Update: 12:50 PM: Supporter just walked up an placed a McDaniel for U.S. Senate sign on the podium as Mr. McDaniel spoke. Mr. McDaniel said "I guess the cat's out of the bag, now let's talk about the bag."
State Senator Chris McDaniel is addressing a crowd right now at Jones Junior College. He is expected to announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate. Watch below.
Senator Roger Wicker and his campaign manager Justin Brasell issued these statements:
From Senator Roger Wicker:Gayle and I are looking forward to this campaign and sharing my record of successfully fighting to reduce job-killing regulations, confirm conservative judges, enact historic tax cuts, rebuild our military, and honor our veterans. We will work hard to once again earn the votes and support of all Mississippians. From campaign manager Justin Brasell:While Roger Wicker was speaking on Donald Trump's behalf at the Republican National Convention and traveling the country to help elect President Trump and Republican U.S. Senators, Chris McDaniel was missing. After attacking and insulting Donald Trump and his supporters in the primary, Senator McDaniel did nothing to help elect our President.Mississippi Republicans now have yet another opportunity to defeat Chris McDaniel - a man who who has spent a decade barely showing up for work, accomplishing nothing for our conservative cause, and embarrassing all of us with his unethical, unlawful campaign tactics.

What a waste of other people’s money
If I ever had a doubt, now I cannot get on the Roger Wicker bandwagon fast enough. What an embarrassment and disaster a Senator Chris McDaniel would be for Mississippi.
Wow. This campaign is going to be way more embarrassing than the state flag or whatever legislation you don't like. At least it'll be a short one.
And since I ask it of our urban Democrat brethren, I'll ask here: why aren't these people at work?
They wasted their time and money putting it online. Can't hear a thing other than the clapping.
The stage was carefully planned out....dude with bow tie, dude with no tie, dude with black skin. Got all the bases covered. Except no hoochie mamas.
He apparently decided not to brandish a giant confederate symbol or a blurb from the constitution about slaves counting as fractional people....so maybe he has matured since the last run.
Well Tea Party Candidate Chris McDaniel is running against Senator Wicker and in my opinion committing political suicide he should have announced a year ago not just months before primary. He has announced his candidacy just 3 moths before a state wide senate race. The highest polling data has him at 22% chance of winning. Roger Wicker won the last election with over 60% of the vote. Wicker also has close to 4,000,000 Cash on Hand. I will be shocked if he even gets over 35% of the vote in the Primary. #ISTANDWITHWICKER!!!!!!
Do you think he will pull out the bus with the Constitution, and black people only being counted as 3/5 a person again?
Even if I thought McDaniel had a vision and a chance to win (and I think he has neither), I'd refuse to be associated with his supporters after his last campaign. His base is certifiably insane, and guilt by association is a thing y'all.
Was Clayton Kelly there?
The last campaign cost several individuals greatly, in terms of prison time and their lives!! Just wait, history will repeat itself.
I bet Wicker regrets honoring Jeff Davis in his speech at the opening of the civil rights muesum. Good luck asking African Americans to bail you out like they did Cochran. He might as well wrap himself in that Dixie flag and try to “out McDaniel” McDaniel.
Wicker crowd is scared... throwing low blows and touting what’s in the trough already. It’s only been two hours since he announced.
McDaniel's biggest problem may be his slogan - "REMEMBER MISSISSIPPI".
Too many Mississippians are going to remember the disaster McDaniel's campaign was four years ago; the idiocy of his campaign staff and volunteers; the stupidity of McDaniel himself following the campaign.
Yes Chris - we are all going to remember. And its not going to be good memories of you and your ilk.
It is like Republicans just forgot about what happened in Alabama a few months ago when this exact scenario occurred. So who is qualified to to run on the Democrat ticket. Please tell me it is that truck driver that ran for governor last time. This would have to be the most embarrassing defeat in history if Republicans lose this seat.
I don't know where a guy above found he has a 22% chance of winning. Learn to read polls before trying to interpret them.
