Questions remain

Most of Jackson now knows it was Ethan Van Sice that killed MRA teacher Leigh Ann Ward in the horrific crash that took place last week on River Thames Drive. However, there are a few questions to be asked of JPD, that should have learned its lesson after the seriously-flawed Irby investigation. WLBT story.

1. Why did JPD release the name nearly a week later and only after media outlets (this site was the first) published the name of the driver?
2. Why did JPD wait a week to conduct accident reconstruction at the scene?
3. Why did JPD take the tape down prematurely?
4. Is JPD going to charge Mr. Van Sice with a crime?

Here we go again. Jackson PD = Incompetent.

Wonder where the Sheriff stands in all of this. HA!

Anonymous said...

Lots of lawyers will be involved in this......

To me, this reflects on the methods used by JPD. Maybe incompetence, but I dont really know proper police methods. I would suspect that even given the delay , yard cleaned up, etc that the JPD will still get enough info to assess what happened and if criminal , should get reasonable prosecution.

To suggest that this and the Irby was some sort of conspiracy to protect the drivers., I find that that would take a level of competence far exceeding the JPD's level. In other words, I think we're dealing with general sloppy, shoddy, incomplete police work, but as they say ..."close enough for government work"

On this case I think you are right.

The question is not a reflection on the JPD only. It is a reflection on the entire administration of this city. It is being managed on the basis of reaction to complaint only. There is no sense of duty or obligation or pride in any Jackson city department. It seems as though employees just wait for their paycheck and apply themselves only when their neglect is exposed. It is epidemic from the top down. This week's episode at the City Council is a good example.

Any discussion of a city government's incompetence ought to be done as in a comparison of some other cities. I figure Jackson is about on par with other
cities. Incompetence and inadequate governing ability doesnt makes its only home in Jackson,

Anonymous said...

Let the other cities worry about their problems as we attempt to remedy our own, if possible.
There are many cities that are tough on crime and run a tight ship. Others, like Jackson, apparently lack good leaders.

Why some fail at being leaders.
1. No leadership skills
2.Lack of focus and direction.
One might edge ignorance in there, also.

Did the JFPer's show up? ie. Lets not talk about Jackson, lets talk about other cities. Waaaaaaa.

Jackson is inept - City-wide.

Detroit, MI
Gary, IN
Memphis, TN
Richmond, VA
Baltimore, MD
Washington, DC
New Orleans, LA
Flint, MI
Philadelphia, PA
Youngstown, OH
Birmingham, AL

Are these the cities you had in mind?

Anonymous said...

Actually, they have fewer government employees per capita and for purposes of comparison have much higher populations. So I would say the list is out.

How about this list...

Somalia
Afghanistan
Pakistan

While the populations are not the same size, the same amount of ineptitude in government and security is comparable. Heck we have to have military force in these places to keep the peace. What does that say?

Kingfish asked:

1. Why did JPD release the name nearly a week later and only after media outlets (this site was the first) published the name of the driver?

Because they weren't sure how to spell his name until they saw it in print?

2. Why did JPD wait a week to conduct accident reconstruction at the scene?

They couldn't immediately find anyone with experience to handle it?

3. Why did JPD take the tape down prematurely?

They needed the tape for another crime scene?

