Waaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

Yet another person got mad because she didn't like a restaurant and of course, went running to you know where to trash the restaurant.

Hmmm...... does this mean the customer was not going to tip at all? Here is a little clue for such customers: Restaurants or bars that impose mandatory tips usually do it because the customers don't tip the waitresses.  No tips means no staff.  There are quite a few extinct restaurants in Jackson would that is one reason they closed if the buildings could speak.

The Facebook post is the latest in a disturbing trend in modern society.  If someone experienced a problem with a restaurant, he usually complained to management.  If management is competent, it usually tries to satisfy the customer.  However, we now live in the age of social media where every grievance or grudge is empowered.  Such posts are appearing on social media more frequently.

A woman complained on Facebook that a restaurant reluctantly allowed her to eat because she was in scrubs.  The establishment had a dress code and scrubs were not on the list.  She probably had a legitimate gripe about the restaurant but instead of just leaving it with management, you guessed it, she ran to social media to broadcast the experience even though, yes, she was served.

Remember Trooper Hushpuppy? The rookie acted a fool at a Clinton restaurant but instead of leaving it alone, mommy had to make up a story and post it on Facebook.  The owner was in tears as he suffered abusive comments on Facebook because she said he discriminated against her brat because he was a cop.  Thankfully JJ investigated and reported the real story.

Yours truly was recently in one restaurant that just happens to have a dress code.  A family entered and wanted a table.  The father was wearing bright red warmups and a baseball cap.  The staff said it violated the dress code.  The man was pretty mad about it but he left.  However, another Karen had attempted to dine at the establishment a few weeks earlier with her high school daughter.  The kid (who doesn't look like a kid) who just happened to be wearing something that was banned by the dress code.  You know the rest of the story.  They went to Facebook and commenced to trashing the owner.

Then there was Saltine.  A black girl from Atlanta completely trashed the popular restaurant on Facebook.  The post got thousands of views and hundreds of comments.  However, Saltine did something smart. It allowed some "influencers" to see the video and it was immediately clear who was lying.  She was drunk, going in the bathroom to do drugs, and generally making a fool of herself.  It was a black manager who threw her out but that didn't stop her from screaming racism as well.    Earlier post.

The customers in question could speak to the manager/owner or simply said they weren't bringing back their business.  They instead ran to Facebook and go to war in the hope their post will be seen by more than a few people, thus hurting the business.  If a restaurant is offering crap service, don't worry, the market will take care of it as it always does.  The Daquiri Shop is probably not a fan of this website right now but it has the same right as any other business to be free of revenge reviews.

Unfortunately, more than a few restaurant owners have complained to yours truly how they fear being at the mercy of social media.  They can do everything right but all it takes is one drunk or spoiled brat to make up a story and boom! There goes their business after years, maybe decades, of sweat and sacrifice.  Most of the time, there is another side to the story of such complaints, usually supported by video.  However, restaurants are so fearful of bad publicity, they often turn the other cheek and hope the attention fades away.  Social media is indeed a double-edged sword.

Pay your employees. Period.

Totally correct but the way this is written it comes off as if you have just discovered social media. “Look what people are doing now on Facebook these days!”

Anonymous said...

I mean looking at the ticket, you'd think this is a to-go order. I still leave a little something for my to-go orders but not a mandatory 18%. So let's ask the commenters, what do y'all normally tip for your to-go orders?

Anonymous said...

Sorry but you're wrong on this one KF. She didn't post saying "Close this place down" or "No one go here". She had an experience in a restaurant that's open to the public and she posted about it on a public forum. Is there some accusation that she made this up or photoshopped the receipt?

Frankly, she could have gone to the management to complain and maybe resolved it for herself... or she could post it online so management will take the action they should have done to begin with if they don't want the negative press and fix the issue for everyone.

Oh, and no, mandatory tips on a small to go order are NOT cool by me. A tip is a recognition of good service. I HATE the fact that they have become mandatory or that they're asked for before you even have the chance to receive any service. How about not calling it a "TIP" and just label it as a "DONATION" because that's what it is if you're asking people for it without any service associated with it.

If restaurants can't keep employees because they can't pay them enough on their own and rely on customers making donations, then they need to shut down and come out with better food or a better concept.

I'm old and don't like change, but you can't make the world stop spinning. Adapt and survive or don't. If you couldn't figure out how to make your business profitable while paying your employees competitive salaries, move over and make way for someone who can. Just because your grandfather was a good business man and started a nice restaurant fifty years ago, that doesn't entitle you to keep running it if you can't compete.

Government subsidies are the reason restaurants can't keep employees, not lack of donations from customers.

