Trash Talk: Showdown on April 17

The Jackson City Council and Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba are going to have a showdown in Hinds County Chancery Court over the garbage contract.  It is not known yet if the loser will have to leave town or if there is a time limit.

The law and several courts have stated the Mayor has the duty to present a contract to the City Council for approval.  The City Council can only approve the contract.  It has no power to negotiation or choose a vendor.  The Mayor took advantage of this facet of the law to refuse to submit a contract for garbage services for any company but Richard's Disposal of New Orleans even though the Council rejected a Richard's Disposal contract several times.

The Council asked the Court to declare the Mayor is derelict in his duty and grant the Council the power to select another vendor besides Richard's Disposal.  All Hinds County Chancellors recused themselves.  The Mississippi Supreme Court appointed Special Chancellor David Clark to hear the case.

Chancellor Clark scheduled a hearing for April 17.

April 17 is another week and half away, those crawfish shells and leftover Easter eggs gone be stanking pretty bad by then!

Thank you Kingfish for continuing to speak truth-to-power. It is desperately needed in Jackson and has nothing to do with race or partisanship. We have a Mayor who believes he can operate above the law. The incompetence is staggering.

No way the Council punts on Monday with this hearing scheduled. Since he is such a knowledgeable barrister Mayor Failure should have no problem arguing his position on his own.

This mayor must like getting spanked in court

How long will this clown show go on?

Krusatyr said...

Deranged and 'derelict', he not only avoids but despises his duty.
BTW: What toxins go airborne if we burn our garbage with all the plastic packaging in it?

I understand Vince McMahon has swooped in and taken the match over. It's reported it will be a 6-person battle royal, steel cage match, with no holds barred, and the last person standing.

It will be on Peacock pay-per-view, and ESPN radio carrying the match. Vinny Mac said the garbage question will be settled. Be there.

Meanwhile, Waste Management has said it has no interest in 'servicing' the Radical New City and who the hell can blame them?

People are tired of smelling shit-water in their sinks and will soon be tired of the stank of garbage in their carports. This man is insane.

If you think meeting before a judge will make a rat's ass, think again.

How many Jackson taxpayers have to deliver their garbage to the mayor's block before it's a real crisis?

"Jackson Trifecta": No water, no garbage, followed by a 'jacking.

This asshat of a mayor has put his ego ahead of his constituents so many times, it's getting hard to keep track. $345k in taxpayer monies wasted so far on the legal costs associated with the actions of a sociopath. Enough! GTFO

Thank you to the 4 councilpersons who are holding firm and refusing to enable the mayor's corruption. I live in south Jackson and I'll happily drive my trash to the Byram landfill if it means my tax dollars aren't being laundered by Richard's Disposal in order to fund the mayor's Mercedes Benz's (plural) and luxury travel expenses.

Waste Management did a fine job for over 20 years, until the mayor shit in the milk bucket 2 years ago. He's been doing it ever since like a toddler that isn't potty trained.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a favorable court decision so the adults in the room (majority of council members) can stop the mayor's ridiculous antics and move forward for the best interest of the people.

Someone needs to cause Virgi to experience an epiphany and get her mind right so evil Lil Choke has only two Council members in his pocket. Her husband is an accomplished CPA, a partner in a well established accounting firm. As mentioned elsewhere on this site, her son is a talented chef and restaurateur. How does she get all the bad genes?

So ... how this gonna work out if there is no backup vendor... ugh ... my family does not want to pay for the large garbage cans.....

Kingfish said...

She sold out for his support on the CID

Anonymous said...

Y’all enjoy your trips to the landfill or local dumpster. My trash is picked up twice a week in Madison and I bought my own can. Y’all are so screwed

Anonymous said...

Jackson won't make it to April 17.

Ashby stay strong. Don’t dare bend

We loves our WM here in Madison the City. Friendly crew who wave; gently return container to sidewalk; pick up any trash that falls on the ground; never miss a day.

It must suck being one of Prince Chowke's "subjects."

Anonymous said...

Not everybody in Madison has sidewalks and WM never has stood my garbage can upright. And whattabout the time WM apologized when they were caught dumping the recyclables at the landfill just like the regular garbage. They were running one truck behind the other, the second one contracted to pick up recyclables.

Sure, @5:34, people are tired of smelling shit-water in their sinks, and they’ll soon be tired of the stench of garbage in their carports. But the average Jackson voter casts his ballot based on race. Mayor Labumbler, then, will hold the office as long as he wants his name on the ballot.

The fruit of evil is chaos, disorder and confusion.

While I am hoping the City Council wins on the 17th, not sure the issue is legally framed properly. It seems the Council should have filed for a writ of mandamus where the court could direct the Mayor to present an alternative contract. Then, if he doesn’t, it is contempt of court. As the matter stands, it seems the court can simply say “separation of powers” prevents the relief the Council seeks.