4. Is JPD going to charge Mr. Van Cise with a crime?

They are checking the law books as we speak?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am deeply sad that Ms. Ward's family still has no answers.
Shame on those who are the cause of this. There is no excuse they can offer that will be acceptable.
Anonymous said...
they need to contract out law enforcement to madison and rankin. or the guard
The scene should be treated as a crime scene immediately. Any cop should know that. After all lifesaving measures have been seen to, all of the evidence must be documented regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. A reconstruction can be completed later, but with modern technology, completing one at the scene at the time of the incident is not unreasonable.
JPD needs competent management. For a department of its size, it should be accredited, internationally, not state.
I, too, don't think this is a conspiracy to hide something. I do think, like with the Irby situation, this is gross negligence at its best...no unusual for government work.
What an idiotic statement. And dumb asses like this get to vote? No wonder we are going down the toilet in America!
Anonymous said...
5:32 PM the downtown dumbasses make those type of comparisons everyday while trying to obfuscate the impact of Jackson crime.
Anonymous said...
Doesn't that neighborhood have video surveillance?
Anonymous said...
Anony 5:32, you're right. We’re about down to 3 main classes of people in America: the God syndrome types consisting of trust fund kids, movie/rock stars, many of the college professors who have never done anything but go to school their whole lives, etc., and the dumbed down idiots like Anony 1:42 on the other. In the middle we have the third class/the folks America can't do without but are rapidly becoming a minority; the producers.
The producers are the meat. The God syndrom and dumbed down are the bread and instead being covered with mayo, mustard and/or ketchup the dressing is horse shit!
Officer Barnhart states "Jackson Police Communications contacted me at my residence, in reference to this collision on February 11, 2009, 2236 hours, at which time my assistance was requested in reconstructing this collision. I went to the scene and I began my investigation."
Good point 7:45am.
Anonymous said...
Sure you are. Dumbed down idiots don't know any better.
Anonymous said...
7:26 I agree with almost everything you said, BUT, you might want to rethink the Professor statement, teaching a class of 100-150 18-22 year olds, with limited resources and additudes of these kids, is not an easy job.
I'm glad I'm not participating in this one.
Often times , its the ones who dont think they are 'dumbed downed idiots' turn out to be the best examples.
Thats the way it works.
Anonymous said...
.... except you dont use the term 'dumbed down'.
the scientific name is "triple idiot"
Anonymous said...
Yes, the teacher's family needs answers, however I am afraid the truth will never come out if depending on JPD or their detective division. I know that from experience.
none said...
Not to suggest the JPD is competent, but might there have been some legitimate fear that the driver could have been harrassed? The DA can't make any decisions to charge the guy till he gets the tox screen back.
I was initially suspicious of the driver being the son of a connected person, and looking at heading to an out of state college.
I fear the JPD messed up collecting evidence of the reported speeding and possible cell phone, though probably the cell phone company can pin point the time of any phoning or texting from a specific number.
Anony 10:01, I certainly don’t mean to stereotype all professors but was referring to the idealistic one’s looking down their noses at the rest of us; especially the one currently residing in the White House while only a few years earlier was bouncing his credit card and couldn’t (or wouldn’t) pay his student loans. Funny how someone who couldn’t run his own house got elected to run the country.
Regarding the attitudes of kids these days, I feel for you, although if you happen to be teaching one of mine right now, she had better be one of your humble students, even if only one of the few.
Noboby should ever be charged with a crime for an accident.
Rebekah said...
7:55- You...are an idiot.
The kid needs to be charged for his reckless driving that resulted in an innocent woman being killed. If he had been doing the speed limit and PAYING ATTENTION, he wouldn't have slammed into her so hard it pushed her car backwards into trees. I live in the neighborhood- I saw the scene. Horrific is an understatement. He walked away without a scratch...reckless driving isn't an accident. It is a crime. Don't speed ESPECIALLY in a residential neighborhood with a speed limit of 25!!! Always pay attention to what you are doing when behind the wheel of a car. He killed an innocent woman. HE is at fault. HE is to blame. HE needs to be charged to the fullest.
Anonymous said...
He deserves the benefit of the doubt. It could have been wreckless, or the accelerator on his TOYOTA could have stuck. He's a good kid and we need to wait until all the facts are in before any conclusions can be reached.
Anonymous said...
