Hinds Supes hire disbarred lawyer as lobbyist. (Video)

Update: The video has been added to this post. Just watch it. You won't believe what you see.

Yup. The Hinds County Board of Supervisors voted to hire Firnist Alexander as a lobbyist. The website for the Mississippi Bar reports Mr. Alexander is disbarred.

The board voted to hire him for a retainer of $10,000 and an hourly rate for additional work. The rate was not stated or discussed. Mr. Alexander asked for expenses to "wine and dine" legislators. Mr. Alexander represented the following clients:

Jubilee Mortgage Company (2012, 2011, 2010, 2009)
Mississippi Valley State Alumni Association (2012, 2011, 2010)

Mr. Alexander was the President and Director of Jubilee Mortgage. In other words, Mr. Alexander was representing himself and listed himself as a client. You just can't make this up. The Board voted 4-1 to hire Mr. Alexander.  You can guess who voted for and who voted against the hire.

Notably, Alexander represented the Scott sisters at trial. Here is some additional information regarding his practice, taken from a 1997 supreme court opinion:

"Mr. Alexander's prior disciplinary sanctions, from 1980 to 1995, include five Informal Admonitions, a Private Reprimand and three Public Reprimands.   In addition, there are subsequent instances of disciplinary action taken against Mr. Alexander which the Complaint Tribunal in the case sub judice did not have for consideration.   The Bar filed a Motion to Supplement the Record so that this Court would have these subsequent sanctions for consideration when determining the appropriate disciplinary action in this case, which motion we passed for consideration upon the merits.   The subsequent sanctions imposed upon Mr. Alexander are set out below.

¶ 11. On November 17, 1995, the Complaint Tribunal for the Mississippi Bar sanctioned Mr. Alexander with a Public Reprimand and a thirty-day suspension for conduct involving neglect, failure to communicate with clients, unreasonable fees, failure to protect clients' interests upon termination of representation, and failure to respond to a lawful demand for information from the disciplinary authority.   On April 11, 1996, we dismissed Mr. Alexander's appeal from that judgment.  Attorney II v. The Mississippi Bar, No. 95-TS01278 (Miss. April 11, 1996).

¶ 12. On February 15, 1996, we imposed a reciprocal sanction against Mr. Alexander for conduct for which he was disciplined by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi.   The Mississippi Bar v. Alexander, 669 So.2d 40 (Miss.1996).   During the previous three years, Mr. Alexander had been sanctioned by the Southern District in at least twenty separate cases and ordered to pay monetary sanctions to the court or to the parties involved by at least five federal judges.  Alexander, 669 So.2d at 40.   The various sanctions imposed upon Mr. Alexander were for conduct which included:  failure to produce or cooperate in discovery;  failure to appear;  failure to prepare for pretrial conferences;  failure to respond to motions;  and failure to submit settlement memos.  Id. at 41.   Furthermore, Mr. Alexander had disobeyed court orders to pay monetary sanctions in the total amount of $6,651.  Id. For his misconduct, the Southern District suspended Mr. Alexander from the practice of law before that court for two years with the exception of his pending cases, should his clients choose to have him continue.  Id. Pursuant to Rule 13 of the Rules of Discipline for the Mississippi State Bar, we imposed a reciprocal sanction of an unconditional six-month suspension from practice before state courts.  Id. at 42.

¶ 13. The Bar argues that Mr. Alexander's unprofessional and unethical conduct in the instant case, when considered together with his extensive record of prior disciplinary sanctions and his subsequent sanctions for similar conduct, demands more than yet another Public Reprimand, and thus Mr. Alexander should either be disbarred or be suspended for a period of time functionally equivalent to disbarment.   Mr. Alexander argues that his subsequent sanctions should not be considered by the Court in this case, and that a Public Reprimand was sufficient discipline under the record before the Complaint Tribunal."

Seems like a solid choice by Hinds County.

I think this is an excellent move. There will probably be fewer worries about conflicts of interest since he is no longer a practicing attorney.

WTH is a kangaroo deterrent?

Maybe he and Louis Armstrong can carpool to the Capitol. I can see them now, both in the back of a pink, stretch limo, purple suits, white hats, cigars, girls in boas and magnetic door signs reading "Forward Together". Does the NAPA store have hanging styrofoam dice?

Really???? If all else fails, do it twice as bad as the first time....no one seems to care anyway. Jackson, the city of Detroit!!!!

was it a 4-0 vote. or 3-1? Or 4-1?

These elected officials in Jax/Hinds are...TRASH! Dignity is not a word they understand. Anyone wanting to be elected to public office in Hinds county is a fool.

Algonquin J. Calhoun lives!

Now is the time to run against these supervisors in order to reason with the electorate.

Just when you think you have seen it all.. now comes this. We should know by now that honesty and integrity are two words that have no meaning to the Hinds County BOS. I have said it before and I will say it again that the Hinds County BOS are an absolute disgrace to every hard working, tax paying citizen in the county. It seems that the more dishonest and unworthy a person is the more qualified they are for a job in the eyes of the BOS. Thanks Kingfish for always giving us the low down on these criminals in office.

It is nice to see the Hinds County Supervisors like to hire such a diverse workforce. It shows a deep commitment to their Affirmative Action goals in hiring protected groups. unfortunately, one of their protected groups are the incompetent.

Ya Think they'll have the Shuriff provid'em a "Escort".

One more sorry mofo on the tit.

You gotta read the CL story for the Stokes quotes. "His record speaks for itself." Yep....sure does.

Anonymous said...

No doubt the Knave wrote his story after reading yours.

Anonymous said...

Stokes is THE most racist person in the state. If he honestly thinks the person with the highest qualifications is a dis-barred attorney only because he's black...s

None of this matters since we now have Whole Foods to save Jackson and HindsCo.

Wine and dine em does not sound like Hinds county is going to get much except some expensive bills for entertainment. If the board encounters problems paying the bill, maybe Mr. Stokes can cajole the churches who supposedly are or were helping pay his bill to the Louisiana tour bus company to ante up for this as well. Inquiring minds wonder if that debacle has been resolved or not. Buffoonery at its best to start off the new year.

Kingfish said...

Just watch the video. Gets worse. No one asked him about other clients, experience, or other criteria you would use for due diligence.

Anonymous said...

Compensation is discussed on results received. It is against the law to compensate a lobbyist on that basis.

Kingfish said...

Watch the video. He tells them he is not an attorney, no one asks why.

Avery Wiseman said...

It's Theatre of the Absurd.  I had to stop watching it.  If these clowns didn't represent the county of the state capital, it could be funny.  And if Hinds County was flush with cash, hires like this could be ignored.  The cancer of incompetent leadership that is eating Jackson is also eating Hinds County.

Regarding the video....somebody sure has to do a lot of stapling next to the camera. Whats with all the stapling?

Kingfish said...

My camera is right in front of the chancery clerks.

Pretty sure when large Kenny heard the word "disbarred" he assumed they were speaking of dis bar down on Hwy. 80 as opposed to dat bar on South Gallatin.

Hinds County ... A World of Difference!

10:46 - now that was funny! Along the same lines as him not knowing that you could get the equivalent of a HS Diploma at the Education Center, which is located in Hinds County.

Where else can readers find reference to Algonquin J. Calhoun and Kingfish in the same thread? This is good stuff. Comedy, sadness, humor, corruption, a continuing obituary thread....it's all right here. Unbelievable.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