McDaniel had a case against Trent Lott and Haley Barbour and the GOP establishment when they rallied democrats to vote against him, effectively subverting the will of the people who had put them in power for years. Those guys begged for our votes for decades, and when we voted differently, they ran to people who had never supported them to bail them out. It didn't matter that McDaniel turned out to be an incredibly loose cannon. They knew better and dammit, they were gonna win, no matter who they stepped on!
Having said that, McDaniel is a freaking loon. No way would I want him in the US Senate. He's becoming a conservative version of Cindy Sheehan (remember her?) Whatever sympathies I had for McDaniel went far far away when he threw that months long temper tantrum after the last race.
@1:57 PM never underestimate the power of walking around money
There is bad blood on both sides in this race. More so than in most elections. You should see the comments that aren't being approved and they aren't limited to one side.
McDaniel is the Joel Osteen to Republican politics. I'm a republican, Gun owning, red blooded American, but McDaniel is a moron and a disgrace to the whole state. I'd tell it to his face if I ran across him. #justgoaway
Wicker wouldn't DARE try to ask bl ack voters to save his ass from McKlaniel, like we did for Cochrane. You're on your own, Wicker man.
His base definitely has cult like tendencies and McDaniel is their Jim Jones.
Just wish these trolls Kingfish could come up with some new material.
Shit! Amazing how fast things change in this climate.
Ten years ago McKkaniel would have been the troll!
Wicker hired Brasell? I hope McDaniel didn't know that before announcing because, if he did know and still decided to challenge Wicker, then he's a bigger moron than I thought.
And it doesn't get any better for McDaniel if he withdraws his Wicker challenge to go for Cochran's seat because he's already thrown down the gauntlet and now he's going to be taking fire from Brasell as long as he's in the first race (and maybe beyond). Dude is dumb, dumb, dumb.
On a happier note, we should be finished having to hear McDaniel's braying after this election.
Better than vasodilators for the MSGOP RINOs and their bootlickers in the "press".
3:01 - agree with the relief of having to hear from McDaniel after he loses (by a large percentage) this election!
Congratulations to our next Senator David Baria!
Looking forward to more Jeremiah Boddy hit pieces KF.
Could not see the video, but I can imagine the rhetoric that comes out of McDaniel His prior campaign and supporters reminded me somewhat of a cult, similar to the Reverend Jim Jones and his followers.
Oh I'm feeling the love. Republicans bashing each other.
Praise the Lord! The stone has rolled away the political grave by the Anointed One's arch angel--Mercer. Rejoice, he is risen!
Is Wicker's wife in a nursing home? No? Guess the McDaniel camp can't use their ace in the hole strategy then.
Wicker is weaker than many think and will not have any Democratic crossover votes to save him. Probably half the voters in the state do not even know who he is. Two viable Democrats filed today so that the polling may be showing that McDaniel has a real shot at being the nominee.
The Joel Osteen comment wins the day. Hell, they even look like cousins.
I second the post that suggested that even if McDaniel were viable, I just can't join that bunch of kooks that supported him last time. They are his biggest liability.
... and will not have any Democratic crossover votes to save him.
Sure he will if the Barbours say so. Thad proved that money talks.
Between Roy Moore and Todd Akin and Pence and Dolt 45 this should be a real first class sh*t show of a campaign!
This is Mississippi. Of course he has a chance. With every passing day, our most educated people get out.
True statement: I’m undecided between really weak senator or really crazy senator. Both are fans of President Cheeto. I’ll probably vote for David Baria instead of one these loons.
Is McDaniel a nut? Dunno. He was a sore loser to Cochran. However, the Cochran campaign ran a far dirtier campaign than McDaniel. The nursing home attempted photos were in very poor taste, but the attempt failed and no harm was done to the Cochran cause.
The election day ads by Cochran on the black radio stations were shameful. The claims claimed that Blacks would have to sit in the back of busses and that Blacks would lose their right to vote if McDaniel won over Cochran.
