I live in the suburbs but work in Jackson and my business was based there until today. I have always considered Jackson my home and have concentrated my volunteer efforts and work there with the Chamber, DJP, and other groups. I will resign all of those positions tomorrow morning. I will not work for a Jackson that elects Chokwe Lumumba. I guess I will find ways to give Brandon my time and treasure.

We're screwed. And to think I'm closing this week on an investment property in Jackson. smh.

So - when will the first pothole be filled?

Gary Rhoads just began construction on the Great Wall of Flowood. Quickest solicitation for bids, award and start of construction ever. I guess Madison and Rankin will reappraise tomorrow to reap the extra tax dollars on the increased property value.
Congrats Jacktown, you truly are a distant memory. You deserve everything coming to you.

Happy in Rankin

I really don't think he is going to be as bad as everyone thinks.

I'm withholding judgment until he's actually had some mayoral time under his belt. He may end up being great for the city of Jackson.

You never know!

Good grief!
I hope Mayor elect Lumumba will not become one of the people he disliked by being as prejudiced as they were.
That said, eventually,Jackson will go the way of Richmond and Charleston and Savannah and Baltimore just like other Southern cities.
In other words, the city will " re-gentrify".
They'll figure out that being in the suburbs is a yawn.

10:32, those cities have amenities that businessmen capitalized upon. Jackustan doesn't possess them. No one wants to trek there for the Civil Rights Museum (see Memphis) or failing schools or replacing their (stolen) rims. And, regarding being in the suburbs, there's not a stream of tail lights that I see from Jackustan at the moment.

10:32 not sure what you are talking about...

Charleston is only one that has majority white population and the only one with a white mayor. Savannah and Baltimore both have black women. I guess we could strive to be like Baltimore and Savannah and elect "yo mama's" wife, La Rita Stokes. Now that would represent progress!

For those stuck in Lumumbaland, call Century 21 at 601-981-1111 and list your house tomorrow before your neighbor lists his.

1) Born and reared in Jackson. Sad to see.

B) Silver lining: I am now a Madison resident, so my property values just saw a nice bump :)

Last) With this awesome news, I wonder if Teddy Duckworth is re-thinking that whole District at Eastover fantasy?

10:42, you're full of it. I and every Democrat friend I have, and every Republican friend, too, voted for Lee. I told the truth about Mr. Lumumba to everybody I know.

This isn't a Repub./Dem. issue. Lumumba is really neither. He's a radical, militant separatist who hates not only white people but also the entire country. The man doesn't even recognize the American flag so many have fought and died to protect and preserve. He presently supports a separate black nation carved out of the US.

I never thought I would leave my beloved neighborhood in Jackson, but I'm calling my real estate agent in the morning to hopefully sell before property values start their free fall. Madison County, here we come.

How old are you? Were you an adult in the 60s and early 70s? Did you have relatives in Charleston, Atlanta,Savannah, Richmond, and Baltimore?

Your fear of losing your property value in the short term trumps saving a great city? MONEY trumps principle for you, does it?

If Jackson goes the way of Detroit instead of the great cities of the South, it'll be because the business men and women here are cowards and turned tail and ran just like the Yankees did in Detroit If the whites who lived in west Jackson hadn't turned tail when the first black face said " boo", we wouldn't be at this turning point.
Lilly livered cowards. You don't think you can stand up and fight and win. You don't have any patience so you can't see time changes things.

You owe your ancestors better than this! They didn't leave Mississippi when it was in ruins in 1864. They suffered through until they could rebuild.

The truth is you are afraid blacks will treat you like you treated them. Well, some of us understand that there are sorry, no good folks in both races and we don't want them to prevail, we want stand together with the decent folks of all races just like the citizens of Richmond and Savannah did!

I have no use for cowards. LEAVE and good riddance!

thanks for the history lesson 6:56. so if whites had held their ground in the 60's in west jackson, the blacks would have had to go farther afield and jackson would be okay? chokwe's coming reign is tantamount to sherman's march. who knew? and correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't everyone in detroit a yankee?