Everything you said is true. Management should take care of customer issues when brought to their attention. Sadly, though, most managers nowadays could care less about a customer's issues. Most have no management experience, and those that do have no authority to make things right.
No, I've never trashed a restaurant on social media, and never will. I let my feet and my dollars do my talking. The hardest thing nowadays is finding a business anywhere that appears to appreciate good customers.

I get it. I run a business (not food service). It pisses me off when a customer trashes the business on social media by using inaccuracies or erroneous information. I have no problem being criticized with the truth. If I'm wrong, feel free to call me out. But to criticize me with lies and falsehoods is what makes me angry.

Why are you protecting this person’s identity? Wasn’t it a public post?

Anonymous said...

I say just fold the so called mandatory tip, which really doesn't exist, into the price of the products. Tips are not required by law, but are up to the customer based on service.

I loathe the people that bash restaurants online and often put very little value on such ranting. I sympathize with the very difficult position of business owners and the lack of decent work force.

Heck, I recently took the time to praise a chain location on FB that provided exceptional service. I also tipped the server handsomely. It was deserved, and I refuse to accept that only the bad experiences should be posted about.

But these to-go orders with a tip built in, I tend to agree with this person in that the practice is just wrong.

The IRS assumes that wait staff are getting tips and thus taxes them, even if they aren't reaching the assumed level of tips.

From now on whenever I see a Facebook complaint about a place of business, I immediately will plan to patronize said business.

When a leftist starts whining about something, I generally will like it.

wait a minute, you can get daiquiris to go???

Those that scream the loudest about paying their employees are the first to ditch eating out when prices rise too high.

Anonymous said...

You posted:

"A black girl from Atlanta completely trashed the popular restaurant"

You go further:

"that didn't stop her from screaming racism as well."

A girl is a child or adolescent. Children and adolescents do not travel from Atlanta to go to Saltines.

Black women and young ladies are constantly referred to as girls; regardless of their age, profession and stance in life and this is racism.

You should take a course or racism and sexism.

What’s wrong Kingfish? Lol.

Anybody willing to pay $16 each for one of their Daquaris shouldn't be bitching about a gratuity! Granted, 18% on a take-out order is not generally justified, but at $11/slice of pizza and $16/drink - the fact that the tip is also ridiculous shouldn't be a surprise.

But realizing the high rent district where this fine establishment is located along with the late night entertainment, guess its a worthwhile investment.

Many years ago, I had to work on a project in Miami and found out that many of the restaurants added an automatic 15% tip to meals. The service was terrible because the wait staff knew whatever they did or didn't do, they were guaranteed that tip. There was even a line to add an additional gratuity.

Anonymous said...

I tip 20% across the board. To go or not.

Anonymous said...

Social Media is an unlevel playing field. They are immured to slander!
The government needs to repel section 8, NOW!

Anonymous said...

It does not matter how she deserved to be treated. White females who are adults are not referred to as girls. This is wrong.

I am the aunt of one of the owners of the Downtown Daiquiri Shop. I often read your posts. They probably do to. Americans are not as White and Black as we think they are. We often run together.

I often find your blog enjoyable and educational. I find black girl as an offensive term. I think you are intelligent enough to understand.

Restaurants have the same “right of refusals “ as other business. You don’t want some red neck that’s been working all day doing whatever (now I covered myself with that “whatever”) who stinks from sweat and dirt because I KNOW I DO! But I have enough upbringing to “class up a bit” before I go to a public place to dine with my family. Carhartts can go either way but don’t wear them to a nice place after working on a job site. Common sense prevails in all situations. DO NOT wear a cap or hat of any sort in a dining establishment!!! Manners rule! I’m blue collar, was raised blue collar but had a strong set of parents who believed in “making sure you don’t embarrass your upbringing”. We seriously need to go back to that. As I said, I’m blue collar and I enjoy going out
To eat with my family and making sure I do not embarrass them in any way fashion or form since they all have college degrees. It’s a privilege to be able to go to a nice establishment, NOT A RIGHT! By the way, I make more than most college graduates but that doesn’t give me a right to shove uncouth into those around me. It’s how I was brought up.

I tip 15% for table service, unless it's a small bill, then 20-25%. I never tip for handing an order out the take-out window or bringing my order in a bag from the kitchen to the cashier area. Why would someone pay $11.00 per slice for pizza and $16.00 each for daiquiris? Even at 3am? Maybe in Aspen or NYC.

Anonymous said...

Fuck you, Kingfish. The bottom line in this discussion is this: No establishment should, as a matter of course, tack on any routine, mandatory or standard tip, service charge or amount beyond the published menu price plus applicable tax....UNLESS....customers are clearly advised by notice appearing either on the menu or the marquis or the terlet door.

