The freakout continues

This is from a private Fondren website:

Donna Ladd from Fondren at 12:40 PM
Erica, do you or anyone else here know who paid for and put up the white "VOTE: The Future of Jackson Depends on It" signs that are suddenly all over Fondren and Belhaven. Our readers are asking. Thanks much.

Erica Speed from Fondren at 2:14 PM
obviously a group of very engaged citizens... with only 30% of Jacksonians voting, I cannot think of a better message! I hate that you are not going to vote.

Donna Ladd from Fondren at 9:18 PM
I didn't say I'm not going to vote. I just said I don't support either one and don't feel like I have a great choice based on what we know.

But back to the question: Can you tell me who bought and/or put out those signs? People are asking me, and I'm trying to answer their question. It's a transparency issue. Were they part of this weekend's GOTV effort that you posted here as some have said. Please confirm yes or no. Thanks!

Erica Speed from Fondren at 7:10 AM
Good I'm glad you are going to vote! Clarion Ledger is continuing their coverage of the race and endorsed Lee. You may be able to find some help there in making your decision. I noticed on your blog and tweets and facebook that you continue to fact check or correct the false statements about Chokwe and that you printed the critical letter on Lee from the lawyer in Yazoo (I think he is Regina Quin's partner? - though I don't think it said so, but some people said so) - looks like you are trying to figure it all out - good luck. Since you have such a strong voice and usually share your opinion , I hope you are able to come out and endorse one candidate or the other before Tuesday.

Back to the question on the signs, they are get out the vote signs. I think they say - "VOTE - May 21st - Jackson's Future Depends on It". Pretty transparent to me - VOTE - Jackson's future depends on it. Chokwe posted the sign on his website and agreed that all his supporters needed to get out and vote as Jackson's future depends on it. Lee is giving the same message to his supporters - get out and vote. Voting is the only way to directly impact the future of Jackson. Thanks!

Also, this venue isn't a political blog per say - just neighborhood info so I think you might want to call campaign offices - Lee (601-376-9596) or Chokwe (601-981-9220) for your reporting efforts. I'm just a lowly volunteer trying to help get out the vote.

Linda Showah from Fondren at 7:28 AM
Well said, Erica.

Donna Ladd from Fondren at 11:32 AM
Erica, thanks but I don't need The Clarion-Ledger's help in deciding who to vote for, or anything for that matter (although I was amazed that we both endorsed Johnson in the primary; a first! We've come a ways since they endorsed Melton eight years ago). We will not endorse in this race, as I've said publicly many times. We find the negatives on both candidates high and are, thus, reporting and factchecking everything possible on both candidates so people, including myself, can decide for themselves. We have done this in the past with races that have no clear person to endorse and so many questions left open, as both of this candidates do. Otherwise, I'm not trying to talk politics on here, and I apologize to others. I'm just asking a follow-up question to your earlier post.

Now back to my question: Do you know who paid for and distributed the signs? That's all I want to know. You pushed the GOTV effort here; did y'all put out the signs as some have indicate? It shouldn't be a big secret if so; as you say, it's a noble effort. But people do deserve to know who did it. So, yes or no?

KF note: Bet she starts complaining about cyberstalking.

Erica Speed is my new hero. Ladd is so biased that she cannot see how silly she sounds. Talk about paranoid! I honestly hate that bitch.

Several years ago, I recall a billboard at the corner of Bailey and Fortification. It had a photo of a white suburban type family, and the caption read "Get out and vote. They do". She was oddly silent on that one. Go figure.

It's a transparency issue? Signs that implore people to vote? Who the &$*! is asking Donna Ladd who put up the signs? My guess is Donna Ladd is asking Donna Ladd who put up the signs.

For those of you that don't speak Ladd, here's a quick translation:

If white people put them up, it's a veiled racist ploy against Lumumba and the JFP denounces it.

If Lee supporters put them up, it's a veiled attempt to highlight Lumumba's myriad negatives and the JFP denounces it.

If Lumumba supporters put them up, it's a laudable attempt to encourage citizens to do their civic duty and the JFP wholly endorses it.

The signs are white. So obviously it was whitey who put them up.

The bitch is having an F*ing hissy fit with wadded panties to find out who paid for signs when both candidates and any normal citizen would agree with the sign content? What a nutcase!

Anonymous said...

