The Mississippi Democratic Trust issued this press release:
Mississippi faces opportunity to improve healthcare model
July 5, 2012
Jackson, MS- Last year in Mississippi, uncompensated care, those costs incurred in treating uninsured patients, totaled $525.5 million. Of that amount, $315 million was not covered by any federal reimbursement program and was, instead, passed on to Mississippi taxpayers.
House Democratic Caucus Leader Bobby Moak (D – Bogue Chitto) said, “Mississippi hospitals and taxpayers make up for uncompensated care through higher taxes and higher costs for healthcare.”
Under the Affordable Care Act, deemed constitutional by the United States Supreme Court last week, many states will take advantage of Medicaid options that drastically reduce the amount lost each year to uncompensated care. According to estimates provided by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 330,000 Mississippians will be newly eligible for Medicaid under the plan.
“If those thousands of Mississippians who are currently using our emergency rooms for ‘doctors visits’ are able to access health insurance, it will drive down the amount Mississippi spends on uncompensated care,” said Moak.
Under the plan, Mississippi would receive $1.6137 billion per year for three years from the federal government to cover the cost of new healthcare recipients.
Brandon Jones, Executive Director of the Mississippi Democratic Trust, said, “This is a total of $4.8411 billion dollars in new healthcare funding that will not require tax increases at the local level or result in higher hospital bills for insured Mississippians.”
In the fourth year of the program, Mississippi would receive $6.29343 billion and would only be required to provide $161.37 million match.
Moak said, “Mississippi would pay no matching costs for three years and the matching costs in the fourth year would only represent a fraction of what we already pay annually for uncompensated care.”
Jones added, “Refusing healthcare funding under these circumstances would be a classic example of cutting off our nose to spite our face.”
###
PRESS NOTES:
1. To learn more about the Kaiser Family Foundation and to read the Foundation’s reports on the impact of the ACA on state Medicaid programs, visit www.kff.org.
2. Using the latest U. S. data, a Mississippi family of four with an income of $30,656.50 would be eligible for the program. Each additional person in the household would add $3,960 to that base amount.
3. Each year, Mississippi spends approximately $4,890 in healthcare costs per Medicaid recipient.

Trollfest '09
Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.
Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).
Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.
Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".
In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.
In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.
Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.
Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!
This is definitely a Beaver production.

I'll have to agree with Bobby Moak on this one. The people of Mississippi need this.
Bill,
Who pays for the increase?
"Of that amount, $315 million was not covered by any federal reimbursement program and was, instead, passed on to Mississippi taxpayers."
So, instead, for three years we should run up a tab and pass it on to ALL US taxpayers (not just Mississippi taxpayers) so they can pay back to the Chinese (or whomever) the amount we need to borrow to pay this back.
The Federal portion of this is to be funded by a tax on investment earnings and certain other income. The shady part of it is the the big Federal money is only guaranteed for the first few years. So, if the Federal funding gets cut, we'll be stuck with thousands more on the Medicaid rolls and either have to cut them off or go broke trying to pick up whatever Uncle decides to hold back. In addition, if and when Obamacare gets repealed you'd still have the same situation to deal with. It's a bad deal we can't afford. There has to be a better way and this one surely isn't it!!
It's so sad they can't see the long term economic implications of their short-sight policies. It's a bad law on so many levels, but states refusing to expand their Medicaid programs is the one sure way to destroy the implementation of this thing. Without Medicaid, the creation of exchanges cannot readily occur.
When people like Bill tell me the state should increase the availability of any type entitlement I also want him to tell me where the money comes from. The working people can only pay so much and feel it is worth still working and not getting in the wagon instead of pulling it.
I just want to know where the $160 million is going to come from when we never can seem to properly fund Medicaid every year as it is.
No, the government just doesn't "Give out" money.
A new federal program to save money from another program?
Bullshit
@Anon 2:39 Well the money would come from those of us who can afford to pay. State income taxes are too low.
I don't know Bill well enough to tell whether he's being sarcastic or borrowing a line from O'Bama. Taxes are not too low, spending is too high!!!
So the dems and black caucaus want more free stuff for everybody. Hell no. Medicaid is for those elderly and children who are unable to work and are poor and for disabled. Sitting on the porch getting a fat ass cause you lazy and getting sugar diabetes, bp and heart problems don't qualify as disabled. Get off your ass, get a job, lose weight and exercise. Your other option is to live a sick life and die a slow painful death. Either way, we ain't payin for your ass to do nothin.
Amen 6:03.
