Update: Meeting is supposed to take place at noon.
We don't know what's happening but something's happening. Baton Rouge talk show host Matthew Moscona reported Ole Miss Head Football Coach Lane Kiffin and Athletic Director Keith Carter are supposed to meet at 8:15 this morning.
Needless to say, the message boards are blowing up with all manners of speculation. Hushed and grim, Mississippi turned painful eyes towards the far away little town of Oxford and a page of sports history waits for days as three states come to death grips in the rolling hills of north Mississippi.
Stay tuned.
Update: Shane Matthews said on his podcast this morning (so take it for what it's worth) that Kiffin wanted Florida but good ole Scott Strickland screwed things up over one issue. Coach K wanted to hire his own General Manager while Strickland wanted to keep the current one on board. LSU supposedly said Coach K will have total control over his own staff.

If I'm Lane I'm staying in Oxford, where he is bigger than the program, but there's no easier place to win a natty than in BR. Two of the dumbest coaches ever, Les Miles and Special Ed, won nattys there. In the end, I think he stays, he loves attention though, so not surprised he's milking this for all it's worth.
That's some second paragraph you wrote there, Fish.
It doesn't hurt to talk...albeit it's a distraction for the team. It may inspire OM to sweeten the pot where he is.
I am a lifelong supporter of Ole Miss, its sports teams, its mission and, until now Lane Kiffen. This annual, "is he staying or is he going" is getting old. Here we are on the cusp of an opportunity for the SEC championship, and the playoff games for a national title and Kiffen is behaving like a flirtatious junior high cheerleader. My mood has shifted significantly in the last 48 hours and especially with the report that his family was hosted to a "see all" by LSU. He is in a meeting today with the AD, and, personally, I hope they encourage him to "get the hell our of Oxford". I am sick and tired of this game. I'd rather have a respectful program with an honorable man at its helm that wins 60% of its games than this foolishness. Hit the road Jack, meaning Lane Kiffen, and good riddance.
Blame the system. When the idiots placed early signing and transfer portal in December and January, they guaranteed this would happen. No one likes coaches leaving schools during playoff runs. Tulane and another school are facing the same dilemma. However, if you finish the playoffs and then leave, you have lost your signing class and the portal for the most part. This will happen again next year unless things change. Gone of the days of firing coaches after the season. Good job, NCAA, good job.
Feel bad for Ole Miss fans, really do, because they have suffered for many many moons and what has been accomplished this year has been fun to see. They don't deserve this. They deserve to make an honest run in the playoffs.
100 % agree with 8:35. I would rather have a coach that wants to be there and not one who makes a message board pawn of the Ole Miss job. Goodbye Lane. Thanks for the memories.
MS State fan here. I agree, all of this end of season drama is complete BS and takes away from the players and the fans. They need to change some stuff around. The NCAA loves making rules. I would say they need to change the signing day date, make a rule that coaching talks can't happen until the talks can't happen until the respective schools have ended their seasons. At this point, I loathe the coaching carousel as much as the NIL at this point.
Spot on KF!
Remember when OM laughed at State when Mullen was always flirting?
What goes around, comes around.
I'm hearing that Sylvester Croom would love to come to Oxford.
Lane told me he was staying.
Apparently Mr. Kiffin hasn't learned anything.
One day maybe one of our 2 SEC Universities will find a successful football coach who has more loyalty to Mississippi than they have for money. We need a Bear Bryant.
Just say the obvious out loud. Ole Miss is a stepping stool job for something better. You have to accept it. They can only make noise, nothing further. In the days of NIL (and before), you can only go so far. There are probably 10 programs that can win a Natty now a days. Mississippi doesn’t have one of those schools.
If you want a list in no particular order: TAMU, Texas, UGA, BAMA, LSU, TN, Florida, Ohio State, and Michigan.
Outside looking in Penn State, USC (not with 2 NFL teams), FSU, and Miami.
You can make an argument for a few other schools to be outside (Arkansas if Walton and Jones step up huge).
It’ll take deep pockets and great scouting/evaluating talent, to sniff the playoffs, let alone a favorite for a Bye. Mississippi just doesn’t have the pockets, even if they are ahead of the game.
Enjoy the ride, support the team within reason. Accept your role.
List criteria - clear dominant program in state (split in MS, TX can support 2); deep financial pockets.
I think he may stay. Or, he may leave.
to all the beautiful people of the SEC who have posted comments here, tell me, how much money do you make obsessing over a pretty boy coach who will be a nobody in a few years?
remember your mortgage payment and your kids tuition are due on the 1st of december.
and dont forget your 1300$ note on that big ram pickup.
-University of Mississippi Bulldogs
-120,000 seat stadium just north of Canton
-Colors won’t matter because we’ll be winning NC’s
-Starkville and Oxford are now remote campuses
Problems solved!
Lane should stay at Ole Miss to coach the team through the playoffs. You only get so many shots to make the playoffs, especially since the SEC is going to 9 games next year and the CFP Playoff committee has shown no evidence at this point that SOS will ever be valued. Besides, LSU and FL will both being looking for coaches again in 3 to 5 seasons as they haven't woken up to what time it is in this current iteration of college football and 9-3 and 10-2 seasons are going to get you fired there. And, looking at those next 3 SEC schedules for both LSU and FL, you are absolutely losing a minimum of 2, maybe 3 games each season and that isn't considering their non-conference schedules.
The best thing would be for OM, LSU and Florida to tell Kiffin to buzz off
"Hey boss, I'm going to be out tomorrow to go for a job interview at a competing company. Cool?"
Not sure that would go over well. Only in sports, I guess.
Lane needs a natty so off to lsu just like his pal
Coach O who told Lane that potato logs at a chevron in Oxford are the bomb!! Is that still true
The money in college and all sports is obscene. No college coach is work 7 figure salary and most not 6 figure salary. This prostitution of young men and women for sports by educational institutions must stop. Most coaches are nothing more than pimps, that includes Lane Kiffin. You can't blame him, everybody, but small part of the US population and me, wants some and willing play to take part in the orgy of college sports. The only way to weed this out is limits at every level; no obscene salaries, player contributions, donations and support payments. Also ticket prices should be fixed at reasonable amount, but the above changes might solve that issue.
Lane is waiting for Alabama to open up.
"Lane needs a natty so off to lsu just like his pal
Coach O" You have to actually get into the playoffs to win a natty and good luck getting in the playoffs with LSU's SEC schedule over the next 3-4 seasons.
Prostitution and orgies? I'M IN! Go back to playing the trumpet, nerd.