... to find out who paid for signs when both candidates and any normal citizen would agree with the sign content?

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the signs isn't the point.

The latest WAPT poll released in the last hour is extremely bad news for Jonathan Lee. Little wonder why his campaign has been flailing so wildly the past few days.

Kingfish said...

Its a tight race. Always figured it would be.

Problem is WAPT will NOT release the guts of the poll. We don't know the ages, demographics, nothing although they did include the race. Don't know the sample size although it was probably 500.

Donna Ladd is too chicken to endorse Chokwe, although any casual observer can see they are still writing consistently negative things about Lee. They know they've burned their bridges with Lee with the hit piece they did on him right before the primary. She is letting Tom Head wave the flag for Chokwe, all the while desperately hoping Lee doesn't win. Ladd has gotten herself in quite the bind.

If and when Lee wins, I hope he never gives her or the JFP the time of day. She should already know that Chokwe won't. When he looks at her he sees her for what she is: a self loathing white person.

Erica Speed, I don't know you directly, but the next time we are in the same place, I'm going to shake your hand.

Anonymous said...

5:12; since you pointed out what is NOT the point, can you help us with what it IS? Who would go to all that trouble and panty-wad to determine the origin of a non-offensive, bi-partisan, neutral political sign? Just answer the question without deflecting. It's no more partisan than the "I voted" sticker you get on your finger when you waddle out of your polling place and wish you had a donut.

Anonymous said...

WAPT hired an actual pollster instead of Chism? Say it ain't so.

Anonymous said...

You who write that Donna Ladd is a "bitch" are really doing a disservice to the English language. I'd say she's crazy, she's not a good writer, she's a terrible picker of winners in the political game, and that she won't stop arguing with people even when she damages herself by doing so. But to just say she's a bitch is just lazy. She's at minimum, a "crazy bitch". And I'm a woman.

If you'd like to think about something other than Donna Ladd, take a moment to pray for the people of Moore, OK. Local officials there just announced they anticipate recovering 20-25 dead elementary children in school hit by tornado.

Donna I hope you and your supporters get exactly what you deserve, another Detroit but in the deep south. It is straight out of science fiction that a candidate who has spent his life advocating a separate nation state in the South is a viable candidate for Mayor in the capitol of Miss. Race, race, race trumps everything and Bennie Thompson can kiss my behind. I will make a contribution to his opponents for the remainder of my life. Shameful for a US Senator and the Chairman of the Homeland Security in the Senate to be such a crude bigot.

Anonymous said...

Donna: We don't need to be told how to grieve for dead children. My God can you stop trying to boss people around? No. I guess you can't.

Anonymous said...

Poor Dunna knows Lumumba will be a disaster as mayor but she will lose too much street cred in 'Da Hood' if she says it. Instead she's trying to give Lumumba a backhanded endorsement by highlighting as many anti-Lee stories as possible.

Anonymous said...

"The signs are white. So obviously it was whitey who put them up"

Ah, but BLACK letters!

Anonymous said...

Actually 7:12 PM a Lumumba win is exactly what the downtown interests and Ben Allen deserve.

Anonymous said...

Bennie Thompson is not in the Senate. He can win the delta, but he'll never win a statewide election.

talking about pissed! I keep getting calls tonight from a "recorded message" on my CELL PHONE (caller ID 302-339-4033(Georgetown, DE) trashing Mr. Lee. so far THREE tonight....

Never met either Donna or Erica...but I figured out one thing on my own:
Donna: I imagine she was the fat girl in 3rd grade who picked her nose then ate the buggers.
Erica: Classy, educated and well spoken

Anonymous said...

Donna Ladd, who is she, she's a joke. Is she even from Jackson? Giving a nobody way too much attention.

Anonymous said...

What's delicious is the way Erica kept avoiding the question. Three times. Had me giggling. She obviously knows the answer, and is nice about it, but refuses to answer. And that's just like poking Ladd with a stick.

If it were a fragrance, I'd bottle it & call it "Heaven."

The "private" Fondren website is open to anyone - white, black, Asian, Indian, male, female, Christian, non-Christian, liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican, etc. - with an address in what's considered the geographic land area that comprises Fondren. Donna Ladd and Erica Speed are both "members" of the site because they live/work in Fondren (maybe that's one sign of Fondren's diversity?). As to the sign issue, who cares who put up the signs? They're reminding people to vote tomorrow. Kudos to whatever campaign or private citizen paid for them! I'll silently thank them as I pass by the sinkhole on Old Canton Road.

