JPD issued the following statement.
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, officers responded to the 400 block of Briarwood Drive for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers detained a Black male who had exited a vehicle in front of the building, holding a firearm, and had engaged in a verbal altercation with a White male. An altercation took place, resulting in an exchange of gunfire and damage to three vehicles.The detained suspect was identified through surveillance footage as 26-year-old DeMarcus Griffin. He was taken into custody, transported to the Jackson Police Department, and later charged with three counts of Shooting into Occupied Vehicles. The unknown white male fled the scene. There were no injuries.

Well, if you're going to shoot up a parking lot, don't wear a sign that has your name and age on it, I suppose. Of course, that begs the suggestion that if you've detained a suspect, maybe look at whatever ID he might have on him first. After all, with the "ID via footage" method you might wind up writing an inane press release like, "The suspect was ID'ed in the footage as Calvin Klein, circa 1990s."