That has absolutely not one fucking thing to do with anything. But it's cool that you could point it out while boiling lentils in Fondren.

I always just blow or hack some snot in their food and smile as they eat it.

This looks like a to go order. Who in the world is tipping for a to go order? That’s like tipping someone at McDonald’s for handing you the bag at the drive thru.

Wait, let me get this straight? White women of adult age are never called girls? On what planet? Look planet Woke is a sad sad place to live.

Your point is not lost on the use of 'girls' and black women. Yet, in this case, you just sound like you want to find racism in everything and anything.

It must be hard staying butt hurt all the time? I've got to go and ask my wife, 'What are she and the girls doing tonight?" She's going out with adult-aged white women, but that's how we talk.

The service has to be BAD for me to tip less than 20%. It’s usually 25%. That’s how I was raised and how I’m raising my kids.

Great comments. The law in Mississippi is clear: a guest can legally refuse to pay an autograt. It does not matter if it is disclosed by the establishment. Having said that if people tipped more consistently this would obviously be a non-issue.

Just knew someone would bring race into it. Thanks for not disappointing me. Half the social media posts I referred to were made by blacks, the other half by whites. I didn't mention their race because it had nothing to do with anything. The only time I mentioned it was when a female (does that satisfy you?) threw race into it in an effort to ruin not just the restaurant BUT also a manager who was black as well. Of course, you don't defend the poor manager who was having to deal with an out of control patron who was doing recreational substances in the bathroom and was smeared for his efforts but instead slam me for calling her out. You had no problem, I bet, with her throwing race into it. Well, congratulations, you achieved your gotcha, now go have fun with it. I'm not apologizing nor backing down from what was written.

7:46 WTF is an autograt???

One of the funniest things I have ever heard is someone getting a bill and asking the waiter “who ordered the gratuity, we didn’t order no damn gratuity”.

Please post the name of a local eatery who has a dress code. I will patronize them often. There are nice places around the metro that I would love to go to, sans the post workout, fresh out of bed dress code that I have to eat with.

Anonymous said...

KF - when did downtown get a Togo cup ordinance?

Anonymous said...

Same thing happed to me at Babalu today. Ordered take out and they added a gratuity fee like almost 10 bucks! Then had the nerve to add a line for additional tip. I hope that automatic fee goes to the servers because they weren’t getting an additional dime out of me. Is it inflation causing this? Btw KF, I absolutely believe in tips. However, it should be my choice. If the service is terrible, I see no need to show “gratitude”.

Anonymous said...

A slice of good NYC pizza is $3.14. A daiquiri at even a Manhattan place, in the tourist zone, is 13 bucks or less. The prices and gratuity for this in Jackson are an outrage. Don't blame this person. 68 bucks for two slices and two drinks? This is as bad as some "top of the line" steak houses where you can get a better ribeye in the City for less than Jackistan or Bricktown.

Curbside and delivery have greatly increased revenues for businesses, without a corresponding increase in overhead. The bums of places that use delivery have NOT increased wages in concert in many cases.

Pay your employees fairly and don't gouge customers if you want compliments instead of complaints.

5:59 You want to repeal Section 8.

What is Section 8?

I have a small business but don’t advertise on Facebook because I don’t want the vitriol. Not saying this person did that but we live a day when anonymous posters attack with impunity. See this thread for example.

Do they order takers at Primos and Newk’s expect 20%? You even have to make your own drink. Yet McDonalds does the same and no one tips there… and they even hand you a drink

I agree that tips should be for extraordinary service, like a large group or messy youngsters, etc. However, the staff should be paid appropriately.

I have lived in six countries and tipping is an American thing. For instance, in Italy they pay their restaurant staff well and health benefits are required. Tipping often times is considered an insult.

@ 7:46 - "The law in Mississippi is clear: a guest can legally refuse to pay an autograt. It does not matter if it is disclosed by the establishment."

Can you cite the statute, case, etc.?

Kingfish said...

Such daquiris can cost more if you start adding shots to them. Can easily boost the price up to $20 or $30.

I've had it. Won't be viewing JJ anymore, not that you'll miss me. Allowing a person to post "fuck" is bad enough, but today I saw "motherfucker". If you can't control this, or perhaps don't want to, well, I have no time for classless behavior. Over and out for good.

Back when I worked in the restaurant biz, to-go orders were handled by the servers.

That meant you had to neglect your in-store customers while you assembled and checked a customer's to-go order and handled the payment. Tips were sporadic on to-go orders -- many customers seemed unaware that the person handling their order was making well below minimum wage and relying on tips.

Many of us avoided handling to-go orders for that reason. I can see where a mandatory gratuity on to-go orders would make sense if the restaurant is using tipped servers to handle them.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