Anonymous said...

What happened to the car hood mounted in the front yard in Fondren?

Anonymous said...

So, because one group chooses to place signs to encourage the vote in their own areas, and the other group is too lazy to put out signs in their area, it's a conspiracy?

Anonymous said...

I think it's important to point out, Donna RENTS in Fondren.

Still cannot believe all the posts about the white GOTV signs. Thank you Donna for proving your lack of sanity. God Bless Jackson. Don't see much of a long term future for the JFP!

Anonymous said...

As a person who does not have a dog in this hunt, can someone explain if the signs are encouraging people to get out and vote, or is there an encrypted message that only people of a certain color can understand?

Anonymous said...

You know Mississippi has come a long way when a white woman wants so badly to claim that a sign implicitly urging people to vote--for the BLACK guy--is race baiting.

Anonymous said...

@7:42...In this week's JFP you can get a free pair of "Ladd-Head" glasses with special tinted lenses. When you look through them, you see the world much as Tom Head and Donna Ladd do. You'll spot the racists behind every tree. You'll understand how secret shadow PACs are actually ruling the city. And you'll decipher all those racist code words hidden in plain sight.

For example, if you put them on and look at these signs, you find that they actually say "THE KLAN INSTRUCTS YOU TO VOTE FOR LEE! JOIN THE WHITE BROTHERHOOD IN DEFEATING LUMUMBA!"

It's like that movie "They Live" with Rowdy Roddy Piper. And they're free in this week's JFP!

Kingfish said...

So are they engaged in voter suppression?

Anonymous said...

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!
Geez people, perhaps if some of you would stop emotionally over reacting and start thinking instead we could avoid governors in heart shaped bathtubs and who have adulterous affairs and gun toting mayors with an entourage.
Do remember we do manage to survive our idiots who get elected because they appeal to your fears and insecurities!

Anonymous said...

8:54; Are you sure you're replying on the correct thread? This one is about a woman who questions the origin of signs urging people to vote.

Anonymous said...

I would hardly call that a "freak-out". Donna was trying to answer a question that her readers had been asking, and Erica was trying to bait her into saying something stupid, which she didn't. No freak-out found.

Regardless of which side your pulling from, you must admit that this was a petty attempt to smear the JFP. There are much better ways to smear your opponent than trying to create drama.

Anonymous said...

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would care who put the signs out.

The first week I moved to this city, I happened to pick up a copy of the JFP and was mortified by the dreck they put in there. The dreck continues to this day.....

Anonymous said...

9:41, first, do people ACTUALLY read the JFP?? Second, what smear attempt? Apparently you were educated in the JX public schools where the art of disseminating the written word is not taught. And MS. Speed was not baiting. Ms. Speed did a good job of diffusing questions from a crazy woman.

Kingfish said...

Smear? I merely posted what someone said in her own words.

Not familiar with the concepts of satire and parody, are you?

Anonymous said...

Two very accurate comments above about Donna Ladd - "crazy" and "a joke." She thinks she is editor of the Washington Post instead of a free distribution rag that hardly anyone reads. JFP is worst buy for any advertiser.

KaptKangaroo said...

The way I read it, DL was trying to bait Erica. Erica is clearly much better prepared to deal with the situation than DL considered. If it were me engaged in the dialogue I would have simply ignored her.

Kudos to you Erica!

Some years ago a friend of mine bought ad space in the JFP for his business. The response was, in his words, negligible. He did not see any increased traffic to speak of so he dumped them after a few months. He considered it wasted money. He saw response from other local print ads. Granted, he doesn't run a hash bar or a live music venue or a bail bonds company or a vintage clothing and incense shop, so perhaps the target was wrong.

They've approached him since and he's politely declined. He griped about the lack of professionalism in the sales people.

The JFP is a joke. It doesn't reach many people outside Fondren, and one can see how antagonistic Ladd is to those in her own chosen neighborhood. She's a clown.

Donna Ladd understands neither journalism nor integrity. Just look around Facebook at the posts she has been feverishly making and continues to make even today. Her opinion is that because a significant majority of white people support Lee, he is, therefore, morally unacceptable to be the Mayor of Jackson. She believes this to be an unimpeachable truth.

