The City of Clinton issued the following press release:
Clinton Mayor Seeks Community Support for Police Department Rifles
Mayor Phil Fisher has begun a fundraising campaign that will better equip Clinton’s Police force with tactical weapons. Mayor Fisher is seeking the support of residents and business leaders to help the Clinton Police Department acquire twenty-five (25) M-4 rifles.
Currently, the police department has eighteen (18) M-4 rifles for patrol officers. The campaigns goal is to outfit each patrol car with an M-4 rifle at a cost of $500 per weapon.

Mayor Fisher is asking interested residents and local business leaders to donate the funds to buy the additional guns for patrol officers. To date over $2,500 has been donated by local businesses and concerned residents toward the goal of $12,500.
“With everything that has been going on with San Bernardino (California), the Colorado Theater, Sandy Hook and other “active shooter” situations, I want to make sure our police force is as well-equipped as possible,” Mayor Fisher said. “One of the lessons from the yearly training exercises we hold in Clinton is the need to give our first-responders better firepower than the criminals we face.”
Residents and business that are interested in supporting the M-4 rifle fund can mail or deliver their contribution to the Clinton Police Department’s M-4 rifle fund. All donations to the Clinton Police Department M-4 rifle fund are tax deductible.
Please mail donations:

While I totally support the effort to outfit the department with these weapons, isn't this the responsibility of the municipal budgeting process?
Do like some other cities, set up a speed trap. Or, like in the case of Florence, a swerve trap. Should have the money in just a few days.
Clinton has plenty of speed traps. Those guys don't play.
Totally agree with 1:13. I like the Mayor and appreciate the Po-leece, but it takes a lot of balls for a guvmint entity to axe for a donation.
as long as they USE them on thugs, i'll send money...
I bet they will get plenty donations. Clinton citizens are sick of Jackson thugs, too.
500 bucks? Buying a rifle that will jam, double feed or just flat out won't work is worse than having non at all. You can barely buy a Glock at LE prices for $416. MAYOR...you can do better. Clinton is not broke and you got a lot of people that will help.
They are machine guns. Not rifles.
Enact reasonable gun laws and this expense may not be needed.
Look around Mayor. You can buy 'em on the skreet cheaper than that.
11:42 Do you really believe that more gun laws are going to stop criminals? If so, the laws that are now on the books should stop all crime. The answer is NOT gun control, it is criminal control.
I totally agree with the mayor that the police should be armed with at the very least, as much fire power as the criminals.
9:28 My M-4 has yet to malfunction. If you keep the clean they are fine.
11:28 An M-4 is a carbine, not a rifle or a machine gun. Machine guns have full auto capability and I seriously doubt that you can buy one for $500.
This is my rifle this is my gun.......
California has the strictest gun laws in the nation. Yet that still didn't stop the muslims from committing their terrorism. Every mass shooting has occurred in a 'gun free zone'. How bad is it going to have to get before the liberals realize gun laws don't work.
@KF: This for fighting, this is for fun.

"shall not be infringed".
most current gun laws are unreasonable
first off, I spent years as a prosecutor in DA offices and I fully support law enforcement. but I don't understand the need for every officer to have a weapon such as this. tactical shotguns are much less expensive and much more deadly as its hard to miss...

Your years spent as a prosecutor apparently means little. You mention that you don't understand the need. That's fine that you don't understand.
I am neither law enforcement nor do I "fully support" law enforcement, but guns are tools with specific jobs. There are situations where a shotgun would be preferable. A sidearm and/or patrol rifle can still be employed and be effective in any of those situations. It might not be the best choice, but it is an effective tool.
There are situations where a patrol rifle is necessary and neither a handgun nor a shotgun would work. It would be like saying screwdrivers are much less expensive and screw in a screw better when a hammer is necessary to drive a nail.
Lastly, "hard to miss"? A typical pump action 870 would have roughly a 6" pattern at 75 feet.
@6:59. Obviously your reading skills are diffecent. The article says RIFLE. Also the difference between the two is minascule and subjective. ALL CARBINES ARE RIFLES, BUT NOT ALL RIFLES ARE CARBINES. Next time when you try gun talk, try to know your subject. Or as I like to say, just because you own guns doesn't mean you know guns.
Is ownership limited to military and law enforcement?
Clinton PD and most towns law enforcement has inadequate training for these weapons. Patrol officers in Mississippi larger towns earn about an average of $28k and very little money is spent on training and further education beyond basics at the academy. This is a feel good, but bad spent, move. General, your cops are not soldiers, they are, cops...

So, when you are threatened by a turd with a towel on his head, you're okay with Bubba coming to help you with a standard issue water gun?
I think I'd rather him come with a cannon with good sights and a trigger... even if he doesn't pass your academic certification.
