Here are notes and observations from the August meetings of the Board of Commissioners for the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority. The main item of interest for the general public seems to be the market share of the airlines servicing the Jackson area. I pulled the relevant document out of the board packet and posted it below. The Southwest tremors continue to be felt as Delta's market share increased from 42% in June to 46% in July.
American's traffic only increased by around 1,000 while US Air's stayed roughly at the same level. United's increased by a little more than 5,000 passengers. Delta more than doubled its market share from a year ago.
*The total number of passengers for traveling through JMAA is down 15% from July 2013 and 9% for the first seven months in 2014 if compared to the same time period in 2013. (p.3)
*Passenger carrier ops are down 25% and 3.6% (Latest month in 2014 compared to same month in 2013 will be listed first while the calendar year to date comparison is listed second.). (p.3)
*Cargo traffic: Increase of 2.1% and decrease of 3.2%. (p.3)
*Cash assets are down by nearly a million dollars from a year ago as it slipped from $12.8 million in unrestricted cash to $11.8 million. However, current assets are up by approximately $1 million. This increase is due to a doubling of accounts receivables. (p.18). Total assets are up by over $1 million.
*Liabilities decreased by $1 million from a year ago and long term debt decreased as well. (p.18).
*Aviation income (p.19) is $55,235 under the budget projection for July 2014. However, the variance is slightly better as the same income is only $12,756 under the projection for 2014. Non-aviation income is down as well but concession income actually performed better than budget projections in July but is still down nearly $30,000 for the year.
*Then there is board expenses (p.19). $400 on meals. $34,199 in travel in July when only $8,133 was budgeted for travel in the same month. The Board expense is $24,419 more than projected for the month of July. However, the board spent $17,254 less than projected for the first seven months of 2014. The board has spent nearly double the budgeted amount on meals ( $1,561 difference as board meetings are catered) and $5,388 more than budgeted on board insurance. However, the commissioners spent $18,926 less than budgeted for travel. Here it is:
First column is actual expense, second is budgeted, third is variance. First three columns are for month of July, 2014, Next three columns are in the same order and are for the calendar year of 2014. |
*Legal fees on claims docket. Baker Donelson: $21,502, Walker Group (John Walker): $46,389, May Law Firm (billed for several months. Includes Regina Quinn): $10,400. Total: $78,291.
*JMAA police will obtain breathalyzers and video recording equipment for all vehicles by the end of the year. JMAA police were forced to rely on Rankin County law enforcement agencies to actually determine whether a suspected was driving under the influence when stopped on JMAA property. See 33:20 of video posted below. Sound quality is not that great as they rarely speak into mikes. The video was shot in standard definition due to the long nature of these meetings.

Let's talk about JMAA property. I've seen airport police patrolling the new road behind Dogwood Mall, just past JC Penny's. Is that in their jurisdiction? He was parked checking for speeders.
Finally, a gub'mint agency that is well managed. From a cash perspective, $12mm unrestricted cash on hand (plus $30mm restricted), $15mm income while budgeted operating expenses for the year are approximately $12mm. Doesn't get much better than that. For comparison, I think the city of Jackson only has $2mm unrestricted reserve in this years budget. Others should take notes.
It may just be a cruel rumor, but an airport employee told me this morning that she heard Southwest was coming back after the first of the year.
8:26, some of the property along the East Metro Parkway belongs to the airport authority.
my airport source said the same thing bill--apparently some of the 'new' southwest markets are underperforming--even worse than ours did and swa is starting to get worried about revenues
Hard to believe SW is coming back anytime soon.
First off, their schedule is set through April 6, 2015 w no Jackson.
Also hard to believe because when SW enters a market, they never enter with fewer than 8 flights per day. Considering they left with only 4 flights operating, I can't see where suddenly coming back to Jackson with 33,000 outbound seats per day makes sense.
I don't know how you can say that the new routes are under-performing - they took the planes to start 19 difference destinations from Dallas Love Field and the routes don't even start operation until October 13th.
Sounds like complete BS to me
33,000 outbound seats per month - correction
I'll drive to Meridian and fly to Atlanta via Silver Airways on their puddle jumper. Delta is a horrible airline.
just take amtrak...cheaper. no security check. takes days to arrive, but hey..at least we saved some money!
Really sad Airport Director Van Derleest is leaving. --terrific manager, leader and visionary. It will be tough to replace him, a real man of integrity.
"terrific manager, leader and visionary. It will be tough to replace him, a real man of integrity. "
No wonder he didn't fit in with that bunch :-)
my wife was pulled over by Airport Police at corner of El Dorado Road and the Parkway for not coming to a complete stop. She was issued a ticket. Its my understanding that the Airport has adjoining land there. I didnt know these guys were writing tickets. She said he was young and kind of "Barney" about the deal…getting mad because she hesitated, looking for a place to pull over.