Thank you WAPT for conducting those polls and breaking it down by race. You just galvanized Bennie and his folks in their efforts to tar Jonathan as the whiteman's black. You helped elect Lumumba. Of course, it should be noted that Lee's horrible debate performance didn't help either. His youth and inexperience showed as he allowed Lumumba to filibuster the debate as he quietly sat there. These two events doomed Lee's campaign.

The comparisons between Jackson and Detroit - or Birmingham or Memphis - are invalid for one reason - the state capital. Jackson has the rest of the state partway over a barrel if they want their government to run, and that's what will keep Jackson from crumbling no matter who the mayor is.

10:58-

Agreed that Charleston, Richmond, Savannah and Atlanta are good examples of southern cities reborn. However, I believe that there is a distinct and obvious difference between those cities and Jackson. I was born and raised in Jackson, but I am also a realist. Richmond, Charleston and Savannah have much more history than Jackson. Charleston and Savannah are coastal. And Atlanta is arguably the commercial center of the Southeast. Jackson has none of this -- and never did (even before the white flight began 20+ years ago). Jackson does not have the economic base or potential growth to support anything close to the renaissance that those other cities have seen. Pockets of gentrified neighborhoods may survive (i.e Woodland Hills/Fondren, Eastover and Belhaven??), but as a city, Jackson has little hope. It's future looks much more like the rotting rust belt cities of Akron, Cleveland, Gary and Toledo than any of the cities you reference.

So sad.

2:12 a.m., where can we sign up? No joking. In case anyone is interested, the metro association of realtors met earlier this week to figure out a game plan for what is probably going to happen: a glut of homes on the market will depress real estate prices and kill the tax base. I'm trying to figure out how to move to New Orleans (please, it's got its own problems too...) and rent my house. But I guess everyone else is trying to move to Madison and rent out their home also, really sending real estate prices further down.

A Chinese saying: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."

These black militant radical groups took their first step many decades ago. Chokwe Lumumba is but one of them. These groups have been on the march in cities throughout America. Funding a city councilman here- -a mayor there.

Their journey to their goal is progressing more rapidly now that they have some key politicians both nationally and locally supporting them.

The U.S. Atty General, Eric Holder refused to hold the Black Panthers accountable when they strong-armed voters at a few precincts a couple of years ago.

Slowly, step by step these radicals are gaining ground and they will continue their march until they are in control.

As the creed of Chokwe Lumumba's New Republic of Afrika states they will achieve their goals "by any means necessary".

They won't take certain Southern states for their land today or tomorrow, but rest assured their army will not stop their march until it happens.

Then, what will happen? As I wrote the other day, I wonder if Chokwe Lumumba includes Robert Mugabe and Idi Amin as his heroes.

Someone responded that it is paranoid to consider Lumumba a reflection of Idi Imin.
Paranoid? Who wouldn't be frightened of groups who do not hide what their intentions are? Groups who want to rule a region and do away with those of every stripe and color who do not agree with them.

As I wrote the other day, Idi Amin murdered 300,000 of his own people because they didn't follow his lead.

Someone of Idi Amin or Robert Mugabe's ilk will one day be in that position right here in what used to be the U.S.A.

If you don't live in Jackson, then just STFU about this race. Nobody gives a rats ass about white assholes lobbing grenades from the suburbs. Clean up your own shithole, it's not nearly as nice as you think it is. It has you as a resident.

If you live in Jackson and your candidate didn't win, that's called democracy. The people have spoken. Try harder next time.

To everyone who says they are putting their house up for sale and moving to Rankin County, please hurry the fuck up because you are a coward and aren't contributing to Jackson anyway. A wise businessman today made a very astute observation about our once-fair city: Most of the white tax paying citizens left a long time ago. The people who elected Chewbacca have placed the tax burden on middle-class working blacks. Now they will leave too.