I agree with Shoe Girl. 7:55 is an idiot! The accident was the result of negligence, reckless driving, disregard for the law, etc. What if that had been YOUR child, spouse, parent, relative, friend?
Considering that he completely flattened a stop sign and kept going, I really think there must be more involved than texting. Why didn't he stop texting to see what he ran over?
Rebekah said...
Good people make mistakes...this one, however, cost someone their life. But, good call on the TOYOTA... I am sure they will use that in court.
Anonymous said...
Yes, 7:55 is an idiot. It was no accident. It was negligence, as in megligent homicide. The JPD could have charged him any time they wanted, but they would have been responsible for any medical bills he incurred shile in custody. I have seen much more professional PDs not charge people while they were hospitalized as long as they were not a flight risk. Once they were ready for discharge, they got arrested.
Anonymous said...
He walked away without a scratch, What is the old saying "God takes care of drunks and babies". What was he on? PLEASEEEEE the accelerator stuck!!!! And for the DA, he is as incompetent as JPD. The kid will walk (for whatever reason) however he is a killer, no doubt. Where do these officers go to school? Do they not know what to do at a CRIME SCENE?????? Must not this is the second accident scene that has been screwed up.
Anonymous said...
Anony 5:40 said "Where do these officers go to school?"
5:40, according to a former JPD officer, when Jimmy Wilson took over as JPD chief of police in the early 90's, JPD became corrupt and even had convicted felons wearing badges. Kane Ditto is a fine human being but he’s a bleeding heart and had to go out of state, Washington DC of all places, and do as he stated he would do: hire a “black man.” Sad thing is JPD had qualified black men on the force that could have made a fine JPD chief.
In the early 90’ criminals feared the police; by the mid 90’s they were pals with many of them.
Anonymous said...
The question here is whether or not this accident was due to negligence on the part of the driver. He could still be held culpable for her death. If the accelerator stuck, then he and Toyota could be culpable. If he (or the owner of the vehicle he was driving) was made aware of the accelerator problem (and who hasn't heard by now), why wasn't the car fixed? Isn't the owner slightly responsible for having such a dangerous problem corrected?
At the very least he could be charged with manslaughter.
Anonymous said...
I read somewhere that after the wreck Ethan Van Sice asked "What happened?" Then he mentioned something about his phone. ???
Does anyone recall having read this?
Anonymous said...
Negligence is not necessarily a criminal matter. Plain old negligence is what ambulance chasers aim for.
Whether the young man is actually charged with a crime depends upon how fast he was going, what else he was doing, and what he may have ingested ... and on JPD and the DAs abilities.
I hope he was not doing anything wrong, but it seems he was at least speeding.
Anonymous said...
isn't twice the speed limit reckless endangerment? If so, at a posted 25mph, it's not a hard reach to believe he was doing 50+ to cause all that damage.
whether or not the disgrace that is JPD will be able to pull their heads out of their asses (and each other's 'significant others' various orifices) long enough to do any actual police work, that could *GASP* result in a conviction, is a whole 'nother issue
Anonymous said...
I'm not ducking the question. Is 50 in a 25 zone reckless endangerment? That seems to me to be a question for a jury. I drove on River Thames to take my kid to preschool most every morning for a year, and my recollection is that there were bikes and trikes and garbage cans and pets, and it wasn't a straight road that took you from Ridgewood to Old Canton. I'd say you had to be drunk, crazy or just not caring to drive 50. But, I really don't know if that behavior is usually punished criminally in Jax. And, I seriously question whether JPD has the capability to determine how fast the young man was going. I'm sure that if the young man has the financial resources to hire a good attny, he'd find experts to say he wasn't going that fast at all.
For the young man's sake, I sort of hope he was clean and the there aren't phone records of him texting or something. But then again, he may be worse than just a thoughtless stupid 19 yr old.
As Ms Ward's cousin we are not waiting for the truth, we know what it is. Her family lives 3 blocks away from the scene. We saw the yard he drove into before he hit her. We saw where he drove over the stop sign before he hit her. He hit her so hard that her car was pushed backwards into a crepe myrtle tree that sat 5-7' in the woman's yard.
He got out at the scene and texted. His adrenaline should have been far to high to allow for that unless he was on something. Othewise he would have braced for impact and he too would have been injured. He wasnt hurt.
He's not a good kid, he's now a killer. I dont care what else he does with his life or has done with his life, he killed my cousin and I will never give up until we get justice for her.
Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.
