A group of black men beat two white men late Saturday night in West Point. A relative of a victim claims it was in retaliation for Ferguson. The AP reported:
West Point police said a man received life-threatening injuries in what they are investigating as an aggravated assault at a restaurant.
Ralph Weems IV, who was injured early Saturday, was in fair condition Sunday at North Mississippi Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Genie Causey said without elaborating.
A relative, Bradley Barnes of Madison, told The Associated Press by telephone on Sunday that his brother-in-law was in a medically induced coma following brain surgery. "They're going to try and wake him up tomorrow and see what damage was done," Barnes said, describing Weems as a 32-year-old former Marine who had served in Iraq.
David Knighten of West Point told AP earlier by phone that he and Weems had gone to a Waffle House early Saturday. He said a man waved him over outside the restaurant and told him politely that people were upset by the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and it wasn't a safe place for whites. West Point Police Department is investigating an aggravated assault that occurred at the Huddle House Restaurant early Saturday morning. Police were dispatched to the scene at 2:10am in reference to a fight in progress. Once at the business located at 230 Highway 45 Alternate North, officers discovered an injured man in the parking lot and what appeared to be two other individuals rendering aid.
The man, whose name is not being released by the police, was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He has sustained life threatening injuries but the full extent of his condition is still being evaluated. Witnesses on the scene told police that an argument occurred inside the restaurant which led to a physical altercation outside. The cause of the altercation is unclear and under investigation but the preliminary investigation has revealed that officers were also called to the Waffle House Restaurant an hour earlier involving the victim.
All parties were asked to leave the Waffle House at about 1:00am. Then at 2:00am E911 dispatched officers to the Huddle House. It’s not clear whether or not all of the parties were involved in both incidents. Witnesses on the scene were interviewed but were unable to give any details leading to the identity of the aggressors. The victim was accompanied by at least two other individuals who gave statements about the assault.
The witnesses described the aggressors as a group of black males but couldn’t provide any other information. The victim of the assault is white. Chief Tim Brinkley said, “This does not appear to be a hate crime. We are investigating this as an aggravated assault. It’s very early in this investigation but thus far the evidence and statements suggest that a verbal altercation turned physical and somebody got hurt.”
Investigators with the police department are in the process of reviewing surveillance video and putting together a list of suspects. One witness did provide a vehicle description and police are working on identifying the owner. Chief Brinkley says he hope the individuals involved with come forward voluntarily before arrest warrants are issued.
There is a reward of up to $1,000 through the Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest in this case. This case is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151 or the West Point Police Department at (662) 494-1244.

9:52--you are spot on. why has the media backtracked from ferguson? once the inaccurate social media reporting stopped, and the facts such as video, toxicology, autopsy have come out..it seems that perhaps there's just something about the police officers story that is being backed up by facts...
Why is it a hate crime if a white guy beats up a black guy nearly to death while calling him racial slurs, but the tables are turned in this instance and the chief immediately discounts the possibility of a hate crime? Our Justice Department would never pursue hate crime charges against a black man.

You're right, 10:38. The victim's brother-in-law wouldn't know jack shit about what happened, would he? Ralph is a good man who has served his country honorably. He has carved out a nice, quiet life in West Point. His family is devastated and needs your thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine the anger they must have for the strangers that have done this to someone they call son, brother, nephew or uncle.
Nothing good happens after midnight.
It's just a matter of time before a situation like this results in ALOT of people being killed. Angry mobs and armed victims don't mix well.

If it wasn't for the armed victim Ralph would have been killed the crowd had no intention of stopping until they killed him the armed victim saved his life. If it wasn't for his wise thinking a lot of dead black men would have been killed. But rather than firing on a crowd he went to Ralphs aid first then made the decision to draw his weapon at which point the crowed of angry blacks dispersed. Yes I do feel this is a Hate Crime and the FBI needs to investigate.

The police chief hasn't said anything about a gun. Something doesn't sit right on this.
I've been with friends eating breakfast at different Waffle Houses at 1 or 2AM or even later from Austin, Athens, Baton Rouge to Ft Lauderdale to Memphis and just about everywhere in between.
There's usually one common denominator in there past 2am or whenever the bars close: some people are drunk, some are stupid, and some are both, unfortunately.
I've seen lots of people making asses out of themselves, and then heard their lying bullshit excuses to cops about how they were "just sitting there eating, minding themselves". Cops, on the other hand, whether they're black, white or Latino or Asian-American, I've learned, generally aren't stupid and they don't want to do a dance with stupid drunks who insult their intelligence either. Then drunks test them with nonsense by telling stories with so many holes in them that they undercut their own possible innocence or that of one of their own partners. It usually ends with an idiot or two cuffed in the back of a squad car.
Generally, if you weren't there, you don't know the details or anything close to the truth. And if you were and weren't one of the participants, you probably don't know the full details and frame of mind of those in involved, so it's foolish to pick a side to defend and attack the other. The ones that do this like they're defending their family honor are either:
A. witless, low-info, sadsacks pushing a narrative that agrees with their bigoted agenda
B. Trolls who are bored but know they can get a rise out of stupid bigots.
Otherwise, it's just something for idiots to argue passionately about, none of whom are armed with the facts.
Those who are rational and critical thinkers already know it's impossible to eradicate willful ignorance from MS or anywhere else it exists. Just point & laugh.