I would not have believed such ads had I not heard them.
I don't like McDaniel. But if Wicker's campaign becomes as immoral as Cochran's campaign, then I will gladly vote for McDaniel.
I notice a "3/5" reference above. Perhaps the "Cochran Effect" has already begun.
The takeaway from this wannabe's announcement today is he wants to make it about the flag. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you U.S. Senator David Baria.
Someone please ask the Congressional candidates who they support in this race. A fair question.
Everyone talking about McDaniel not having a chance must have forgot that he won the majority of republican voters in 14. If not for the old establishment rinos, stabbing their former supporters in the back with the calls of racism against a fellow republican and encouraging democrats to vote against McDaniel in the republican runoff, he would have been elected. That leaves a mark with many voters who will not ever support the old establishment rinos ever again. As for calling his supporters names, how did that work out for Hillary?
McDaniel is not Jim Jones; however, his Kool-Aid is just as dangerous.
9:39pm The difference, though, is that no one took him seriously in 2014. He will be taken very serious this time and come to understand what the full attention of an incumbent machine feels like from Day One.
McDaniel might be a kook, but those radio ads on election morning were a bridge too far. Basically, go vote for Thad or McDaniel will cut food stamps off and put you at the back of the bus. I'll probably vote for McDaniel, just for spite. Wicker is a paid for, ineffectual puppet, McDaniels an egomaniacal kook. Flip a coin.
I’m not a politician and unlike many Mississippians I don’t vote based on a person’s skin color or party. I’ve had an opportunity to meet 3 of the candidates. So, here are my layman’s observations on these three candidates.
Wicker-he’s just weird with a capital W. I’ve tried to have a conversation with him. He’s just weird and awkward
McDaniel-ego, talks to hear his own voice. He will fit in with Trump
Baria-nice guy, humble, cares about people.
My vote is to Baria.
“Two viable Democrats qualified today.......”
Lol. Lol. Lol. MAYBE one. Maybe.
The gates are open! AND THEY'RE OFF!
Fifty posts in less than 12 hours, most by the same three troglodytes who periodically ooze out of the woodwork to lambast McDaniel.
And we'll be subjected to their repeated blather for months. I think they're worse than the bunch of travelers paid by Soros to show up various places and pretend to be local protesters.
I could not hear the audio....would like to hear more about the comment that its going to be about the flag.
bradley barnes at 1:23, McDaniel should have been politically dead last time. His campaign was a disgrace and ended up with people going to jail and committing suicide and he costs the taxpayers a lot of money and embarrassment with his bogus voter fraud claims.
Alas, 30% of the US population suffers from mental illness on any given day and another 2% of the population have IQs below 70 and 17% don't graduate from high school. That must be McDaniel"s support because no one in their right mind would be fooled by this guy.
Democrats tell you straight out that they are going to screw you over. Republicans say they won't but then go ahead and stab you in the back.
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War
The enemy of Mississippi is the Barbour klan led MSGOP.
those radio ads on election morning were a bridge too far. Basically, go vote for Thad or McDaniel will cut food stamps off and put you at the back of the bus
No doubt. Even worse is that they were the work of Barbour and other GOP types who have been fighting those lies for years. These guys begged Mississippi voters to support Republicans for decades and Mississippi voters responded by giving them power. Then, when those voters chose a different candidate, the GOP establishment turned their backs on them and courted Hinds County Democrat voters to jolt the election to their candidate. It was a giant middle finger to the rank and file Mississippi voter and remains a despicable act.
If it had ended there, then I would be sympathetic to McDaniel, but the behavior he exhibited in the year after the election washed all that away. I still dislike those GOP establishment types, but I will never vote for McDaniel. Spite is not a good reason to vote for or against someone, especially if you are voting to put a nutjob in the Senate.
How much do they pay people to stand in these "crowds" and look and act like they really care?
The tenor of these comments against McDaniel shows that the RINOs are running scared.