That's fine if you call yourself a blogger or a special interest advocate or an editorialist. It is not fine if you call yourself a journalist and your sole measure of objectivity is your opinion of the truth.

It sickens me that Donna is working so hard to discredit Lee at every opportunity. It goes beyond just framing every article to fit her narrative about Jonathan--which she does using selective evidence and flimsy rhetorical devices. She's also on Facebook arguing with everyone she can, just looking for opportunities to attack. If you didn't know any better, you might think she is actively trying to make this election about...Donna Ladd! But, I'm sure she would tell us that she's actually looking out for the interest of Jackson because she knows better than the rest of us what "truth" is.

This is the problem with anyone who thinks they understand the truth. What is moral and ethical somehow gets confused with self interest and "it's right because I believe it." She can use all the logic and justifications in the world inside of that loop, but it's still based on a false and irrational premise.

The fact is: 80% of Jackson rejected her endorsement of Harvey at the polls. Her attacking Lee on behalf of Harvey put race in the center of the election instead of focusing on real issues such as education, crime, and infrastructure. The great dialogue on policy that might benefit the citizens of Jackson never occurred because Ladd decided to re-fight the Civil Rights movement and cast herself as the great white knight. If Lumumba wins, he will be laughing all the way to the bank. And the people of Jackson will suffer from never having had a true debate that holds candidates responsible for anything more than rhetoric.

2:10, what a great post!!!! I always wonder about this supposed "fact checking" she says she does. Where does she get these "facts"???

BTW, Kingfish, great fun today reading this.

Donna Ladd grew up a poor white girl in rural Neshoba County. Other kids shunned her in school. Her only friends were poor black kids. (This isn't supposition; she brings it up every other editorial.) Throw in Neshoba's horrible past and it's not difficult to imagine a person whose views on race and power are all over the place. No wonder there is no endorsement...except from Mr. Head, of course, whose knee-jerkiness is underscored by the times he's lost it when addressing folks who disagree with his blog posts. I was especially moved when he told one reader to basically kiss his ass. Classy way to build readership! But, you know, he's an historian and published writer and all that. My guess is JFP readers will, for the next few years, be subjected to wails of complaints and cries of "unfair!" regarding how awful and nasty and horrible and snooty everyone was to them this election cycle. Unless, of course, C Lumumba wins. Then, you know, reconciliation. Barf..

Anonymous said...

11:48, you should have an editorial voice in some news outlet...can't think where, though...

Anonymous said...

I saw a black woman holding a Lee sign today. Now Whitey is trying to trick black folks into voting for one of the black guys.

Disgraceful.

Anonymous said...

Donna Ladd needs to quit using the way she was brought up as an excuse for the way she is now. My mother was the daughter of a sharecropper from Neshoba County and she never used poverty or being a share croppers daughter as an excuse for anything. Maybe the reason no one wanted to play with Donna Ladd as a child is that she was as unlikeable then as now.

Please ~ What's with the veiled attempt to bestow relevance upon a nutcase like Tom Head. The boy never sat in a desk in a school house or attended a university with a physical nexus in his entire life. His mommie sheltered him from tit to graduation tassle. He no more than a figment of his own imagination. Quit feeding the troll. Piss on him like you would a roach on the back patio after dark when you take an outside whiz. (my robot words are esteemed trud. I think it misspelled turd which would have nailed Head)

2:58, go crawl back into your hole. The educated blacks in JX are getting the vote out for the man they think will best serve Jackson.

And BTW, 2:58, the Realtors Association had a meeting this week about what to do if Chicken Head wins because of the glut of homes that will be on the market, depressing real estate values. You want Lumumba 'cuz he is going to revitalize JX?? That meeting should tell you what will happen, without a doubt, if Lumuba gets elected.

Let it be said Madame Ladd will rue this election based on her own doings. Her constant reach to Melton to maintain any relevancy and her veiled support of Chockwe will end up isolating her to the very island she occupies in her mind.

The non-stories will play out as the finest Pravda-ish fear mongering amongst those she hopes to provide counsel and leadership. Unfortunately for her, she has no Gulags to demand subscription.

Regardless of the end game in the election, the JFP spent what little equity it had left, unless of course you are a Chockwe operative.

Love,

Uncle Kangaroo

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
