Hinds County Circuit Judge sentenced Anne McGrew to serve one year in prison and four years on house arrest for her role in the Nancy New scandal today.
The grand jury indicted McGrew in 2020 for making fraudulent statements and conspiracy. McGrew was a bookkeeper at New's company, Mississippi Community Education Center. The indictment accused her of helping Nancy and Zach New embezzle more than $2 million in state funds. McGrew pleaded guilty to one count of fraud in 2021 but her sentencing was postponed until after the conclusions of all prosecutions.
"Ms. McGrew's early acceptance of responsibility and cooperation allowed to bring down the biggest fraud scandal in Mississippi's history. Without her, we would not have been to move as quickly as we did in securing indictments against the key five individuals or their plays. She was the only defendant who did not enrich herself," said Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens.
The sentencing for the other defendants has not been scheduled.
Kingfish note: It is said she who makes the first deal gets the best deal. If this is the best deal, it's a pretty safe bet Judge Wooten will be throwing quite a few years at the other defendants.

hope this is the "low-hanging fruit plea deal" that will bring the real criminals to light. She obviously did wrong -- but also did what she was told. I doubt she had the insight and capacity to pull this off with no direction.
The fact that Phil Bryant has escaped all responsibility is a travesty of justice.
What evidence is there against Bryant? Some of you act like you never heard of evidence. Read this story again. You’ll see they had actual evidence against this bookkeeper. That’s the way it works…you can’t charge someone just because you don’t like them.
I know that she broke the law, but this seems a steep sentence considering she is the only one to not profit from the matter.

You Phil fans are bigger sycophants than the Todd Mardis bros. Bryant is connected to literally every player in this saga either personally, professionally, or both. The News, Davis, Favre, and all the rest have a common nexus: Phil Bryant. There is enough smoke around him to choke an entire city.
Will he be punished? Unlikely, because the Feds don’t go after governors unless it’s Louisiana politician-level obvious. The state won’t because those who could (looking at you Shad and Lynn) owe their careers to Phil.
He’ll likely skate, but don’t try to pretend he wasn’t a major player in all of this.
What do you get him for? There are no texts, emails, correspondence, or testimony of Bryant telling Davis or the News to do something illegal or misuse TANF funds. At best you MIGHT have a conspiracy charge based on the text messages but good luck making that stick. You probably couldn't even get an indictment on it. Sometimes the case is just not there.