I voted for McDaniel, but this time, I will vote for Wicker. Our country cannot afford a Democrat taking this seat.
No 9:03 --- The tenor and repeated lies in these comments against Thad/Barbour/RINOs show me that the McDites know that they have no chance. Proof: The bullcrap comments, repeated, about radio ads that had no relation to the Cochran campaign but were done by a Dem operative trying to affect a local special election. Doesn't matter - keep repeating the same lies (radio ads, courthouse escapade was nothing but wanting to watch the vote counting, nursing home was not related to the campaign) - and hope people will believe them.
Problem for McD is that yes - Mississippi will Remember
Are you denying 10:01 that Democrats came out of the woodwork to vote for Cochran in the Republican Party primary runoff?
10:36 - I don't know. In Mississippi, voters do not register by party. What I do know is that both Cochran and McDaniel increased their vote by 30 and 40 thousand votes over the first primary. What I also know is that not every new voter for Cochran was a Democrat, and that not every new voter for McDaniel was not a Republican. That's what McDaniel and his cult following want to claim, but with absolutely no basis to support that claim.
I know that there was an increase in black voter participation in 2014 Republican primary - but I also know that there was an increase in black voter participation in 2016 Republican primary that voted for Trump. While I realize that McDaniel claims that Trump is "delusional" and fought him completely in his zeal for Cruz, I don't hear the cultists claiming that those voters for Trump were Dems - although they were the same folks that voted for Cochran.
I also know that McD attempted to hire a group of black preachers in May 2014 - met in restaurant in south Jackson. Was successful until the preachers returned the money the following day. Guess his failed attempt was only for them to try to find black Republican support.
And -last time I checked, even in Mississippi, black voters are entitled to express their opinion at the ballot box. Recognize that McD does not believe that their enfranchisement applied to races that he chose to participate in as a candidate.
What Black Folks can't be Republicans???
Knew you'd duck the question. A review of the results in Mississippi's 90+% black majority precincts clearly betrays your apologia.
Thanks for playing.
Coming from a lifelong Mississippi born and raised (and educated) Conservative, Chris McDaniel is a nutcase and his supporters are even more looney. I think it's funny that he's trying to label Roger Wicker (who is very popular along conservatives in our state) a Democrat. Just more nutty behavior from a nutcase who has nutcase followers. There is simply not enough rednecks in Jones County for him to have a chance to win.
11:03, the only chance McDaniel has is to wrap himself in the state flag and hammer Wicker on his flag comments. And that won't get him too many black votes. It will get his some Trump votes, but Wicker got on the Trump train long ago and has Trump's endorsement.
Wicker is not Cochran, add in Baria and Sherman running in the Dem primary - Wicker will not get rescued like Cochran.
Dems will truly have something to vote for in their own primary this go round.
Wicker is good as toast.
It will be Baria vs. McDaniel's, with McDaniel's probably winning by a hair.
11:27 - you can review those precincts all you want, but once you do the math and add them together, you don't come up with nearly enough votes to make the difference. Thanks for continuing the myth though, it makes for good bedtime reading - can't find good fiction anymore.
During his speech yesterday, and his later comments to the press, McDaniel repeated the words "swamp," "establishment," and "McConnell" at least twenty times. It was bizarre - he didn't seem able to expand upon his remarks beyond those tired memes. I don't think he has an original idea in his head.
Take away the Democrats, Thad loses the runoff. That is why he paid them.
McDaniel in a landslide, the folks who voted for Trump will not vote for Wicker despite Trump's endorsement.
Thad was always a democrat...just compare the groups who gave him money to those who gave obama money. The only difference is, who ever is in office at the time gets more under the table at the time.
A rose by any other name....is David Baria
Drain the swamp? Not sure he can even drain the bathtub based on his record as a state senator.
I wonder why Watson, Parker, Hill and the crazies were not endorsing McSojourner?
Will Watson “Stand by his man?
It will be Baria vs. McDaniel's, with McDaniel's probably winning by a hair.