I would go to say that the there are only 17,103 white people left in Jackson proper. This is the beginning of the realization that the white man no longer has any influence over the city of Jackson. Sorry but that's the way it is going to be.

If the people of Bolton can survive Bennie Thomson being elected mayor over forty years ago the people of Jackson will survive Chokwe today. There was no raping of white women and the white businesses were not confiscated by the black foke. Crime in Jackson effects blacks more that the whites and Chokwe he will have to address it regardless of his opinion of police. Can he really be as bad as law and order, Frank? If so, it will be an entertaining four years. Chokwe problem is his love to agitate and being the mayor requires compromise. I can not believe all the crazys who think the sky is falling because Chokwe is the new mayor. I bet he is having a good laugh about it.

Interesting times and interesting comments.

1) I was born and raised in Jackson. I left 10 years ago. My decision to leave has been affirmed, both by this election and by the city's decline in the last decade.

2) I will be watching with morbid interest to see how the Lumumba era unfolds. I am having a hard time deciding whether he will tend toward simple incompetence or, on the other hand, blatant corruption.

3) Hard to imagine why anyone who has any choice whatsoever would choose to live in Jackson, even if one's work is in the city.

4) This blog will greatly benefit. I anticipate many hours of amusement reading about the Lumumba office's foibles on this site.

I work for a company that is based out of state. If this clown comes in here demanding this and refusing that they may well leave town and that affects me, so I'll speak my mind and if you don't like it, go tell your new mayor to send his paramilitary goons out, because that's what's coming to chase out the few remaining white people and successful businesses.

By the time Jokeway is removed, all that will be left in town will be barber shops, nail salons, payday loans, and soul food kitchens. I have a problem with a bunch of ignorant fools electing a antagonistic racist to destroy the city in which I work, so I'll scream and yell and say what I want. Jackson will not lose more residents necessarily. Most of the people have already left that wanted to go.

Once Lumumba is sworn. Says the pledge of allegiance. Fleshes out his administration and starts governing. More residents, Lee supporters, suburbanites, state officials, and business folk will warm up to him. He is currently making the personal transition from human rights activist to mayor.

Anonymous said...

I agree with 1:09. He campaigned on a chicken in every pot but how is he going to accomplish that working(for now anyway) with the same net operating income as Harvey. Should residents and business get spooked and move, he will be working with less money than Harvey. I know Chokwe is smart, that much was obvious when he changed into a chameleon and convinced everyone that he was not a radical racist and they voted for him, but I really don't see him as the savior that can lure new money into Jackson.

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for the Doors, died the other day. Not long after, the city of Jackson died. In honor of both, I quote one of Ray's band's songs, as it seems to fit the destiny of Jackson:

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah
There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby

Rest in Peace, Ray.
Goodbye, Jackson.

I believe Chokewe is going to do exactly what he said he was going to do, and each time he does it some people will be outraged. But he knows those people that get their feelings hurt aren't the ones that elected him, and he knows he doesn't have to give a damn what they think anyway. Get used to it.

Jackson hasn't nearly the decay that Richmond and Savannah experienced or some other smaller southern cities (Roanoke, VA, Greensboro, NC, Greenville, SC are but a few examples) that have revitalized. To continue to repair, restore and remodel will not be nearly as expensive or as daunting a task. Their economies suffered with the demise of textiles and tobacco but they had a " build it and they will come", " our glass is half full" attitude and love for their cities.

These smaller towns didn't have the hospitals, the colleges( except for Greensboro), the court and as Bill pointed out, the capitol. They didn't have a tourist attractions as nice as our Old Capitol or Governor's Mansion or planetarium or the good restaurants...indeed because of liquor laws, NC and SC have really battled to develop a restaurant industry.

But, it is true the people of those states don't bad mouth their own. They don't air their dirty laundry to scare others away. Instead they brag about and promote their assets. They create attractions where none exist. They read their own history and know their ancestors went through much greater hardships and tougher times and stuck with it until they could build something better.
Y'all have heard of Reconstruction, right?

