A drag race on the frontage road by Eastover Drive turned deadly last night. WLBT reported:
Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green says one man was shot and killed early Saturday morning.
19-year-old Christopher Silas was shot during an altercation, that stemmed from street racing, which occurred on the East Frontage Rd., near I-55 and Eastover Drive.
The suspect, 20-year-old Deion Hicks was later apprehended by Precinct 4 officers in the same area.
Officer Green said, during Hicks arrest, an unknown suspect began firing upon Hicks and the JPD officer.
We're told Hicks suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest and he was transported to UMMC, where his condition is unknown at this time.
The police officer was not injured.
At this time it is unknown if Christopher Silas and Deion Hicks were participating in the street racing.
Officer Green says once Hicks is released from the hospital, he will be charged with murder in the shooting death of Silas.
JPD is asking for the public's assistance in locating the person(s) responsible for shooting at Hicks and the JPD officer.
A candlelight vigil was held last night in the parking lot of Cowboy Maloney's in Flowood. Police sources informed JJ that the pair scheduled a drag race and a wager was made. One party banged up his vehicle and refused to pay off the bet. Young Silas's Facebook page shows a young man who loved four-wheeling, his truck, hunting, and fishing. He posted on Facebook once:
"Deer season is over but I think I did pretty damn good this year freezer full and put 2 racks on the wall."
A young man enjoying life whose fate was cut too short. One police officer blamed Street Outlaws
for these drag races. He said the kids watch the show and want to try out in real life what they see on tv.
Kingfish note: There was a drag race that ended in the killing of a young lawyer in Jackson around 15 years ago. If I remember the story correctly, a 14 year-old boy took his step-dad's Viper, and went drag racing down Lakeland drive. One car ran into a vehicle that was going down the street and it burst into flames, killing a man who had found out that day he had passed his bar exam. Does anyone remember that case? News stories online are hard to find.

most evenings I can hear "pocket rockets" winding out on that frontage road--of course most of these dudes are just life support systems for future heart/organ donors HOWEVER I worry some innocent citizens are in danger!!!
I have had my life endangered TOO MANY TIMES, on I55, in that approximate area, by vehicles zooming past me at speeds surely exceeding 110mph (and narrowly missing my bumper, as they weaved through traffic). Considering that these vehicles generally came by in MULTIPLES, I assume they were drag-racing.
So, for anyone killed as a result of his own drag-racing, I can only say GOOD RIDDANCE.
And there is nothing endearing or noble or innocent about big, loud trucks, or ATVs, either.
If Jacksonians are good for nothing else, at least they excel in keeping their own population in check.
Well stupid, guess what? Silas was from Brandon, the other guy was from Byram. They were both members of drag racing groups.
As far as the crotch rockets go, the police do need to do something about them. How do you catch them? They are prepared to go up to 150 mph.
So, why do they come to Jackson KF?
I think the lawyer's name was Will Gates. By all accounts he had such a bright future ahead of himself. He was in the car with his brother, I believe, and they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. So very sad.
Teens, cars, testosterone. Kids are going to drag race. Not excusing it but they are. I guess white guys never do it, do they? (Sarcasm)
Why do they come to Jackson to drag race KF?
Shooting was the problem. The drag race wouldn't have made the news without the black on black shooting (I assumed this).
Both are dangerous and stupid. But shooting the guy over a race? Most likely more to this story. What schools did they attend?
Turn it on, wind it up, blow it out GTO.
Shooting at a guy with the police there. ..that's someone who had some gonads. More to it
This is nothing new and has been going on for years. They all meet up at the same places and race in the same places that they did in 2005. JPD is either incompetent or doesn't consider it high on the enforcement scale. It would be nice to see MHP get involved and charge the same idiots that do it over and over again no matter what their day job is.
Maybe they could move the drag racing up north to the new Costco parking lot
It doesn't matter where they 'lived', Goober. It matters where they are 'from'. That would be Jacktown!
2:34, who is probably the same person who has already posted on this thread four or fives times, you're trying really hard, aren't you? Neither one of them are "from" Jackson.
Sorry, Goob. I posted only at 2:34. 'From' as in, originated. As in where do the family be from. Both families are FROM Jacktown. Were most recently 'stayin' in the burbs. Getchur head outa your ass!
And, that would be 'neither IS', not 'neither ARE'.
Kingfish is in one of those moods where he's attempting to appear to the 'majority population' to be fair and balanced. Don't you know better than to correct him when he gets in one of those moods?
