Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
Approximately 5:40pm, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department received a request for assistance from the United States Marshal’s Service in reference to an arrest warrant they were attempting to serve at 1594 Shell Oil Rd, Brandon, MS 39042.
Although the name of the suspect is being withheld at this time, the subject of the arrest warrant was a Wanted Person on a felony charge of Aggravated Assault with a Gun through Omaha Police Department in Omaha, Nebraska
The request for assistance occurred after the suspect began firing shots at US Marshals from inside the residence.
As additional law enforcement officers began arriving on scene it became clear the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence alone. Based upon the suspect’s actions, an additional request was made to have the sheriff’s department dispatch it’s armored vehicles to the scene.
After the armored vehicles arrived, negotiations commenced which were followed by more shots being fired at law enforcement officers from inside the residence.
At 8:45pm, officers on scene heard an additional single shot fired from inside the residence and could not get any response from the suspect inside.
After the decision was made to breach the residence, the suspect was found suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
For purposes of transparency, Sheriff Bailey requested that the MS Bureau of Investigation respond to the scene to investigate this incident.
