The boomtown that is Oxford is becoming more than a little crowded. One poor soul vented her frustration on social media.

Plantation nation. Be rich or serve them.
The city of Oxford has always viewed the students as a source of revenue, as if all young people have rich parents who pay the bills.
It seems like there was always a kind of passive-aggressive dynamic going on.
Oxford has become the least “Mississippi” town in Mississippi, and maybe that’s why outsiders tend to like it. It’s gone from artsy and intimate to manufactured and packaged. Abners is gone. The Gin and The Hoka are gone. But hey, you can buy a pair of $500 jeans on the square. So that’s great, right?
Oxford has become a way to go to Mississippi without experiencing any actual Mississippi.
I know that individual likely doesn’t read JJ. But here is some advice for the rest of you who may feel this way. Take a trip to a third world country. Somewhere like Haiti or Jamaica. Perhaps the Dominican Republic. Stay a few weeks. Maybe a month. Really take in the local experience of things like unreliable, undrinkable water. Flies all over meat for sale in the street markets. Open sewers. Before you know it, you will be happy to back in Mississippi with the minor irritations like waiting 30 minutes in an air conditioned government office or courthouse.
Don't get me wrong, growth is hard, especially in a small town with limited infrastructure, and also when everything is car oriented these days, but it is awesome to see Oxford is growing and growing. MS needs a booming city or 9 or 10.
Was looking for a condo up there. Look at these price increases that she vents about. This is a plain, nothing special condo in an okay location. Sold for 109k in 2021; listed at 280k today. Others in the same location are being listed at over 300k. No way this ends well for real estate speculators. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/1802-Jackson-Ave-W-APT-21-Oxford-MS-38655/110510008_zpid/
I speculate you could hear similar complaints from those working in Auburn-Opelika, Athens, and Starkville. These aren't big cities with diverse economies and literally revolve around the universities. Oxford's growth has come from retirees from out of state as well as students from other states who are largely affluent. It's put an incredible strain on housing availability, infrastructure, and pushed many locals out of the area.
Oxford is nothing but Grenada without the nice lake. It's nothing special.
KF - this is inconsistent with how you usually handle these types of one off social media posts. Normally you would refer to this as a bedwetter and add an insult or two.
As does Starkville, Hattiesburg, Cleveland etc, etc, etc.
Its becoming a mini New Orleans. An dining and entertainment haven that the help can't afford to live in or get to any more.
I did see that Ole Miss enrollment numbers have been going up a lot these last few years. I honestly thought the university was expanding along size the student body. Seems like a big oversight.
Speaking of Oxford, I went to a concert this past spring and stayed at what Oxfordites call one of their signature hotels, The Graduate. That place was a dump. Rode hard and put up wet is an understatement. Why people fawn over spending the weekend there shocks me.
Oxfordians think more highly of themselves than they should. Though having cases of beer handed to you via the drive thru window at the Brittany Store is astounding.
I went to Ole Miss 1989-1993. Neither it nor Oxford were like they are now.

Heard university has considering limiting or capping the number of Freshman students each year due to the housing and parking issues. Texas and Georgia car tags all over Oxford and they do have their parents credit card..
Meanwhile: The most famous steakhouse in north Mississippi is closing down in Marshall County and has broken ground in Oxford. Marshall Steak House.
Following the lead of Ticos who closed down in Ridgeland and moved to Oxfart. Follow the money.
You just mad cause the kicked that LSU ass. Otherwise you would call this a bedwetter alert.
The native Oxonians lost control of what was once a lovely place to live about 25 years ago.
Oxford is lost! Get out while you still can. Sell, sell, sell!
This is 2025. Find a vacant home that is walking distance to work and squat there.
A booming Oxford is good for Ole Miss, Oxford and Mississippi. But not creating a parking solution for employees is a failure that needs to be fixed.
1:21, As someone who lives in Cleveland, I can assure you we aren’t in the same league as the other college towns you mentioned. At best, we aren’t losing population as fast as other Delta communities.
But just stop and think about it for a minute. It's not just any old place you're doing this. It's *Oxford.* It's the University of Northern Mississippi. You don't know how lucky you are, boy.
"No way this ends well for real estate speculators."