Remember that a penny saved is a government mistake
http://djournal.com/view/full_story/19204142/article-Medicaid%E2%80%99s-impact-may-drive-debate-on-expansion?instance=home_news_right
What 6:03 said!!!!
As a private doctor, I would go broke seeing only medicaid. A level 3 established patient visit with an average of 2-3 problems that need to be investigated that takes about 15 mins of time pays around 20 dollars. Do the math. If I am open 8 hours and see 4 medicaid patients an hour, I will make 640 dollars a day. I wouldn't be able to afford the rent, utilities, and staff, yet alone pay myself any salary. And that is if I get paid at all. So the next time you bitch about why so few doctors see medicaid, think about the simple economics of it.
Doctor, if the liberals get their way you won't have to worry about rent, utilities or staff, and you'll be getting a salary from the government. French doctors make a cool $50,000 a year and their system is just peachy, right? What a mess this is going to be...
Of course they want more Medicaid. Nothing pisses me off more than some huge fat ass, I mean FAT ASS, (almost always AA) driving around Sam's or the grocery store in one of the electric carts. I mean for God's sake WALK around. These are the Obamacare bunnies that will break the bank.
I have NEVER seen so many FAT people in my life. Gross.
I still am appalled at the entitlement of government to think that obamacare is good for the PEOPLE but not good enough for upper level government employees (senators, congressmen, elected/appointed judicial employees, etc). That is insane, we elect these ass holes to work for us not screw us. Power to the individuals.
let me say first , i am a conservative who has a huge belief in the constitution. i hate obama, his cronies and everything they do. doctors go to school many years, pay expensive overhead cost for their practices and work hard. drug companies have done expensive research. insurance companies pay expensive claims daily. hospitals continue to provide facilities and equipment for testing and surgeries. however they all make way too damn much money and as a result the publics frustration with the system has been used to promote obamacare-even though the people don't want it. obamacare is not the answer. greed is not either..
Someone once asked Andrew Carnegie, who was the richest man in the world at the time, to define how much money was enough. His reply? I don't know - I don't have enough yet.
10:40, it's not your place or anyone else's to decide who's making "way too damn much money" in health care or road construction or playing baseball or selling used cars. Yes, the system needs an overhaul, but salary control is a huge mistake. Where do you stop? Doctors, nurses, first line delivery people? Equipment manufacturers? I'm sure GE's executive team takes home more than a country doctor, or maybe even a heart surgeon. Hospital construction companies? Pharmaceutical companies? Greed didn't get us here and government interference designed to keep profits down won't solve it.
Hear, hear. I like ol' Bill. As an AA myself (who does not "ride around the Sam's parking lot on my fat a**"), I appreciate that he and some others can say something smart and sensibly conservative without insulting anyone or making rash geralizations about a whole race. Thanks.
Excuse me, forgot to clarify: the Bill @ 1:29, that is. Smart, civil individual.
Sorry, this is Anon 1:47. That is *generalizations. Would hate to reflect poorly on my people in this forum.
Well, even after the "free money" runs out, Washington is offering to match 90cents on the dollar. I believe the governor said that it would increase the medicaid roles from 25% to 30% of the population. That's a lot of healthcare providers and construction workers paying income and sales tax.
I didn't like Obamacare, and would have preferred flat out tax credits for individuals, but the gop would be nuts (and they probably are) to not find a way to come up with the money for this.
Froom a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study in 2009:
"Among 19 countries included in a
recent study of amenable
mortality, the United States had
the highest rate of deaths from
conditions that could have been
prevented or treated successfully."
That means that France, (and 17 other countries) had lower mortality rates from preventable or treatable causes. Translation: Helath care is better in many other places, France included, than it is in the United States.
1861 .
Wasn't it Bill Clinton who promised a hundred thousand new policemen on the streets? Hell, who doesn't want more cops? He was prepared to fund their pay for one year. Then what?
Wasn't it Obama who tried to twist the states' arms into agreeing to a one or two year extension and increase in Unemployment Insurance and Haley and a few others thought, "What the hell? Who pays for it after that? It's required to be permanent."
It's becoming more and more simple to bump costs down to the states. People with these kinds of minds actually believe if they require states to pick up costs, eventually things will level out, everybody will be a lighter shade of brown, every income will be marginal, every skill will be mediocre and all citizens will be 'melted down'.
America will become 50 dry turnips and all of our hands will be extended upward to D.C. where there will only be meager handouts. How soon will we become a national remake of 'Night of The Living Dead'?
