The agenda for the regular meeting of the City Council today states Mayor Tony Yarber nominated Richard Lind and Camille Simms to the Jackson Public School District Board of Trustees. WJTV reported:
Lind is the residing Pastor of Morning Star MB Church in Utica. He also serves as the Dean of Department of Theology at New Foundation Theology Seminary. Lind is currently serving as the Director of Food Service for Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He is a member of the South Jackson Business Alliance, and a member of the Jackson Minister Alliance. Lind earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Ga., a Certificate in Theology from The Word of Life Educational Center, a master's degree in Christian Counseling from New Foundation Theological Seminary, and his doctoral degree in Christian Counseling from the New Foundation Theological Seminary.
Simms is the co-owner of the Royal Bleu Boutique, located on the campus of Jackson State University. She was named the Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 by the Small Business Association. Simms holds a master's degree in Public Administration with a special emphasis in Policy and Health Care from the University of Missouri at Columbia and a bachelor's degree in Biology, a minor in public policy from JSU.
The agenda also has a change order for the Fortification Street project:
ORDER AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE QUANTITY ADJUSTMENT #3 TO THE CONTRACT OF HEMPHILL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, INC. FOR THE FORTIFICATION STREET IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT, FEDERAL AID PROJECT NUMBER STP-7285-00(002) LPA 105325-801000, CITY PROJECT NUMBER 31501, SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION. (POWELL, YARBER)Hopefully the city will get moving on Fortification Street.
Kingfish note: Sources in the Yarber administration said the Mayor was looking to increase the "professional diversity" on the school board. The same sources said the Mayor did not want want to nominate someone who was already employed by the government or from the non-profit sector (which depends on government for funding.). Part of the challenge is finding businessmen from some wards that have the expertise to sit on a school board. One can find financial planners, lawyers, CPA's, and businessmen galore in Wards 1, 2, and 7. Finding such people in some of the other wards is more challenging. The Mayor nominated someone from the insurance industry and another who is an executive at CMMC. This is a step in the right direction.

I also see Trivia Jones has been nominated to be director of the Department of Finance and Administration. What's her background?
The information on Ms. Simms is a little confused. Her daughter Marissa Simms, the co-owner of the Royal Bleau Boutique, was named SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Technically, the boutique is not on the campus of Jackson State but just across the street from the campus. Ms. Camille Simms is also a co-owner of the boutique.
