inmates run the asylum. If I were the mayor of that town, I would tell the school that if they want to have a parade on my streets, the boy will be master of ceremonies. Otherwise, you can have the parade in a pasture.
I have been following the Facebook page that has been set up to support Austin Stokes. The page has over 37,000 "likes" and continues to grow.
The boy who beat up Austin has been identified by name on that page, by his own girlfriend, with whom he has a baby girl. The boy named is listed on the GCHS 2010 football roster that is available online, but according to a FB comment made by the girlfriend, he apparently has not played football since then. In fact, one of her comments suggested that he was incarcerated last fall.
Too bad...the boy is 6'5" and weighs 240 lbs, at least he did two years ago as a sophomore according to the roster. He might have made some team a good player.
5:57 wasn't there a Burt Reynolds movie about a prison football team? ....
Good movie, too, 8:18.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Austin is scheduled to return to school tomorrow (Thursday). An Ocean Springs dentist, touched by this senseless attack, fixed Austin's broken tooth at no cost to Austin's mother.
Are we forgetting that the poor victim in this scenario is the one who threw a fully loaded Coke can at the boy who turned around and popped him?
We Kenny Stokes a behavioral pass and excuse him because he's a buffoon. So, what's our reason for giving Austin a pass for his role?
I don't like that the mother, who was not there, appears to be the primary source for this story.
I want to hear what witnesses say under oath...not teens taking sides ... and especially not mothers who weren't there.
The current reaction by adults makes bullying worse!
At the heart of bullying is an emotional over-reaction to real or imagined slights and an exaggeration of normal childhood conflicts and competition where every member of the school is pressured to choose up sides.
Also, a problem with bullying is the lack of respect and deteriorating authority for teachers . The bully's parents are the first to jump to their baby boy's or girl's defense.
Right now, I see two boys behaving badly and a bunch of adults escalating a teenage conflict that, in my day, would have been seen by the adults as a way to teach better behavior instead of being a big news story. The punishment would have been meted out to both proportionately by the appropriate authorities.
If indeed an innocent victim, Austin, is being done no favors here. He is being robbed of the opportunity to stand up for himself. And, while well intended, be sure he is getting the message that he is too disabled to be other than the victim in his life story.
Yes, a fully loaded Coke can was thrown at the boy by Austin, supposedly in response to the boy calling Austin a "retard."
We have all known and seen schoolyard bullies, but there is something wrong when the "provoker" is a 17 or 18 year old former football player who is 6'5" and weighs 240 lbs. and the person targeted with the name calling is a legally blind 14 year old with cerebral palsy who barely weighs 100 lbs.
How often, 9:45, do these stories and versions contain the words 'supposedly', 'reportedly', 'said to have', 'someone said', 'according to his mother' and 'it was suggested'? As 9:39 suggested, the information spread out on the table so far (and certainly here on this JJ Blog) does little other than incite emotional reaction when we have no evidence of a full investigation and witness testimony is so far minimalized.
So, let's run the boy who weighs the most up a wooden post and light him on fire.
"A dentist was touched by this senseless attack".
>>"A dentist was touched by this senseless attack".<<
As opposed to: Many support the righteous beatdown administered to disrespectful little cripple. When it comes to messing with the football team, this little victim had better learn that it is sports that run the public schools! Here his victimhood jeopardizes the school spirit at Homecoming. There will be time to administer him his punishment jest as soon as we gitrdun on the field of dreams. GIT SUM!
The shadow falls in the woods... No one <> heard it.
Kangaroot; you simply MUST stop posting as 'anon'.
As Johnny Cochran might say, "What we haaaave here; is a rursh to jurdgment."
Regular JJ blog readers will want to recall coming to the immediate aid of the poor renter in Madison who only wanted her Christmas peacock. And quickly we sided against the arrogance of a mayor who would pester, pick on and bully the poor woman who had scraped together enough to purchase the paltry purple peacock.
And how quickly we learned the facts (pesky things aren't they?) and assembled a posse to run the peacock-tress out of town.
I think what happened to Austin was terrible. But let's not forget that he first assaulted the former football player by throwing a (full?) Coke can at him. So by Austin's own admission he committed the first crime because he believed he had been called an ugly name.
I agree with those who say that the school has an obligation to interview all of the students who witnessed the event. Apparently we were all under some false impressions for a while, such as Austin being "blind" and in a wheelchair. He's apparently not in a wheelchair and has some vision impairment -- big difference.