11:07, right on! that was my thought, shooting a guy being arrested, really wanted him dead.
9:09 am Please do share your drag racing knowledge with us all and suggest a long flat stretch where the sound of engines would not draw attention.
And, as for the others using this story as an opportunity to attack Jackson, we ALL know that drag racing and car racing is a sport that only attracts minorities, right?
Will Gates died in that crash 13 years ago. Remarkably intelligent, funny and friendly young man.
When you say minority, who are you referring to? Indians? White people? Surely not black people, as they're not only the global majority, but the Mississippi majority as well.
this sounds like a good ole' fashioned whacking
First of all it wasn't drag racing, it was street racing. Second, no one was killed in a car accident or anything near that so to say that it is because of racing it is false.
I've attended some of these races, it's not just minorities. I'm white. There is multiple people of different races, so do not bring in some sort of race crap.
Also if there was a wager and anything was Chris' fault he would of paid it up. If Hicks was at fault then why was Chris killed? So say Hicks shot him over the wager and all, why would someone then come back and attempt to kill Hicks as the police were arresting him? Some of y'all are thinking all this is coming from street racing. After reading most of the comments it seems like most people are trying to rant about their experiences with street racing, that shouldn't be the focus. The focus is that a 19 year old was killed, his life was ended because someone thought they should take the law into their hands.
P.S. the story does't seem as if it's telling the truth, maybe y'all should stop letting the media form your opinions for you and start using your head to exercise your rights.
@11:46 A week ago Sunday I was driving through Jackson on I-55 around 2:00 a.m. at about 70 mph and out of nowhere four cars passed me going at least 100 mph. If you and your minority buddies continue that crap some innocent person is going to get killed, so I suggest that you stop the "street racing" and go find a track to race.
It was Dooley Miller. He was racing his friend down Lakeland drive to ice hockey practice. He was an amazing person too. So sad on all sides.
His name was William Gates...brother of George Gates....son of Alex Gates.
The driver of the Mistsubishi 3000 GT was of age to drive...barely. The other driver of a Mustang denied racing...no charges were ever brought against him.
William and George and Mr Gates were very close.....yes it was just horrible luck....that spot on Lakeland scares me to this day.
Link to a story about the 2002 crash http://www.jekylhyderacing.com/sr021018.htm
But who was the kid that lived in that race/wreck?
I give up, Mr. Mason..........who?
Meanwhile, book THIS Danno: A person is shot dead in front of the cops for one reason. So the shooter will not be implicated by the deceased.
Wasn't the driver of the other car (silver Mustang) in 2002 also a hockey teammate of Ryan Miller? Apparently he was not charged.
Chris Silas was from Rankin County, born and raised. He attended Northwest Rankin and comes from a well-respected family in the community. I do not know the ins and outs, but what I can say is this:the kids gathered that night were from all races. Chris hung with all races. He was the type of guy that was liked by all. Those same kiddos that were racing were/are the same ones that gather in the Cowboy Maloney/Sonic parking lot in Flowood every Saturday and Sunday night. These are good kids doing what teenagers do. It is tragic that this happened on all sides. Street racing is dangerous; we can all agree on that, but that didn't kill Chris. A young man with a gun did. At the end of the day, two families lost their sons, a community mourns, and countless lives are forever changed and nothing will ever be the same for those who knew and loved Chris. Sad, tragic, & unfortunate all the way around.
To set the story straight, Chris was not drag racing. Chris was with his girlfriend at waffle house. He was called there by a friend who had been racing to help settle a dispute and was shot by in the back by someone that he didn't know. So please keep your negative comments to yourself if you do not know the truth of the story. Chris was a well respected young man with a bright future ahead of him. He loved life to the fullest. Why does it even matter as to where he was from? If you must know he was from Rankin County, not Jackson and was loved by many. He was just a good ole country boy whose life was taken way too soon by a senseless act of crime.
Chris was one of my best friends and he wasn't even racing or in a drag racing group he just went there and curcit is a bad place and plus its were all of the shootings in jackson take place so its not chrises faut
I know. he was a good kid from a good family. Knew his mom. Tragedy.
Has anyone heard anything on the status of the court date set for the murder of Christopher Silas. His mother suffers daily from the loss of her child. She has attended to bond hearings requesting that bond for the murdered to be increased but to this date there has been no response. I think it is sad how the justice system can just allow a murderer to roam the streets free while this young man lies in a cold grave. JUSTICE FOR CHRIS SILAS