But let's suspend reality for a moment, since you're so eager to, and say your assumptions are correct. Let's say the witness is lying and isn't recalling the story properly because he was drunk. Let's further say that Weems threw down some N bombs. Does that mean he deserves getting beaten within an inch of his life by a group of men who number somewhere between 7 and 20? You tell me, because reading between the lines of your post that sure sounds like what you're implying.

Of course, we're pulling for Weems to pull through, and it appears encouraging with him in fair condition if docs were comfortable with putting him in induced coma after checking nerve responses.
Meanwhile, try to keep your anger in check until we see what the investigation shows. There's no justice in going off half-cocked at this point. We don't even have facts about the numbers of people involved. If it was a mob beatdown, I'll be just as critical of those guilty as you or anybody else. But until we KNOW, we don't know shit.
By the way, are you old enough to remember the white lady named Susan Smith in SC who drowned her kids and then lied and blamed it on "Black guys" that "kidnapped her babies" during a "carjacking" for days until the investigation revealed otherwise? That case was all over all the major networks and started a major manhunt for those "suspects".

For your information, I personally had to call bullshit on one of my teammates in high school whose Dad was about to go off with his 12 gauge looking for a fella who had beaten his ass, only because when he was asked, he told his daddy "there were four of them". He was so embarrassed he lost a "fair fight" that he didn't have the guts at that moment to tell the "whole truth" by admitting that there were three of us with his back to make sure it was a fair fight, and that it was he who insisted on fighting because of a girl that dumped his country ass, in the first place. The entire fight lasted maybe a minute because he got cold-cocked on about 4 punches before he was knocked almost out. He came to mouth off instead of fight, and it didn't work out for him. By the time we got him home, his eyes were swollen almost shut, and his jaw was broke. His nose wasn't even broken but bled so much, he looked like he'd been hit by a car. I played ball with every one of the rednecks that were there that day, and my girlfriend of the day tells me that I was just as much of a redneck as the others except for the fact that I didn't drive a truck, work on cars, or dip Skoal. But I wasn't a coward to tell the truth and let some serious shit happen as a result.
I knew his daddy would've probably ended up shooting someone thinking that he'd been jumped by four guys if one of us didn't fess up quickly, so I did. I had already seen his old man come up one morning before school to the Head HS Football Coach (a former 3yr starting OL for Miss St.) and kick him and punch him repeatedly until the other coaches broke it up (no pushing match among a bunch of pussies), all for the coach paddling his younger brother for missing practice the day before because of some bullshit reason. It was either take 3 licks & run 40 40yd dashes after practice, or be suspended the rest of the FB season. He opted for punishment, but the old man wanted to be the only one to put a board or belt to his boys, so he blew up and was arrested for assault, although charges were later dropped.

Timeline in Police Press release shows something is wrong. Waffle House in WP fronts a Wal-Mart parking lot and is less than 1/2 mile from Huddle House up the road. How could there be a 1 hour difference in when police said they were first called to WH and when they show up at HH after it's all over?...particularly if there was a security guard at HH?

That is why many people are questioning why it took so long for the police to respond. How bad off was Weems when the cops were finally called? I've heard that it took 20 minutes for police to respond to the second call. Couldn't possibly be because after the first call they thought Weems was getting what he deserved could it? The cops were probably letting their relatives flee the scene so they wouldn't have to arrest them. If a thorough investigation was performed there is no telling how many crimes they will find. Don't worry though, zero chance of a thorough investigation being performed.

Ok people. I live in West Point and have all my life. The thugs that beat the two white guys are not even from West Point. And A LOT of black people including the ones working at Huddle House agree 100% that this was a Hate Crime. First, let me acknowledge that I'm white and a lot older than most of you.
I've learned that every community and every race has it's troublemakers whether they are natives or visitors. Every race has those who are so insecure they embrace prejudice and blame others.
I've learned that we can't know all the facts from the rumor mill and that the rumor mill is not always accurate.
I remember a time when one community didn't know what was happening in other communities and stuck to solving their own problems rather than drawing all sorts of conclusions prematurely and making analogies that are often not applicable .
My generation was made to understand the point of Chicken Little.
I know when everyone, instead of minding their own business, jumps into the middle of someone else's business and takes sides, it makes everything worse, not better.
I also have faced that I have never been stopped or questioned by police because I'm white. I've never had trouble flagging a cab in a city because I'm white. I've never been denied the vote because I'm white. I've never gotten beaten because I'm white. I've never been called names because I'm white or denied a job because I'm white.
That's not guilt, that was and sometimes still is reality. I choose not to continue to be a part of demeaning people I don't know. Instead, I look at the individual.
I'm treated with respect everywhere I go and yes, even by blacks, because I treat others respectfully as well. Even those who have been initially hostile or smart alecs are disarmed when your reaction is not what they expected. People will and do live up or down to your expectations.
I know that there have been worse times and we got through them and will get through this.
If a person is of good character, they rise above the fray in bad times. They become calmer and more determined to do the right thing rather than add to the turmoil.
Take a deep breath . Relax. This too shall pass. And until it does, try remembering how hard it is to be nasty to someone who is being kind to you. Try to remember that those who are mean and nasty are very sad and unhappy people.
Certainly be vigilant and prepared to defend yourself, but that doesn't require you to pick fights or invite trouble.
You should all just want hate crimes to stop. Because some of you refused to face the reality that some people for decades have been the object of bullying because they were not straight white macho males, you are being given a dose of our own medicine.