Horrible mayor, an outfoxed city council and third string legal counsel all combine to screw the citizens while getting paid. Sad times in the Capital City.

Kingfish said...

Third string? Scanlon is a pretty good lawyer.

9:00, I am a Jackson resident and just like virtually all of the other Jackson residents on this blog, did not vote for Chokwe and do not support him. For various reasons, though not always by choice, we still live here. Your smug, condescending comments are not reaching many Chokwe supporters on this blog, and are certainly not constructive, so please keep it civil.

I’ve seen a lot of comments along the lines that we deserve what we have since we voted Chokwe in. That’s like me saying you deserve Biden, even though I’m guessing you didn’t vote for him.

Lighten up, dude

Anonymous said...

As usual, the comments are just personal attacks.
No one here seems interested in getting efficient garbage collection.
That certainly included the THREE not FOUR ( the coward abstained), who are on the council.
They haven't bothered to LEARN how to DO THEIR JOB part of which is to accurately INFORM those they represent of the FACTS.
Yes, WM is very entrenched in MS politics. No others need bid ever!
Indeed, the number of bids for ANY Mississippi government contract continues to have fewer bidders every time.

Anonymous said...

I have to say Labamba did fulfill his promise to make Jackson the most radical city on the planet.

Anonymous said...

9:18, you won me over with the all caps. Nothing says you're serious like that.

Seems three plus the coward that abstained knew their job pretty well. The mayor's council meeting called to insure that two were out of town didn't make a quorum and his minority on the council couldn't vote Richards in. The Supreme Court seems to think they know their job pretty well as they ruled in their favor.

Perhaps, you should ask the mayor to learn his job. No 911, no JPD service to Fondren and Belhaven, JFD worried about water pressure and the ability to fight fires, cratered streets, water when available is seldom potable and had to be taken over by the feds, cannot figure out how to read a water meter like any podunk town of 4k can, highest per capita murder rate in the country, and now trash piling up in the streets because he failed to, as required by law, bring another vendor before the council.

He can print a graphic telling you how long the RFP process takes, but somehow the expiration of the emergency contract managed to sneak up on him?

I guess we can expect the Poor People's Campaign to stage a rally in front of city hall any day now. Or do we only do that when white supremacist state steps in to fix the mayor's mistakes? Mayor's got a lot of nerve calling them racist when he denies police protection, running water, and basic sanitation service to over 100k black Jacksonians.

You were right, though. There are cowards on the council. The ones that keep voting with him because they didn't learn their jobs.

KF, 9 a here. Agree that Scanlon is top-notch. The third string was a general reference to lawyers on both sides and the city attorney’s office. I humbly accept the rebuke on lumping Scanlon in with the lot.

9:18, I’m not sure how you took my comments as smug, condescending or attempting to reach Chokwe supports. I called the guy horrible and never said the citizens deserve him. It seems you are confused or emotional.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if the Lumumbas are personally schlepping their garbage over to the metro center? Oh wait, that is a job given to their JPD palace guard.

Anonymous said...

Your smug, condescending comments are not reaching many Chokwe supporters on this blog ...

Since your self-disclosure revealed you are not one how would you know?

Anonymous said...

No one here seems interested in getting efficient garbage collection.

Define efficient?

If you truly want efficient then you don't want RDI. With just efficiency in mind, RDI is arguably the least efficient of the three vendors who responded to the RFP.

As for Lumumba, by nearly every measure he's least efficient Jackson Mayor since 1984.

Anonymous said...

He can print a graphic telling you how long the RFP process takes ...

[AND] a graphic instructing us stupid citizens how to manage and bag our f'ing garbage.

Thanks Mayor Moron. Couldn't get it done without you!

Anonymous said...

10:08, I agree, except about the 3 cowards on city council. They're not cowards; they're simply self-serving, just like the mayor. They sold their votes in order to get something.

Virgi sold out for the mayor's support on the cid. We don't know what the other two sold out for, but I strongly suspect they've been promised a share of the dirty money.

One thing's for sure, if the mayor is successful in getting Richard's this contract, a lot of people will be watching the money trail VERY closely, and following where it goes.

Anonymous said...

Me thinks Virgi's bigger fear KF is that Lumumba will hijack the CID collections and force a court fight to get the $$$ back.

Kingfish said...

he got them elected. Look at Lee. Doesn't hold a steady job (Where has she worked longer than a year or two). Lives at home with the folks. Mayor backed her election. Mayor got Grizzell elected. His brother is deputy chief and we know the Mayor hand-picks the Command Staff.

No need to wait till April 17. This is an urgent matter. The Chancellor has the power to act faster and stronger.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
