The Real Farmer's Market closes.

A regular fixture of Jackson is sadly no more.  Doris Berry closed down her  fresh produce stand at the Farmer's Market on West Street recently.  Jacksonians enjoyed her service for over 68 years.  Ms. Berry posted this message on Facebook:

Gone

Good morning fb friends. It is with a heavy heart that after 68 years I regretfully announce that I have closed the produce market at the old farmers market on Woodrow Wilson blvd. across from the stadium. I will truly miss the many friends that I have had the great pleasure of serving for so many years. Many of you are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation customers. I have literally watched you grow up, have children and grandchildren of your own. As you may have heard we have recently been plagued with some break-ins, robberies, and other unfortunate events at the market. Therefore my family has become increasingly concerned with my safety as well as my employees and customers. With that being said it is time to turn the page and move along. I am not retiring I'm just making a change. Although change is never easy, especially at 88 years of age, but I have opened a new produce market at 3615 1/2 Hwy 80 East in Pearl, Ms. My hope is that each one of you will visit me from time to time to say hello. Again I am so very grateful for your loyalty and friendship. Love to you all..... Doris Berry

Ms. Berry's daughter, Melinda, said the Farmer's Market location did not have a crime problem since UMMC security patrolled the area.  However, she said the crime problems began when UMMC security stopped covering the area.

The Farmer's Market does not keep banker's hours. It is open from 8 AM to 6 PM seven days a week.

Service with a smile

Kingfish note: Dear incoming administration: Talk about passing out government contracts all you want. However, it is private businesses such as this one which fund those contracts. Don't support and protect these businesses, you won't have to worry about having money to pay for contracts.

I am sorry to see this one close down and move on to better things. It was always open regardless of which day of the week it was. There was always a good selection of produce. It lacked the polished nature of the one that keeps banker's hours over on High Street but it had more character.

We were at her new location in Pearl on Saturday. It is wonderful and we will be regulars at her new place every week. Love that Doris Berry!

Wait. There was a farmers market in the middle of a food desert? Does that make it a double food desert?

Look for more of this to come unfortunately, especially once Lumumba ASSumes office next month.

Brenda Langham Smith County still going strong, and about to double her business.

I am sorry but, I can tell you it wasn't break-ins that caused this business to move.... business practices, competition, and staffing

You have a good point KF but unfortunately the trend for the past 15 or 20 years is that the incoming administrations or the outgoing administrations don't give a rats ass about those of us that fund government contracts, set-a- sides or bloated payrolls.

Break-in's for vegetables? That speaks highly of her food!!

It's probably a good thing that the RSS-Judge Green Circus of behavioral rehabilitation didn't include culinary school or there would be shootings over fresh farm raised turnips and mustard greens. Hate to see her go, but sincerely hope she will do much better over here on the "Green Coast".

7:12, If they'll steal Hanes t-shirt picks from a dollar general, they'll steal from a farmers market.

I reckon next you'll tell me there won't be any more milk delivered in bottles to our door.

I hate to see the stand close because it was convenient to downtown Jackson, but I definitely will do my shopping at Donna's new place in Pearl. It's almost tomato season, folks! Time to make salsa and pickled jalapenos and okra, and fruit jellies and can them the old fashioned way. Yum!

You can thank good ole Lester Spell, when he was Ag Commissioner for the closing of most of the retailers at the Farmer's Market.

Who needs a broken down old vegetable stand? You people are just a bunch of old fogey Trump voters who are tied to the past. All you oldsters need to get with the new millennium! I shop on the web and get all my stuff from Amazon, like Doritos, graphic t-shirts with Star Wars cartoons, Xbox games, Cheetos, my new knit cap that I'll be wearing this summer, gel for my man bun, comic books, Fritos, etc. I even read the Jackson Free Press online. I never have to leave my house.

Make that my mom's house.

Seriously, only Niknar hillbillies would go to a redneck vegetable stand instead of Whole Foods! This state is so backward! At least Lumumba will be our next mayor, so we'll see progress soon. I'm hoping he'll legalize weed in his first month.

Gotta go! I'm late for my World of Warcraft raid.

MOM! MEATLOAF!

I am distressed to learn that the farmers market on High Street that I have been going to for years now is apparently not real!

Let us not forget that Brenda Langham is still at the old (real) Farmers' Market on Woodrow Wilson behind the stadium. Was there Monday and she's going strong. Please support Brenda! She's the real thing.

There have been two carjacking at the old Farmer's Market location. You ask "how do you know"? My wife was down there and when she went to get back in the car, a thug came up behind her and knocked her do and stole the car! I know longer let her go down there without me. All I can say is that all the husbands and boyfriends out there - don't let your wife/girlfriend go down while you're at the office. I starting taking my gun with me when we did go there! Beware Jackson - that area is not safe!

Yep! And while they'd NEVER actually BUY fresh fruit, that demographic will definitely tie up Interstate traffic for hours, stopping to scoop up spilled plums from an overturned 18-wheeler (as I discovered, having inched-forward, for HOURS, on the highway leading into the metro from Vicksburg - having assumed there was some horrible multi-vehicle pileup ahead. No, just a truck in a ditch, with a bunch of TYPICAL HINDS COUNTY types, desperate to steal the sort of produce they'd never actually BUY - their cars literally STOPPED ON THE INTERSTATE, participating in a mass 'Crime of Opportunity').

KF, we need your help on this one.

Doris is in her 80s, I wish nothing but the best for her, and thank her for so many years of running a successful business in Jackson.

My concern is all this talk about the market being unsafe, and presumably White people being afraid to go to the farmer's market. I don't understand, because the market is across the street from Millsaps, a parking lot away from UMMC, and a cluster of state office buildings and medical clinics. This is no ghetto area.

So are people being carjacked at the market? Robbed at gunpoint? What crimes have occurred at the market that would drive customers away?

I understand that the market could be burglarized at night, that's not what I'm referring to.

I'm white, female, have shopped there regularly over many years and dispute claims of carjackings there. While an isolated case or two may have happened there, like any other place in the 3 county area, it is reasonably safe. Proof of allegations, please.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
