Jason Zebert entered a plea of guilty in U.S. District Court yesterday.  The U.S. Attorney charged him with one count of theft of government property and funds.  Mr. Zebert currently resides at the Rankin County jail after a Chancellor held he was in contempt of court for misspending money in an estate under his care as conservator.  The Mississippi Court of Appeals recently denied his appeal.  The court ruled:

The U.S. Inspector General slammed the Mississippi Department of Public Safety for misspending $7.1 million in safety grants from 2007 to 2010 in a little-noticed report issued in Feburary 2013.   Funds intended to be used for DUI programs were instead used to support other activities in violation of federal law.  The abuse was so bad that the IG said only 5% of the citations issued under the program were for DUI offenses.  JJ made repeated attempts to contact DPS officials for comment.  The efforts were unsuccessful.

A Madison County grand jury determined Abigail Bonner's death was a suicide. Rankin-Madison District Attorney Michael Guest issued the following statement:

State Auditor Stacey Pickering zinged the Department of Public Safety in the results of a performance audit released a few minutes ago but found no money was misspent. The report said DPS had very sloppy record keeping and the comptroller "lacked sufficient skills and experience" to manage DPS finances.

Rankin County Animal Control Officer Ken Sullivan and Hinds County Chief Deputy Chris Picou appeared on the show today to discuss dog fighting and the recent bust in Rankin County.  Very informative show.  I also discussed the comments made by Councilman Melvin Priester, Jr. about the proposed charter school in Jackson at the end of the show. 

Update: They all filed notices of deposition yesterday.   Yup.  Precious, Crystal, the school, Ms. Owens, and the good Doctor all have to give depositions.

Our favorite bully sued St. Andrews, as he alleged the school failed to protect his kid from.... bullying.  Precious and Crystal Martin filed a lawsuit against the school in October in Hinds County Circuit Court.  Mrs. Martin is the daughter of Senior Hinds County Chancellor Patricia Wise.  The suit also names Headmaster George Penick and Head of the Lower School Leanna Owens as defendants as well.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey announced more arrests after his deputies broke up a dog-fighting even Saturday night:

A sweet second grade girl at Stonebridge Elementary school in Brandon wants "her generation" to help clean up trash and help preserve the earth.  This is a 7-year old, and she wrote a letter to her principal stating this.  I think this is wonderful for a child this age.

Civil war broke out in Leflore County as the supervisors tried to depose the board president.  They voted to do so but there is just one problem.  The president refused to step down.  Then the fun really started.  The Taxpayers Channel reported:

To raise taxes or not to raise taxes.  Such is the question facing Jackson voters tomorrow.  There is no two ways about it.  Jackson's infrastructure is falling apart: sinkholes, mini-gushers in the middle of the street, disintegrating clay pipes.  The can has been kicked down the road so many times Jackson is running out of road... literally and figuratively.  How will you vote tomorrow?

The U.S. Attorney charged former Pearl prosecutor  Jason Zebert on one count of theft of government property and funds on January 9.    The Mississippi Bar's website states' his license is suspended.  

U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett postponed the sentencing of C.E. Frazier, Jr., Claiborne Frazier, and Austin Frazier in a notice released by the court:

In-network? Out of network? Which hospital should I use?  Does my insurance company cover my doctor?   Such questions about health care may be irrelevant in Mississippi if the legislature passes a proposed "any willing provider" bill.  The bill has not yet been introduced although JJ obtained a copy of the draft.  It is posted below.  The bill will bar insurance companies from using "network status" to determine reimbursement rates for health care providers. The bill will also force health insurance companies to accept "any willing health care provider" in a geographic area who meets the plan's qualifications.

Senators Sally Doty and Josh Harkins appeared on the show to discuss all things legislature. 

An HK MP-5 was stolen from the vehicle of a member of the JPD SWAT team overnight.  Thieves were able to bypass the alarm system in the vehicle and then steal the weapon.  The weapon was not secured in a lock box as is standard procedure.  MP-5.  A nice, little toy. 

The Court of Appeals upheld the incarceration of attorney Jason Zebert for contempt of court in Rankin County. Mr. Zebert has been a resident of the Rankin County Jail since 2012.

Hopefully he will not be the same as the old boss.  The Hinds County Board of Supervisors elected Darrell McQuirter as President.  He replaces Robert Graham.  The board previously elected a president every January to a one-year term.  The board voted 4-1 to rotate the presidency among every supervisor every 9 1/2 months.

More Katrina fraud? The federal government awarded $653 million to the Gulf Coast Regional Infrastructure Grant Program for the purpose of developing and implementing infrastructure in the six coastal counties.  HUD audited the Katrina relief money and said the state  misspent the money on appraisals and wastewater plants that were not needed.  The report charges:

A federal judge shortened the sentence of "terror lawyer" Lynne Stewart.   The Obama administration asked U.S. District Judge John Koeltl to release her on the grounds she will likely die in 18 months from breast cancer.  She only served four years of a ten-year sentence.

In late November, the Board of Directors of the College Savings Plans of Mississippi met to discuss the future of the Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Plan (better known as MPACT). Treasurer Lynn Fitch and the College Savings Board decided to temporarily close MPACT to new enrollees in September 2012. The Treasurer's office then hired an actuary to perform an audit, which raised serious questions about MPACT's sustainability.