By the way, how many of you Chicken Little's know what the role of the mayor and city council are in Jackson ? Do you even know what they can and can't do?

If women leaving work in Jackson are afraid to walk to their cars, it's because they've been scared by the fear mongers and you've not asked the city for help if you're making them park far away from your building and they are leaving at various times at night.

I really, really feel sorry for those of you who are living in fear.

Just imagine what the next person is going to have to say to get elected in Jackson. I imagine it will have to be pretty caustic.

Kingfish said...

Tell that to Charlotte Reeves, scumbag.

Anonymous said...

Scumbag? 8:39 didn't deserve that, especially from the blog owner. He actually made good points, much more so than the litany of real scumbags that proliferate this Mickey Mouse site (that I love reading). Lighten up KF.

Kingfish said...

What about Charlotte Reeves and her face that was beaten to a pulp? What about the two young girls in Belhaven that were the subjects of attempted assaults, kidnapping, and possible rape last week. What about the other women in this town who have been beaten. The woman who was dragged down the street at Babalu.

and he says fearmongering? Scumbag.

8:39
No, moron, it's not a perception of and fear of crime caused by "the fear mongers". Tell that to the two women in Belhaven that ran from black guys with guns, tell that to all the other victims of "perceived crime".
As far as asking the city for help, how many businesses have left Jackson after asking for help and getting no response? My own brother had to hire off duty sheriff deputies for a private army when the city refused to increase patrols around his business.
I don't live in fear, because I carry. I also don't live with blinders on trying to convince myself that what is really isn't.

Anonymous said...

8:39 I feel sorry for you. I bet you are a man with no children. Or Donna Ladd. Same thing.

Anonymous said...

I generally support 8:39's remarks.

KF: you cite 3 cases of violent crime in support of your fear mongering, and each of one of those cases is a tragedy.

Having said that-- this is a big city. Stuff like that's going to happen from time to time. That's not to say we should accept it, but if you want safe, go live (and work) in Madison or Rankin Co.

10:16 FTW

I would have to guess that 8:39 and 10:40 are one and the same. Apparently this idiot believes that stating the truth is to assume the role of fearmonger. Having said that--thanks for giving Jacksonians another reason to move to Madison or Rankin Count.

10:40 here. Believe it or not, I'm not the same person as 8:39.

Using you guys' logic, every American city with 150,000+ people should be deserted because of violent crime.

Just remember white boys. Wednesday night is "white girl" night. Me and the rest of the athletes at Ole Miss like to entertain your sorority sisters. I swear, "do any of you rednecks know how to please a woman"?

Black Mamba said...

You racist pigs. First you raped our women; enslaved our brothers and polluted our gene pool.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. White girls are flocking to the brothers in droves. that is your greatest fear.

I like to read copies of the Northside Sun. I can count at least five white girls that were featured with their weddings or engagements. Everyone I had either banged or my dogs have banged.

I guess you wimpy rednecks just can't please a woman. I mean them sorority girls like it "nightly and not very politely"

Whats the matter Kingfish, you scared to post my comment. Maybe your girlfriend is a sorority girl! (more likely a fraternity boy).

Ok, lets put crime out the window, and assume that you are safe at night.

What other reasons would someone want to live in Jackson? Please tell me.
Is it the superb school system? The great sewage and water system? The trustworthy police department? The always rising property taxes? The always decreasing property values? The always available hair salon? The ghetto shopping centers? The City Parks? Your militant City leaders? Maybe it's just the friendly atmosphere one gets at a gas station on a Saturday night.
Please list a reason why any sane person would live in that City by choice.

Anonymous said...

No, 12:21, only the cities that consistently rank in the top cities for violent crime. Like Jackson.

