Democrats slam Governor over education

The Democratic Trust made the following statement yesterday:

Jackson, MS- Today, Brandon Jones, Executive Director of the Mississippi Democratic Trust, joined Democratic members of the House and Senate to highlight the impact of cuts to K-12 education under the 2013 Republican budget. The Republican budget plan, introduced today by Governor Phil Bryant, calls on school districts to contribute $72.9 million of their reserve funds to fill out the state education budget.

Jones said, “The Republican plan for education is simple: punish those school districts that have been prudent with their resources.” Jones added, “During the campaign, Governor Bryant claimed to support full funding for public schools. It is disappointing that his first budget as governor not only fails to provide full funding for our schools but comes in $73 million shy of level funding.”

Rep. Kelvin Buck (D-Holy Springs) said, “This budget represents a major step backward for Mississippi children. With revenue up $85 million over estimate, it’s irresponsible to make deep cuts to education and ask our local schools to make up the difference.”

###

The Mississippi Democratic Trust seeks to help elect Democratic candidates who will provide sensible and responsible leadership for Mississippi. The Trust supports effective policies to address legitimate economic, education, healthcare, and public safety issues in our State.

The statement refers to the Governor's budget proposal released yesterday. The Clarion-Ledger reported:

"Bryant called on school districts to pull a combined $72 million from their reserves to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, effectively cutting the K-12 budget by 3.7 percent." Article

KF, I have a question. Apologies if it is a dumb one. I just dont understand something so maybe you can help.

When working with budgets, you have several entries that have a dollar figure next to them. For example, any business would have overhead costs broken down by category. Normally the categories would be listed down such as utility bills, insurance, office supplies, phones, rent, salaries, taxes, etc.

If an entity is requesting funds, such as the Education group, why doesn't anyone see that detailed budget? How come we don't see that X% of their budget goes to xyz cost. The idea of screaming--this is for the kids--seems very silly to me because 100% of the money budgeted to education can't possibly do this. Education is a business, they want public funding, let's see that budget.

What's the percentage that is set aside for upper employees? What's the percentage that is set aside for teachers? What's the percentage set aside for stuff that we didn't even know they were doing? To me, its not about rhetoric (sp?), its a business wanting more funds. My first question will always be--lets see where the millions are going now before we go any further. Maybe there is a solution here that you just don't want to take.

Is that just an assinine way of looking at it?

There is a legislative budget request made by each agency that is VERY detailed. Also not cheap. I have medicaid's and it was $50 just for copying charges for one department. Something that should be online.

Thanks, I just didn't know. I agree, it should be available to the public but the public should not be penalized for seeing it.

I wonder why these budget requests aren't part of Ms Policy something (I can't remember their name) website? Some time last year I believe, they had introduced a website that showed all of this information from the government agencies, etc. I remember they were on radio commercials talking about it. Maybe I'm just too simple about this, but it seems if there is a legislative budget request for public funds, that request should be available on that website. I appreciate that it costs money for paper copies of something (paper, toner, etc), but it should be a choice: scanned document available to the public without penalty/cost or printed paper copy with reasonable copy-costs (5 cents a page or something like that).

Electronic copies ensure there is no cost to the public (paying for it) and no cost to the agency (for copy supplies). So much is done electronically now and at such a lower cost, seems wasteful to not utilize it.

The Democratic "Trust"??? Wasn't this foundation created just so contributors could donate to an entity they can "trust" unlike, say, the Mississippi Democratic "Party"? Which means that libs who don't trust the Democratic Party with their own money are more than happy to insist that taxpayers should dump more of their money into public education. Screw 'em.

10:41; you seemed set on circular reasoning but somehow fell short.

MS Democratic Trust - nothing but Matt Eichelberger (Cottenchicken) and his running buddy, Brandon Jones - recently relieved of his post as a Dem legislator from Jackson County. Brandon created this so that he could try to remain relevant. (He was relavant earlier because he was the vote that put Billy McCoy into his second term as Speaker!)

The MS Democratic Trust is just as much a paper tiger as is the MS Democratic Party. Only difference is the players that think someone cares about what they think.

Despite having contributed to Matt's blog from time to time and conversing via Facebook with former Rep. Jones, I have never met the men who are behind this entity so I'm not really qualified to talk about them. Like many of you, I don't think they'll be able to pull the Democrat Party out of the ditch, but I give them credit for believing in something enough to give it a try. Anyone worth his salt has thought that at some point in his life he can make a difference, and Lord knows the time is certainly ripe for someone in the Democrat Party in Mississippi to try and make a difference. They were able to raise enough money to get them going, which probably got under the skin of Rickey Cole and the state party, and I applaud them for making the commitment even if I don't agree with their cause. Isn't that what JH is for?

Maybe Fill Bryant can plan a 5k for education since that is how he is going to solve the obesity problem. Or he could ask the same old bureaucrats that have been around for years to find a solution like he is doing with teen pregnancy.

I saw Steve Holland on the news last night pumping away on a Schwinn Airdyne. He claimed he'd lost something like a hundred and twenty pounds. A face lift is in order to complete the job. He's the new poster-boy for Bryant's 'Git Fit' campaign. No matter what he manages to lose or how buff he gets (snort), he's still Steve Holland.

"Fill Bryant"....love that!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