And they've earned every bit of pain coming their way.
Yep, Ole Miss and Oxford is a far cry from the charming small town/campus it once was ... even during the 80's.
The same thing is now happening in Starkville.
And while Hattiesburg has experienced tremendous suburban growth over the last 25 years, USM had nothing to do with it.
Jealous much?
Huh? What a dumbass post. Anything within walking distance of USM is up 200%.
Put the bong down.
Everything down there has moved into Lamar County.
USM had nothing to do with it.
@12:27 the $500 jeans, while not in many people’s budget, is a Mississippi success story. Look at their client list and who they really cater too. It’s impressive. I personally know one of the owners and he is actually a Delta State graduate. They have a store front in an affluent college town where a lot of out of state kids have Mo eh to blow. Terrible business plan, huh?
The increase in university enrollement statewide is due to the state front loading dual credits in high school so that upon high school graduation, thousands of students almost are finished with their sophmore year of college. Nobody's reporting on this, because it's a giant double-dip scam of the Mississippi taxpayer that is meant to keep the community college and university systems solvent.
Tico’s in Ridgeland did not close. And enrollment at Ole Miss continues to rise. Two new dorms under construction.
Famous...just totally overrated..watch it fail in oxfart...shyster
Lifelong rebel. Undergrad and JD from Ole Miss. I despise going to Oxford now.
To 1232 …. Your absurd comparisons to the Dominican Republic are noted. The people of the DR have a longer life expectancy that the fatass beautiful people of the SECwho ride around all day in their golf carts
Over 56% of Ole Miss students are from out-of-state. Think about that statistic.
Both OM and MSU has 'gains', but nothing much, and attributable to ancillary campuses and on line crap plus high schoolers being counted. USM had a 2% rise amounting to maybe 27 students. Delta State surprised all Mississippi public colleges in enrollment percentage increases. Get your facts straight, Bubbette.
If not for Howard Ballieugh and the legislature, Tico's in Ridgeland would be a ghost town.
According to reliable reports, Oxfart now has more roundabouts than the rest of Mississippi, combined. Those things are giving fits to coeds jogging in short shorts.
Build the workers housing underground so they can come up as needed for work.
When did Tico's close down in Ridgeland?
Are multi-story parking garages against the law in Oxford? It seems a fairly obvious solution to the parking problem.
Tico’s in Ridgeland didn’t close. 3:05 knows that, he’s just being a jealous mouthbreather.
The population and car density has reached the point where Oxford needs to build a mass transit system and ban cars from the square and immediate vicinity.
Ole Miss has over $75MM in construction projects currently being built on campus. Oxford is the smallest SEC town in terms of population. Try going to Knoxville, Gainesville or Tuscaloosa .. on game day. Oxford is definitely a better place. .. but those towns are way ahead of Oxford on transportation infrastructure.
12:32, you described Jackson.
This
Is what happens with you admit almost any applicants to your university. 97% to be exact. You have a pulse? You’re in!
I used to say "Oxford would be great if it weren't for all the Ole Miss students." I've now amended that to say "Oxford would be great if it weren't for all the Ole Miss students AND their douchebag parents."
Redneck town anyway...
"Ole Miss has over $75MM in construction projects currently being built on campus."
And by what metric is that a measure of success? All these multi million dollar building projects including stadiums will be empty in fifteen years. All these indoctrination centers spend money like drunken sailors - because the money came from the pockets of others.
Nice to know that those out of state students who leave as soon as they graduate are being subsidized by Mississippi taxpayers with in state tuition.
I graduated from OM in the 90s, and I agree the town has changed a lot (and not for the better). Traffic and parking are awful now and it's lost a lot of its charm. I actually enjoy being there the most in the summer when the students are gone.
But honestly, a lot of these comments just feed into the whole “little brother” mindset that some fans of other colleges in the state suffer from. I say fans and not alumni because usually the most ridiculous OM or State fans never stepped foot in a classroom at either school. I don’t think OM is better than the other schools in the state, but some of the comments really reinforce the perception of an inferiority complex among some folks. Get some help and focus more time focusing on your own school versus obsessing with your rivals. You may be able to fix your own problems that way. Plus, it's really a sad look.