The following comment is an OUTRIGHT lie. The Jackson Association of Realtors (not sure who this "metro" association is mentioned) NEVER met to discuss the election or the impact that will have on real estate. I am not sure who spread that lie, but it is emphatically false. This has been verified with the President of JAR and the CEO, Jo Usry, as well as with multiple members of committees. If you want to spread fear, do not defame the Realtors who hold up this city by representing 1000's of real estate transactions that benefit the economy in numerous ways. We also hold follow Fair Housing laws and would never bring race into a discussion.
Sharla Bachelder, REALTOR
RE/MAX Alliance

2:12 a.m., where can we sign up? No joking. In case anyone is interested, the metro association of realtors met earlier this week to figure out a game plan for what is probably going to happen: a glut of homes on the market will depress real estate prices and kill the tax base. I'm trying to figure out how to move to New Orleans (please, it's got its own problems too...) and rent my house. But I guess everyone else is trying to move to Madison and rent out their home also, really sending real estate prices further down.

12:50,

The middle and upper middle classers that I know who want to live downtown (or in Belhaven or Fondren) want to do so more out of disgust with the suburbs than an I-love-Jackson attitude.

They enjoy Jackson but know it needs a lot of work. If you're middle/old aged and live in the suburbs and don't understand *why* someone wants to live "in town" then I doubt I can convey the reason to you. A lot of it has to do with aesthetics. It's also a young person thing. Tons of young people have started moving in droves to cities around the country (even in the Southeast). Jackson is just behind the curve, as usual in MS. It will happen, though; it's already happening to a degree.

2:20, your comments are patronizing and naive, at best. If I lived in New Orleans, I would live in New Orleans instead of a suburb, because there is abundant life and culture in New Orleans. Pubs, cafes, restaurants, theaters, schools, churches, coffee shops. All of it walkable, all of it connected to the other parts of town. There is vibrancy in the other places that you mention that downtown Jackson will never have. Never. If you live in Belhaven, you are still getting in your car to go to Babalu. And then what? Holding hands and dreamily wandering over to buy some groceries at McDades and then some chalk paint? Then what? You have to use your car. There is not enough culture on a consistent basis happening to make it a draw. Even the hipster gay guys I knew who lived in the King Edward moved. They all said they missed having back yards. There wasn't anything at the KE keeping them there. Manufactured coolness isn't enough. Not enough to offset the negatives of crime, infrastructure, terrible schools. I know a lot of young couples who live in Belhaven and Fondren before they have kids. 90+% of them move when their kids get school aged. Is that because they are too "middle aged" to understand why they should stay? No, it's because they are realists.

black momboy probably had a make out session with a hefty inebriated white girl once, so now he thinks he is a threat to white mens everywhere.. and judging from his sophisticated logic, is in the 9th grade. well, 8th.

Anonymous said...

Black momboy,

That's the first time I've heard an accusation like that.

The racist pigs raped your women, then polluted your gene pool with canines, and now the shoe is on the other foot and white girls are flocking to you or your brothers, which are dogs?

BTW, Monday night and Tuesday night and Wednesday night and Thursday night and Friday night and Saturday night and Sunday night is ladies night around here. We don't discriminate and we certainly don't just restrict the ladies to one night. Sometime it's ladies night several times in one night. That's just how us rednecks roll

I moved from deep South Jackson (Swan Lake) 22 years ago to Brandon. At the time our house was losing value at the rate of $2,500 a year. Crime in the area was on the increase, we still hadn't received the sewer lines that we were promised in 1974 when the area was annexed into the city.

22 years later things have gotten worse not better. The facts speak for themselves.

Just wanted to point out that the original guy who responded and said he would resign and post his letters of resignation here never did so. Probably because, just like everybody else saying they are going to move out of Jackson, he is full of shit. You guys need to put up or shut up, as Kingfish would say.

OK. Who said you all are someones savior?
you make the rules? right?
SO as long as it is you who make the its a good decision right?
Get over it! Noone has to ask permission for who to vote for- get that straight first. I lived with Bush- he was my President; respected him but didn't vote for him so who are you

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
