Sheriff: Son threatened his parents and deputies

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following press release about the arrest of Josh Bobo in the Palisades subdivision this morning:

January 5, 2013
Suspect in Custody After Standoff With Rankin County Deputies

Sheriff Bryan Bailey Reports:

On Saturday January 5, 2013, at approximately 9am the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Eastlake Forest Drive in the Palisades Subdivision of an individual threatening suicide with a gun.

Rankin County deputies responded to the area and were met by the suspect’s parents who stated that their son was threatening suicide with a rifle and had threatened them with the rifle. The parents fled the residence in fear for their safety. While on the scene near the residence deputies were threatened to be shot by the suspect if they approached the residence

Deputies on scene called for additional backup and secured the immediate area around the residence.

Additional Rankin County Deputies along with Reservoir Police responded. Since the suspect was armed with a high powered rifle and possibly had access to additional weapons, the residences near the suspect’s home were evacuated and a larger perimeter was secured. This included blocking the entrance to the subdivision, Fannin Landing Circle and the walking trail next to it.

The Rankin County Special Response Team was activated and members responded to the scene. During this response, two deputies collided in their vehicles near the scene. Both deputies suffered moderate injuries and were transported to UMC.

The SRT Team set up a perimeter around the residence and disabled the vehicles at the residence while negotiators attempted to contact the suspect. After several attempts to contact the suspect failed, the Jackson Office of the FBI and Mississippi Highway Patrol Swat Team responded to the scene with remote control robots. One robot cleared the first floor of the residence with no contact with the suspect. While preparing to send in the second robot to search the second floor of the residence contact was made with the suspect.

The suspect’s grandmother, working with a sheriff’s department negotiator, was able to get the suspect to answer his telephone. The suspect was talked into coming out the front door of the residence where SRT members were able to take him into custody.

After examination by medical personnel on the scene, it was determined that the suspect could have possibly ingested a large amount of prescription and over the counter medicine and needed to be transported to a hospital. The suspect was transported to UMC by AMR. The suspect is being kept for observation and is being guarded by a Rankin County Deputy.

The rifle used in the incident was recovered from the residence along with other weapons all of which were seized by the sheriffs department.

The suspect is identified as: Joshua M. BOBO – 27 year old male

Joshua BOBO will be incarcerated at the Rankin County Jail after his release from the hospital on charges of domestic violence and attempted assault on a law enforcement officer.

Joshua BOBO does have a Rankin County arrest history on domestic violence and alcohol charges.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey thanks the brave men and women of the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department and those from the supporting agencies who put themselves in harms way today to keep the citizens of Rankin County safe and bring a peaceful end to the incident.

The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department thanks the Reservoir Police Department, Flowood Police Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, The Federal Bureau of Investigations, Reservoir Fire Department, Rankin EOC, the Rankin/Madison District Attorneys Office and AMR for their assistance.

I really don't find it humorous that two LEOs wrecked with each other. The roads were wet and slick and I'm sure their vehicles are not 4WD.

Would you find it funny if two members of your family collided while rushing to the hospital because of a family member's emergency?

The whole story is unfortunate; but, humor is where we find it and we force it into our lives to keep us sane. Seems to be overkill that the boy was charged with 'attempted assault on a law enforcement officer'. A stretch.

he said he would kill any officer who entered the house. no stretch there.

Shadowfax said...

IF it occured, that would be a threat, not an attempt. He needs treatment, not fabricated charges.

Anonymous said...

read the statute. threatening to kill someone is illegal.

Kingfish said...

Didn't even make the newspaper.

Cooter said...

Read the case law. The threat must be imminent, not contingent upon a future act. "If you enter, I will kill you" is contingent.

The real question is can Roscoe dock Enos' pay for the damage to both patrol cars, even though the wreck was probably Roscoe's fault?

And did they find the still that was in uncle jesse's barn out back?

How did the FBI get jurisdiction?

Shadowfax said...

On another thread, same subject, someone reported that his sister in law was in a sub and couldn't get out. I believe (but will defer to Cooter) when a sub is in the reservoir, the FBI is automatically called in.

whether Burwell is aware of this illicit use of his water remains to be seen.

Shadowfax said...

UPDATE: Sorry, it was a cousin, not a sister in law. This could ramp up the charges.

Thankful for a peaceful ending.
Always could be worse.

Please keep this kid away from guns and get him some help.

Is this jim bobo who is the attorney for the city of pearl?

Anonymous said...

Bobo and Bozo both live in Stankin Rankin, how fitting. And to think this kind of stuff happens in a DRY county...

Shadowfax said...

Obviously 9:14 has no clue that the sub makes a daily run from Jacktown to The Gold Coast and swings back through the Pelahatchie Bay area (which includes Palisades)on its way up to Leake.

Jim is a excellent man. I am very sorry to hear this and I am glad that nothing worse than an auto accident took place.

Shadowfax, this is a subsequent domestic violence charge on what has become a pattern of domestic violence, at the young age of 27. This is an absolutely terrifying situation. I do not think it is a stretch to anticipate that this individual could easily kill in the throws of his psychosis. This individual does not operate in the same reality as the rest of us. It may be a benifit to detain him in the state mental hospital for extensive treatment and study so we can learn more about why this type of crisis happens to young people from affluent backgrounds. It seems to be a trend; or worse, an epidemic.

Shadowfax said...

1:28 a.m: I don't disagree with you at all. I simply question the charge, and, as confirmed by Cooter, it is a bogus charge, and in my opinion, is fabricated to extend jail time.

I'm all for this young man having the help he needs. It's an all around tragic situation that could happen at any minute in any of our families. Threatening someone in the heat of confusion is NOT 'attempted assault on an officer'. That was my point when I mentioned 'a stretch'.

The young man needs help to cope with and escape his demons, just as we all might on occasion. I'm not at all comfortable knowing that throwing him in jail, standing him up before a judge and forcing medication upon him will be the answer. But, our answer to mental health issues in this state, this country, are abysmally inadequate. Our answer swabs iodine on fingernails and keeps bureaucrats employed.

Has NOTHING to do with 'affuent backgrounds'. You have NOTHING to back that up.

This young man must be in so much pain to have done this.I feel for him and his parents and hope he can get some good help and live productive life.
I do find it amusing that that many law enforcement officers and agencies were needed. I'm sorry, but our tax dollars and paying these idiots and thugs in uniform for absolutely nothing, other than acting like Rambo.

I believe that if u know that your child has had mental problems and on drugs that you should not have guns in your home ...

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
