Madison Opts Out of Medical Marijuana

Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler issued the following statement.

Tonight the City of Madison unanimously opted out of the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Act. Our community is our priority. The limitations over our zoning authority, the waiver to allow dispensaries and grow facilities closer to our churches, schools and daycares without notice to the public, and the increased danger to our first responders are only some of the factors that guided our decision.

Ridgeland, Gluckstadt, Madison, and Brandon have opted out of allowing medical marijuana operations to take place. The deadline for opting out is May 3.

Clinton opted out as well on a 5-2 vote.

The WASPs of Madison prefer Pinot Grigio anyway

Anonymous said...

That's ok. We have our production plant almost completed up here in Canton. We'll be glad to help out any folks from those areas mentioned. Just because they opted out doesn't mean you can't use medical marijuana in those areas.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully the citizens can overrule this. What affect does medical marajuana have on first responders? I'm tired of bureaucrats telling us what we can and can't do.

TY!

Mary has bigger balls than any male in Mississippi politics.

As if Madison residents can’t get all the pot and opioids they want today. MC students routinely go to the ER from the crap they vape in the bathrooms. Thanks for protecting us Mary.

Plenty of medical pot will be smoked in Madison. Plenty on un-medical pot is smoked there already. Now, Canton and Jackson will reap the jobs and taxes.

"...Jackson will reap jobs and taxes."

Jackson reaps the whirlwind of death regardless, but mj is no economic plus after mental and cultural costs are subtracted.

Anonymous said...

Didn’t she get all the zoning bs she cried about when she tried to overturn the vote of the people.

Anonymous said...

Just pausing the inevitable.

No surprise here

The movie Reefer Madness was spot on. Keep that poison out of Madison the City.

Anonymous said...

Well shit! Now madison folks have to drive to Brandon, and Brandon folks to Madison, to get our weed.

Anonymous said...

I'm signing the petition, as will the tenants at my 27 rental homes in Madison.

She should ban liquor and opioids from being sold in her kingdom while she’s at it. I’m not a fan of having cigarettes or other tobacco products either, maybe she can start her own little prohibition. Come to think of it, the pastors and priests sure have done a number on the youth, maybe they can be banned from being within close proximity of schools and daycares. Someone has to protect these childrens and the queen knows what’s best for all.

Anonymous said...

Good. The class stays in Madison. Losers can smoke that trash in their trailers elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

@10:08 @ 10:42
But y’all are OK with the mental and cultural costs of alcohol? Hypocrites!

Anonymous said...

I thought we voted to approve marijuana? Does the rule of law not apply any more?

Anonymous said...

I was expecting this from Madison. The perfect place for the marijuana shops is in Jackson because it reeks of Lumumba values. Put the marijuana shops and vape shops close to that big bar on County Line that the kiddie Mayor likes so much. Get the strip clubs to move up there and you have a veritable Lumumba Las Vegas. Lumumba values.

Anonymous said...

Um, you can keep the growing facilities and the store fronts out of Madison the City, but I can smoke it all day long in Madison the City as long as I have my little card. Nothing you can do about that.

Anonymous said...

Good.

You losers that want legal weed realize that there is no such thing as “medical marijuana”, right? That like calling vodka “medical booze”, There is no FDA approval.

Love it when weed advocates think it’s some sort of wonder drug that will “cure” everything from epilepsy to their obesity.

Smoke it up, but you will still have seizures and still be fat.

Anonymous said...

Anyone that drinks alcohol and opposes medical marijuana is a hypocrite. Plain and simple. Most of the people that knock it know absolutely NOTHING about it and damn sure have never tried it. What a bunch of sad people.

Anonymous said...

5:17, I plan to smoke my first one in my front yard in Cypress Lake. No trailers here.

Anonymous said...

5:17, people who truly have class don't disparage people in lesser living conditions. People with class are above that.

You can take the boy out of South Jackson, but just because he migrates to Madison doesn't mean you can take the South Jackson out of the boy. You should represent your town better than that.

Anonymous said...

Mary can't even keep high schoolers from vaping marijuana during the school day. This is just for appearances.

Anonymous said...

Alerted Madison authorities including MPD that the pot trade's sometimes media Major Domo Melvin Robinson is one of Lumumba's Jackson payroll PR hacks. Won't be no anonymity for Robinson sob-storying about his concern for the 'patients' up here.

Anonymous said...

Better have that dope card in your possession at all times and hope that NO ONE saw you pass that joint to anyone else. Phone cameras are a wonderful thing.

Anonymous said...

This is a story how ? Weed smokers gonna smoke no matter what this Ol Gal does. Just another pandering elected doing pandering things. It's not gonna stop what has already been passed.

Anonymous said...

@7:27 AM You stoners getting withdrawal symptoms already? Light up in your yard and you will be arrested. It must be used indoors, loser.

Anonymous said...

@5:24

As my all-time favorite comedian, Bill Hicks(RIP) said? "Alcohol and cigarettes? GOOD drugs! TAXABLE drugs!"