You sound like one of those State fans talking about Coach Mullins.
It's McDaniel, and he will lose.
You're wrong, 11:27, at least in Hinds County. I personally examined the runoff results and compared them to the primary, precinct by precinct. There were some increases in the predominately black precincts, but the overwhelming majority of the additional votes were in the white precincts. I can't speak for the rest of the state, but the data just doesn't support the notion that 40,000 Democrats showed up to vote for Thad in the runoff, unless the black population in the predominately white precincts is a lot more than is being reported.
There's no question that Democrats who voted in the Democrat primary also voted in the Republican runoff. I found 360 of them in Hinds County. It also is likely that Democrats who didn't vote in the Democrat primary showed up to vote in the runoff, which is perfectly legal, if unethical, in Mississippi, but it's impossible to tell how many.
I wish all you damn "conservatives" could conserve something besides a place for your own snouts in the trough.
"You sound like one of those State fans talking about Coach Mullins.
It's Mullen and you're a TSUN Troll.
You don't know what you are talking about Bill.
90+% WHITE Precinct 34
2014 GOP Senate primary = 786 total votes
2014 GOP Senate runoff = 922 total votes
Runoff vs primary net = +136 votes
Runoff vs primary increase = +17%
90+% BLACK Precinct 81
2014 GOP Senate primary = 82 total votes
2014 GOP Senate runoff = 238 total votes
Runoff vs primary net = +156 votes
Runoff vs primary increase = +190%
The black Democrat vote throughout Mississippi carried Cochran to victory. PERIOD.
@ March 2, 2018 at 9:44 AM
None the less, you have nothing to fear this go round. That will not happen with Wicker. This will be a true GOP supported primary between Wicker vs. McDaniel's
When the Barbour Kkklan gives the word the establishment MSGOP and their political backdoor men will stop at nothing to disenfranchise party voters.
9:44 - that is a comparison of two precincts, one black and one white. Now, go back and do some real analysis: There are 70 predominately black precincts in Hinds County and 25 predominately white precincts. (The others are split closer to 40/60 one way or the other.)
If you take all the black precincts and add the total vote increase, and do the same thing for the white precincts, you will find that Bill is correct. Hinds County increased its vote between first and second primary by 9,000 votes; and most of those occurred in the white precincts. Your one example provides for 200 vote increase in black precinct - where is the rest of your total?
Hinds County increased its vote between first and second primary by 9,000 votes; and most of those occurred in the white precincts.
Prove it. I'll save you some time. You can't.
Hinds increased its GOP vote +7955 between the primary and runoff. Not +9000.
Cochran didn't find "most" of his Hinds net +6732 runoff votes from "25 predominately white precincts" when the three largest GOP vote total precincts delivered only net +389 runoff votes for him. He doesn't get there from those white precincts and your "real analysis" premise, and Bill's, that whites swamped the Hinds polls (and statewide) for Thad in the runoff is bullshit.
Take away the black Democrat votes in Hinds (and throughout Mississippi) and Cochran loses the runoff. PERIOD.
David Baria has my vote!
Don't both of our US senators represent the entire population both black and white. I am sure some black people did and will vote for McDaniel. I don't see the big deal that "some" black people voted for Cochran.
I have some pretty bad memories of the last campaign in which “McD” was involved. The shiny new ads of “lady liberty” won’t make those memories go away. I understand that a good bit of it was “not his fault” directly, but still.
Please don’t make us suffer another sh*t show horror story like that again, that’s all I ask.
I'm not sure if Wicker remembers where MS is or what Mississippians are like... he has been inhaling the fog off the Potomac for too long and the power/money goes to your head. Term limits is the only solution to stop the Barbour dynasty and the Washington establishment...
Folks, looks like we are about to get ourselves a Doug Jones. Establishment mouthpiece totally out of touch with his constituency and a flawed candidate in McDaniel.
I haven't decided on wh to support but I find it interesting Wicker has started with th negative adds. He must be running scared..
