It seems a bit of controversy has finally entered the House #59 race. A Brent Powell supporter, Rodney Keith (who we will call "Powelltool from now on, my apologies to Tool Academy), took it upon himself to challenge the residency of Republican candidate Bradley Lum.
Powelltool said Mr. Lum voted in the 2011 Republican primary in Hinds County and worked as a poll worker as well. Needless to say, Powelltool told the Clarion-Ledger he is retaining an attorney and filing a complaint against young Lum as he seeks to disqualify him from representing the district.*
The documents posted below state Mr. Lum applied for an absentee ballot in Hinds County on August 18, 2011. It states "I, Bradley Lum, duly qualified and registered in the Raymond 2 Precinct of the County of Hinds....". He voted in the August 23rd election with his absentee ballot. He stated he lived at 1611 Williamswood Drive in Raymond as his home address. Its the same address he used in 2003 when he registered to vote in Hinds County and is where his father also lives. The county paid him to be a poll worker at Precinct 68 on for the August 2, 2011 Republican Primary.
Mr. Lum said he was transferring his voter registration to Rankin County when he answered a request at law school for students to work the polls in the 2011 Republican primary for Hinds County.**
Mr. Lum told this correspondent: "We lived in Rankin County for over two years." He said he moved to Rankin County on January 1, 2011 when he got married. His wife bought the house in August 2010. He said he did not move his registration at that time. Mr. Lum said he answered a posting at Mississippi College School of Law requesting poll workers for the Republican primary in 2011. He said he contacted Hinds County GOP Chairman Pete Perry.
Mr. Lum said "I told him I was about to switch my vote to Rankin County since I had moved there but he said I could not work the polls if I did that. He said because I was a student, I could stay registered in Hinds County. I knew he needed poll workers because it was at the deadline and I was wanting to help the Republicans in heavily Democratic areas." He said he submitted his qualifying documents for the election to replace Kevin McGee to the Secretary of State but did not discuss his qualifications with the Rankin County Republican Party or Rankin County Election Commission.
Mr. Perry told JJ "We recruited poll workers from local colleges. We told those who took the training class for poll workers up-front they had to be registered voters of Hinds County. We have a question many times with students as to whether they could register in Hinds County. I tell them they can register either as a student in Hinds County or back in their home county. Many of them became registered voters in Hinds so they can work the polls. Mississippi law allows them to move their registration back and forth if they are a student.
The difference is Mr. Lum was already registered in Hinds County. He told me he was living in Rankin County and asked if he could be an eligible poll worker. I told him he was registered in Hinds and in school so he could in fact work the polls. I didn't know he was going to be a candidate in a year and a half. My answer applied to his working as a poll worker at the time."
Clarion-Ledger article.
*Rankin County voter registration for all four candidates:
Brent Powell: July 14, 1987
Bradley Lum: October 5, 2011
Scot Allen: February 18, 2010
Bennie Hubbard, Jr.: March 11, 2011
**Emails (Alternated highlighting in bold so as to make easier to read):
Mr. Lum said he did not respond to this last email and registered in Rankin County.

Bradley,
Are you able to work the election on the 23rd for the runoff? Basically the same thing as a couple of weeks ago, except that there will be only one race (Treasurer) so the turnout will be extremely light.
Can let you go back to the same precinct, or possibly move you to another precinct in NE Jackson if that would be more convenient for you.
Let me know if you are available to work, or if you have questions or problems.
Thanks,
Pete Perry

Bradley,
We need to confirm which precinct you will be managing in the election on August 2nd. Unless you have another preference, I will put you at Wilkins Elementary School, Precinct 68. As manager, you will pick up the materials on Monday – and tell them you are at precinct 68.
This is a fairly large precinct total voters – but never votes heavy. You will probably have slightly more than 100 Republican votes.
It is located South of Raymond Road, approximately ½ mile west of Ellis Avenue. (Ellis Exit off 220, west on Raymond Road, South on West Highland Drive.)
I can put a couple of workers there with you that have been trained, unless you have a couple of workers to assist.
Please confirm and feel free to ask questions if need be.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

I think it's worth noting a guest post made on this very website by Mr. Lum in February 2011, in which he states "I have since gotten married and moved to the suburbs. We attempted to buy in Jackson but it made more sense for a number of reasons to go in this direction."
http://kingfish1935.blogspot.com/2011/02/response-to-kamikazes-letter.html
Getting married to a person who owns a home in HD-59 doesn't automatically make you a resident of HD-59. You have to take some action to establish your legal residency, like changing your voter registration.
The Mississippi Constitution requires that any candidate be a resident of the district for two years preceding the election. Unless Mr. Lum established his residency in HD-59 on or before January 7, 2011, he should not be eligible to be a candidate.
One other minor thing: Benny Jr, whose registration you list as March 2011, is the son of the candidate, not the candidate himself. Benny Sr. has been registered for some years and ran for alderman in 2009.
Well maybe his future will be in the practice of Law
Lum, Dumb & Dumber ?
Is Ryan Brown, Chairman of the Rankin County Democratic Executive Committee, who made a promise to give Rankin County Democrats a fresh face and a strong voice in what is considered as a Republican stronghold really Bradley Lum’s campaign manager? Is Bradley Lum the fresh face and strong voice promised by the Rankin County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman? Initially I looked past the RINO Reno/Whitwell connection with Lum, but this is really beginning to smell like a ploy to have the Rankin County District 59 House Representative owing his allegiance to the Democratic party and Hinds County.
Lum is DONE! Regardless of the residency, voter registration is in what/which county controversy, he is now discredited as nothing more than an opportunist. I suggest he apply to be an associate attorney at the Luckett Law Firm in Clarksdale, they can then spend their days determining statutes involved around residency requirements to run for public office in Mississippi.
But he's a third generation Rankin County resident!!
I like Benny Hubbard's background. I'm voting for him.
He's a third generation Rankin Countian, who went to Hillcrest in SW Hinds County. Must have been a long daily commute!
Lum does not have a chance. There will not be a run-off. The down ticket candidates will cancel out each others votes. My vote is for Powell!
2:50pm - Bradley definitely isn't a democrat. Not at all.
Didn't Cowby Phil endorse Powell. Billy Powell is the reason we have Bryant as Governor! anybody but Phil Bryant!
Powell is probably done. Just my estimation.
Lum the loser will not get 25% !
Said it before and I will say it again, we will miss McGee!
Ditto to 11:19 PM
@ 2:50
Wouldn't you rather have a Democrat than a guy who stabs his neighbors in the back?
A political newcomer with a voter registration controversy versus the weak and deadbeat son of a powerful figure known as the Godfather?
I thought this Lum vs. Powell, not David Landrum vs. Fredo Corleone.
