Canton alderman Louis Smith was arraigned in federal court today on one count of bribery. Judge Linda Anderson set bond at $10,000. A federal grand jury indicted the alderman. He was arrested in Canton yesterday. The charge carries up to ten years in jail and/or a fine of less than $250,000.
More to follow but two observations:
1. A PI took notes during the arraignment and left when it was over. Interesting because
2. The judge appointed a public defender though attorney Cynthia Stewart later appeared to represent Mr. Smith. She told him to continue with the engagement of the public defender.
3. Canton police chief Vicki McNeil sat in the audience.
Update: The U.S. Attorney issued the following press release:
Jackson, Miss - Calvin Louis Smith, 56, a Canton City Alderman, was arraigned today in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Linda R. Anderson pursuant to a federal indictment charging him with bribery in connection with a series of transactions of the City of Canton, Mississippi, announced U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen.
Davis is scheduled for trial on July 9, 2013 before District Judge Henry T. Wingate. If convicted of the charges, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000.00 fine. This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The public is reminded that an indictment is an allegation that a defendant has committed a crime. All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

However, in the true spirit of Separate But Equal, Don Imus and someone from NE Jackson will also sit in the dunking booth for an equal amount of time. Tom Head will give a reading for two hours on why he can't figure out who the hell he is. Cliff Cargill will give lessons with his .80 caliber desert eagle, using Frank Melton photos as targets. I'm wondering if this has to do with the Canton City Court.
Weren't the elctions in Canton monitored Tuesday? I can't remember who or why.
could the FBI have used the same person that got the Vicksburg mayor? MMMM???? Its not exactly a secret who the FBI is using...but i guess some people arent in the loop yet!!!!
Did anyone else witness the behavior of his family outside of the federal courthouse?
His wife is a large, loud woman who's hard to miss. I'm curious as to the family behavior to which the commenter referred.
Large loud woman...That was only Lirita Stokes...
Hopefully the man has enough sense to roll on Truly before getting convicted of a Federal charge.
ah yes.."thugville" AKA Canton lives up to it's expectations!
The Lousteau-haters are lining up to listen to his take.
This is only the beginning of what is to come in Canton. Same thing with DMR, Walker & Katrina funded "wink wink" developments & projects on the coast. It's about to get big, interesting and juicy........
Taking a chump-bribe in Canton is equal to fraudulent Katrina projects on the coast? Even if that made sense, your sinister speculation is baffling. Roll out the secret evidence of which only you and one other person (who you must kill) are aware.
No, not "equal", but going on simultaneously. I don't know of anybody that would tell you it's a "secret" either. I would suggest you come out of hibernation of whatever rock it is you are living under. It's pretty widely known in state and local governments the feds (in large number) are on the coast and going from community to community interviewing and collecting testimony and evidence as to what has been going on with DMR, as well as the fraud perpetuated with fed funds after Katrina. Also, your sensitive panty man'ish defensive response put aside..... could you please tell me what makes my original post as "sinister speculation"? Really?
I'm sorry. I should not have used the term 'sinister'. I should simply have said 'conspiratorialist'. Roll out your evidence. Remarking that the feds are looking into something this many years later is hog shit. Can we assume you're a Barbour Hater?
No! I'm a huge Barbour supporter. This isn't about Barbour, this is about local abuse, not at the state level. There was an article not long back (I believe in USA today), where they did a whole piece on just this very thing. I'll see if I can look it up and post it back on this page. The DMR thing came down not long after this article came out (it could have just been coincidence), and it had to do with many of the same issues.....large pieces of land (many extremely rural and that are probably never going to be developed yet have $20-$30million worth of infrastructure and sanitary sewer lift/pump/treatment stations on them) that were sold between family & friends at prices highly overvalued. Let me see if I can look up the piece.
Here is one of the articles, but there are others that are newer. I will see if I can find them. I know I had one on my email from a work associate not long ago.
http://www.wtsp.com/news/article/259890/81/Katrina-funds-spent-on-underused-sewage-plants
I thought this post was in reference to the arrest of Louis Smith, the Canton alderman. What does it have to do with Katrina fraud, Barbour and DMR on the Mississippi Gulf Coast??? Did I miss something??? Talk about changing horses in the middle of the stream!!!
9:01 and 9:08; in the span of two brief posts, I think you managed to say, "Hold on, let me go look that up" about twelve times. Shit, take medication.
Bringing it back to corrupt Canton officials, Chief Vickie McNeil gets to explain to a Federal Magistrate on Tuesday why she lied in discovery in a civil rights lawsuit.
McNeil has managed to skate on the "I'm a discriminated women" claim so far. Probably no longer.
Whoever said Alderman Louis Smith is a large loud woman is a straight out Liar. Mrs. Smith is a Beautiful Woman and does not socialize with many people. whoever said it must be jealous of he, because she's very intelligent and well respected and A BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY, WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW.