Anonymous said...

7:22 AM are you sure about that? I think I will gain less weight toking a joint vs. slamming a 40oz Colt 45.

Anonymous said...

Med maryjane actually gives Madison police more reasons to ask questions, not less.

Anonymous said...

reefer madness! what a great movie!

seriously, all someone will have to do is drive to jackson and get it. it's not going to stop anything.

Anonymous said...

"Hopefully the citizens can overrule this." Where the hell have you been?

Anonymous said...

It's going about as expected. We will have Pot Apartheid in Mississippi. White conservative areas are saying no no no and black liberal areas are saying more more more.

I really think people in general are confusing “medical marijuana” with “recreational marijuana” and envision anyone walking around smoking weed. But from what I understand, you’ll need a prescription from your doctor for a chronic condition in order to make an across-the- counter purchase. There are several states that have approved “recreational use” and that where you’ll find it available to the general public. For any municipality to ban a medical marijuana grower or dispensary Is doing a disservice to their citizens who could actually benefit, or at least get some temporary relief, per a doctor’s approval, from whatever they are coping with. But I also understand perception and any areas with a marijuana ban is perhaps seeking a perception of utopia where all is good and don’t bother to purchase or light up a joint in this jurisdiction.

Anonymous said...

10:13, “medical marijuana” is a joke. Anyone who wants a “prescription” will find a “doctor” to write them one. I’d submit that 99% of this legal weed will be smoked or ingested by losers looking to get high and avoid the responsibilities of life.

Far cry from the cancer patient looking for relief (which I’m all for by the way—it’s just not the reality).

Anonymous said...

Nobody is confused 10:13. Medical pot is a trojan horse to achieve legalized pot.

Anonymous said...

9:03, you are clearly wrong. Read for yourself. My yard is not a public place as defined in the bill. But if you want to go raid the backyards of 75 year old cancer patients......

Sure would hate for losers with cancer or uncontrollable seizures to disgrace the great brick city with their illnesses. Only opiate champs and alcoholics are allowed to buy their drugs in her majesty’s kingdom.

So that's every town in Madison County (w/ the exception of Canton :-) )
and Brandon
When do the city officials of Pearl and Flowood meet next?
And Hinds County - Any word from Byram, Terry, and Clinton?

Anonymous said...

Why did we vote on the marijuana legislation only to have our plurality overturned by her highness the mayor. Why did we waste the time and the money to have this plurality vote thrown out. By the way, I remember standing in the voting line for two hours when this was placed on the ballot. I can only assume the long delays were caused by the voters not expecting and not aware of the long, somewhat confusing two amendments on the ballot.

Anonymous said...

What is Pearl, Richland, and Florence doing?
What about Reservoir in Rankin? Will they be under Brandon or PRVWSD?

Anonymous said...

Why did we waste the time and the money to have this plurality vote thrown out.

Seriously doubt you wasted $1 considering the effort was funded by basically one person.

A few carpetbaggers will soon be pushing these petitions in Madison, while bloviating their "medical" party-line, but it is really about the profits, not medicine.

They will likely obtain sufficient valid signature to get it on the ballot, but it is clear that the majority of Madison the City residents don't want those businesses here.

The bottom line is that these carpetbaggers will cost the Madison taxpayers thousands of dollars for a special election that will fail.

Go home carpetbaggers.

Betcha the majority of Madison residents voted FOR statewife pot...but just dont want the retail aspects in THEIR city.

Classic NIMBY.

Now they get to smoke the goods bought in Jxn.

Nice play.

nO nO nO .........Mary opted out. Mary. And the fact many here are surprised is downright funny.

@1:09 - you can blame the queen for not respecting the vote of the people in the first place. You should vote out that democracy hating bag of trash when the citizens get the chance to vote on the already approved medical program.

California Marijuana Tax Boon that NEVER Materialized & CAUSED more ILLEGAL Cartel Weed Produced.

High California Taxes (45%+ $10s of 1000s in permit costs)...Legalized Recreational Weed backfired. The Cartels moved in, not enough resources to combat illegal grow farms. Most of the vast illegal Weed grown in California is sent to the other states because of higher LEGAL prices. One Sheriff in the California EMERALD TRIANGLE on 60 minutes said they could cut down 1000 plants one week, & they would be replanted the next week. Sheriff said it was almost impossible to get a conviction on Weed Growing. So he had gotten inventive & began using the Water & Evironmental Laws to get Convictions for illegal farms. The $1/2 billion in taxes California Weed Proponents promised never came, instead more illegal untaxed weed & LE stops less than 10% of it.

There are about 7 people in the state that really give a crap about this. 3 or 4 hate Joel and 3 or 4 really support the cause. And all 7 or 8 of them post incessantly about it. It is a non-event. If you want medical pot, you can get it. You can already get it now. The rest is semantics and appearances. Pot is as common in Madison as pineapples.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.

Dr. Heddy Matthias and Lori Gregory will face off in the undercard dueling with dangling participles and other um, devices.
